IRON MAIDEN Drummer: 'Our Fans Are Truly Loyal And We Never Want To Let Them Down' - Aug. 8, 2012
Jim Beal Jr. of the San Antonio Express-News spoke to drummer Nicko McBrain of British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN ahead of the band's August 15 concert at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On IRON MAIDEN's enduring popularity:

McBrain: "A couple of things [have contributed to IRON MAIDEN's longevity]. The obvious one is the strength of the material. If we didn't have good songs we wouldn't still be here. And there's our passion for the music. Each of us loves the playing and the music. We love to play live. We make great records, but we also have a great love of playing live."

On whether the IRON MAIDEN bandmembers have a competitive nature:

McBrain: "Without a doubt. But we don't physically verbalize that to each other. Our competition is in-house. When we go in to make a record, we don't talk about the last record and what we're going to do the same or what we're going to do differently.

"Our favorite album is the one we're working on now. We know there are great bands out there, but we don't worry about competing with them. We're competing with ourselves."

On reprising, with updated production, the 1988 "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son Tour" on the current "Maiden England World Tour":

McBrain: "Last year we toured with the album 'The Final Frontier'. We didn't want to do that again. We've done a couple of history tours in the past, playing the greatest hits. This year we decided to back to the year 1988 and revisit 'Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son'. We sat down and pieced the tracks together for a set then got down to rehearsing and working out the stage production."

On IRON MAIDEN's strong ties with the fans:

McBrain: "Every band in the world will say their fans are the best, but IRON MAIDEN fans become part of the family. It's pretty hard to please all of the fans all of the time. We know some of them have a bit of a moan if a certain song is not in the set, but our fans are truly loyal and we never want to let them down."

On having three lead guitarists in IRON MAIDEN:

McBrain: "Steve [Harris, bass] and I lock in to what we do. Having three guitar players gives us fuller sound and they're all fantastic players. Sometimes I think they're almost too polite when it comes to splitting up the solos. We have a great time. After all these years, there are no egos in this band."

Hey Nicko, your fans are more like sheep who don't have the balls to admit that your band has been extremely mediocre for the last 20 years. The last 3 albums blows the most. Iron Maiden will never again have the brilliance that they had in the beginning with the first 2 albums. Iron Maiden is nothing but a money machine now so keep raking in the money because the sheep will keep throwing it at you!!!

you're just a sad individual who doesn't know how to be thankful for the good things in life. there isn't a whole hell of a lot of things in the world that are like Iron Maiden or represent the ideals of this band. Integrity. Honesty. Individualism. Strength. Brotherhood. All some of the words that come to mind when I think of Maiden aside from all of them being very talented, involved and interesting people themselves.

Agree with the most, except I don't find their albums mediocre and it's a fantastic live band.

Listen here, you giant fucking douchebag. Just because you don't like their current sound doesn't mean it's bad, or soldout. they have 10 min. epics about space, and kings... that's NOT mainstream! You know the kids today and there prog rock epics about religious warfare? It's what all the pop stars are singing about! And by the way, there first 2 albums were merely a hint of what was to come. And Di'Anno's limitations were a big reason for that! And to choose your username, and argue this point constantly is incredibly sad... LET IT GO!

Nicko and Harris are great with the fans, but Bruce, Gears and Adrian won't even stop for an autograph or a quick picture.

I know the fanboys will hate me saying this, but them and Metallica are the best bands in the world. They have so many good songs between the two bands, that I could listen to them forever.

I think Dance of Death and The Final Frontier are amazing albums that don't get enough credit. It's funny because everyone loves Brave New World and A Matter of Life and Death, but I really don't care for those two. That's the great thing about Iron Maiden, so much to choose from. We can all like something. Seriously though, go listen to Paschendale off of DoD. That is in my top 5 favorite Iron Maiden songs.

Maiden fans know that the last few albums aren't AS good as the old ones, and we might not ever see another Piece of Mind, or Powerslave. But even their newer stuff beats the pants off of other popular metal bands (Metallica included).

I think bands like Kreator and Over Kill are still putting out better albums, but then they are still very hungry. They also sort of have to, to remain relevant. But all in all, Maiden is still very solid. I think they will remain solid, just like Priest. They do what they do very well.

Not really, but it's still very amusing.

Paul who? Nobody remembers this joke of a frontman.

Bruce Dickinson is one of the most respected frontmen of all time, in one of the most successful metal bands that ever existed. Paul Dianno is a long forgotten nobody.

And Nicko is a fantastic drummer, Maiden deserve all the popularity they have, and more.

"Fuc# off you fuc#ing midget!"-That was Nicko's answer to one fan girl.

He was completely drunk and rude to each fan in Split(Croatia) back in 2008.

He must be thankful to Steve Harris 'cause without him he would be a bum.

like Iron Maiden really bring out the jealous trolls, don't they? Just read some of the comments above by the unemployed basement dwellers who have to listen to their mommys yell at them every day.
