TESTAMENT's 'Dark Roots Of Earth' Cracks U.S. Top 15 - Aug. 8, 2012
"Dark Roots Of Earth", the new album from San Francisco Bay Area metal veterans TESTAMENT, sold more than 20,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No, 12 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD arrived in stores on July 31 via Nuclear Blast Records.

TESTAMENT's previous studio album, "The Formation of Damnation", opened with 11,400 units back in May 2008 to debut at position No. 59.

"Dark Roots Of Earth" was produced, mixed and mastered by acclaimed British producer Andy Sneap (ARCH ENEMY, NEVERMORE, ACCEPT, EXODUS). Special bonus tracks were recorded, mixed and mastered by Juan Urteaga (MACHINE HEAD, EXODUS, TED NUGENT, NIGHT RANGER) at his Trident Studios. The cover artwork for the effort (see below) was painted by Eliran Kantor, who has previously worked with ATHEIST, SIGH, ANACRUSIS and GWAR, among others.

"Dark Roots Of Earth" jewel case CD track listing:

The "Native Blood" video can be seen below.

TESTAMENT vocalist Chuck Billy collaborated with seasoned director Mike Sloat to put together a clip that is universal in message while bringing the spotlight to Billy's Native American heritage — The Pomo Indians.

The performance portion of the video was shot on the Billy Ranch in Hopland, California, where the flames were huge and the temperatures were high.

The "Native Blood" clip is about the growth a Native American youth throughout the years. When faced with hatred, racism, bullying, and harassment, he uses nature's sanctuary to recharge and meditate on the lessons he learned from his grandfather to handle these very tough situations in a way to honor and dignify himself and his people.

Billy previously stated about "Native Blood", "It's almost like a protest song, that the Native Americans have a voice that needs to be heard — that's the chorus of the song."

Hope to see them in Vancouver with Anthrax and Death Angel. The new Anthrax is good (especially considering their last few albums) but Testament should be headlining based on their overall reliability and the strength of the new album.

That is an AWESOME achievement.

I know that album sales aren't what they once were, but still...for a thrash band that's never been a commercial, household name, it's quite a feat.

Just shows that metal fans are loyal music fans who are willing to pay hard-earned money for quality music.

Grats to Testament. Proof again that people will still buy records if it's a good band you have good material, although I have to laugh at the irony that the only reason bands like this are charting so high is directly due to that horrible monster: illegal downloading. Not so horrible in this case, is it?

is great news. I'm glad I bought two copies - it's that fucking good. It just goes to show that hard work by Testament and delivering a fantastic record is rewarded. Hell, it sold more than Machine Head's and Anthrax and it should - it's a waaaay better record, a classic. Now, if we could support just as awesome bands like Saxon, who also delivered a killer record, that would be terrific to see. A Call to Arms only sold 700 copies the first week - that's fucking criminal!!! Thank God Europe and the rest of the world recognize their talent.

At one time you would never get anyone say anything negative about Testament, but since they are slowly gaining some modicum of popularity, the negative comments start to rise out of the sewers.

Anyhow, to echo the sentiments of the majority, this is a highly potent album nurtured and brought to life by an equally amazing group of talented people.

About time they got some credit for all the years they have worked so hard.

Its good to see that proven experienced iconic bands can keep strong ratings with new records and not just old glory

I dislike this Testament record its not much different than what they did ever since 2000 however Iconic Perfection of Powerslave cover is so brilliant that I shall buy this CD only because of that. Nothing else did turn me on, though just like someelse said here it has powerful tunes total Testament like. they way The Gathering did

I think a lot of things have helped sales of this album. First and foremost its a killer album. 2nd them touring with Anthrax over the last year has really helped there is a renewed interest in anthrax that has brought more people out to see the shows and in turn brought in some new fans to Testament. Testament bringing it live at those shows did a lot. Finally metal fans banding together and instead of downloading the album many more went out and bought the album.

After several spins, I honestly think this is hands-down the best modern-era Testament album. IMO, both The Gathering and Formation started out with two killer tunes out of the gate then quickly became one-dimensional and a bit boring....Basically they blew their load and then went kinda limp. The consistency is much better on Dark Roots and the songwriting has a lot more depth and hooks overall. Cold Embrace is classic clean guitar Testament. Well done, boys, well done.

In a country with a population in excess of 300 million some people think selling 20k copies in the first week is a triumph ? It's not, it's bollox. It's like .006% of the population, there are probably more people in the states fucking hamsters. The music industry is on it's last legs.

20K in one week IS a big accomplishment for a band like Testament these days. There just aren't as many people buying albums now. Whether it's a crappy economy or illegal downloading or whatever, the fact is CD sales are in the crapper for most metal bands. 20-25 years ago it would have done much better but rock & metal just doesn't dominate the U.S. music scene the way it did back then.

because for once they actually wrote great songs instead of trying to be the "heaviest, fastest , meanest ...whatever else bullshit" they were doing in their previous albums plus with Skolnick they actually sound like ...Testament again instead of generic modern thrash band number 26364938649.
Oh and "the gathering" is the most overrated album ever , at least in blabbermouth talkbacks, it's just..a gathering of great session musicians but not a great Testament album by any means . But it's THRAAAAAAAASH and BRUUUUUUTAAAAL so it's "great" for some people , i guess .
DROTE could be the best Testament album since their first 2 classics (that are on another level compared to anything they released afterwards) and i am extremely happy with its success .

Testament and Death Angel come to mind specifically, add in possibly Exodus and even the short lived reunion of Forbidden.

Awesome stuff.

This album is awesome, only wish it were longer. It truly is an amalgam of everything they've done. Hoglan is a beast and the couple of blast beat measures a lot were ragging on, they fit nicely. Musicianship is stellar. Still can't get over how great Chuck still sounds. Native Blood is a great song and homage to Chuck's heritage. It's a reminder of the suppression and decimation of the Native Americans and their land. A lot of light has been shed on slavery & abolition, but when you delve into what happened with the Native Americans, it's a tragic history.
Back to the album. Not only is 20k a big number for today, it's impressive that DROtE moved nearly 9k more units than F.o.D. Congrats again to the Testament guys & Andy Sneap. \m/ \m/
