Did JUDAS PRIEST's 'Screaming For Vengeance' Inspire GAP T-Shirt Design? - Aug. 7, 2012
A t-shirt currently being sold by Gap — the American clothing and accessories retailer based in San Francisco, California — bears more than a passing resemblance to the cover artwork of the classic JUDAS PRIEST album "Screaming For Vengeance".

Guitarist Bill Kelliher of Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON was the first to point out the similarities between the two designs, writing on his Instagram feed, "Leave it to the Gap to steal ideas for kid T-shirts. Seriously poor taste."

The Gap design and the "Screaming For Vengeance" t-shirt can be seen below in a side-by-side comparison.

JUDAS PRIEST's eighth studio album, "Screaming For Vengeance", will be released as a special 30th-anniversary edition on September 4 (one day earlier internationally) via Sony Music. The set will contain not only the remastered original album plus bonus tracks, but also a live DVD from the 1983 US Festival show, filmed in San Bernadino, California on May 29, 1983.

It's obvious the designer at Gap took it from there, probably thinking that no one still listens to that Judas Priest band. That's enough for a lawsuit, I am sure.

I mean they made a company called Hot Topic and exploited every fucking counter-culture to the mainsteam masses to basically consume. Gave every un-educated average joe out there the "look" of metal, hardcore, punk, goth, industrial, etc.etc.etc. and reaped their rewards. Which is a smart business move if you think about it; take every idiot out there with no sense of identity or brain and SHOVE this image of baggy Tripp pants/skinny jeans/skate shoes/stupid generic band shirt/ICP/Green Day/whatever it popular at the moment down their throats. Let a few bands make money. End of the day.

Again, this shouldn't come as a shock. Anything retro, underground, or what have you will be on a kids fucking lunchbox in a matter of 20 years.

Only differences I see is the wings pointed in different directions and the GAP one has a booster/rocket under the wing and the Priest one doesn't and the GAP one actually has an eye on it.

Still very similar.

broke this story. Once again, Bmouth fails to give credit where credit is due. You guys aren't going to be topped by any other metal news site in terms of hits, so just include what site you stole this from.

Hit the nail on the head. There's nothing you can buy or wear these days that's considered underground. When you see 13 year olds with the Misfits skull on their Chuck Taylors, you have to realize what this world has come to. So I don't fault the Gap at all on this one. I view Hot Topic customers the same way I view Abercrombie and Fitch customers.

Doubt they will sue....definitely inspired by, but not enough of a direct rip off to win.

Just took a look at the GAP site and this really doesn't look much like the Priest cover....yes, it is definitely inspired/ripped off from it, but theirs has engines attached to the bird and the two birds really don't look much alike! If the GAP was smart they would change the color of the sun or offer it with the sun in different colors, which they don't

If that's not a blatant rip-off of someone else's art work then what is?

How the hell did they think they could get away with that and nobody would notice?

The cover art for 'Screaming for Vengeance' is iconic, even if you don't like or listen to Judas Priest you've at least seen the cover art work and T-shirts with that art on it over the past 30 years.

Though I agreee its iconic for the metal community, without the JP logo (even with it) most people outside of the metal community would have no idea that it was from a JP record cover.

Screaming for Vengeance is only one of the most popular JP albums ever. And the band itself only has so much recognition with their music in commercials and all. So, no this just a coincidence.

...the original artist owns the design and licensed a version of it to Gap?

Not defending the store; just wondering if there's more to the story.

almost the same shit there. Everybody's copying everybody;nothing new under the sun.
Zeppelin copied from blues artists, modern metal copied from Sabbath, fashion recurs every few decades and so on and so on. Still, that's grounds for legal action on JP's part.

yeah, a kid will have a MISFITS skull on it, and have no idea who the Misifts were. its like asking a kid with a CBGBs shirt which country, bluegrass, and blues bands he likes.

Do they still make Doc Martins in China? (yes, there is a difference)

Back in 1993, I got a generic gray baseball jersey and had Lenny Dykstra's last name printed on the back, plus the number 4, with "Phillies" printed on the front in dark red block letters. It was the most ghetto looking knock-off shirt ever.

Until this one.

The Gap's lawyers probably know just how protective andlitigious Metallica is with their "brand". Metallica sued Revlon in the 80s when they were still "cool", revlon made the mistake of calling a fingernail polish "Metallica".

I agree with some of the comments in that the youngsters do not listen to the Priest like they should. It's the same damn thing and The Gap figured no one would know or care. We do and we do. Long live the Priest. It's time for vengeance.
