Former GUNS N' ROSES Drummer MATT SORUM Defends His 'November Rain' Performance - Aug. 7, 2012
Former GUNS N' ROSES drummer Matt Sorum has defended his performance in the classic GN'R track "November Rain", insisting that "drumming isn't all about fancy drum fills and splash cymbals."

Ex-DREAM THEATER and current ADRENALINE MOB drummer Mike Portnoy, who normally doesn't shy away from his two cents on any music-related discussion, took to his Twitter account on August 4 to pose the question: "'November Rain' is an all-time classic song... but why on Earth did Matt Sorum play the SAME EXACT fill every 4 bars? (23 times, to be exact!)"

Two days later, Sorum finally replied to Portnoy, writing on Twitter, "That fill was Axl's [Rose, GUNS N' ROSES singer] idea as a musical phrase that carried on through the trilogy, 'Don't Cry' and 'Estranged'. Those albums, 'Use Your Illusion' [parts] 1 and 2 have sold 20 million combined."

He added, "Remember, kids, drumming isn't all about fancy drum fills and splash cymbals. Ask Charlie Watts, Ringo [Starr] and Phil Rudd."

Portnoy then replied, "Agree 1000%!! Ringo is one of my greatest heroes!! No disrespect meant, bro... Just making an observation of that song. Peace! : )"

In a 2009 interview with Music Radar, Sorum spoke in more detail about his drumming approach on "November Rain", explaining, "The track I get the most amount of grief for, from drummers, is 'November Rain'. The reason I did that tom fill so many times is I felt it was a musical part. A lot of drummers were like, 'Why'd you play the same fill so much?!'

"Me and Axl were sitting in the studio late one night, having a couple of drinks and listening to Elton John, a song called 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me'.

"Axl goes, 'Do you hear that?' I'm like, 'Yeah, I love Nigel Olson, man'. He says, 'Do that on the song we're going to record tomorrow!' We'd rehearsed it but I didn't have all the fills and stuff, it was just a groove. In the end of 'November Rain', I get into that whole marching band trip."

As a fan of both Portnoy AND Sorum, i will side with Sorum on this.

Portnoy should know better. Playing drums is about playing with TASTE. Whether you're a "notesy" drummer, or "stripped right back" minimalist... it should be about the song, and Sorum achieved that.

Fans of Queen and Elton John don't seem to complain about those drummers, but because it's not a para-wanka-fiddle-diddle type fill, some heavy metal fans scream murder.

As for the comment about selling millions of records... yeah it's called arrogance, but it's also about putting people in their place. Portnoy really doesn't know when to shut up. And the fact Sorum (also a reputation of having a large mouth) has to shut Portnoy up... well that's when you know the world has gone fucking mad!

i normally stick up for him, but this is a pretty douchey move on Portnoy's part..

Obviously, November Rain isn't meant to show off Matt Sorum's drum fills. It's a power ballad. Axl was going for an Elton John / Nigel Olsen feel.. Makes more sense now.

He even had Elton sit in with GnR at the MTV awards when they played it...

I'm not a big fan of the song, but Matt Sorum's parts are fine... Mike would have most likely overplayed the shit out of it.

My only critique is Sorum's drum sound is kind of dry, whereas Olsen always used that open concert toms tone.. other than that ... he nailed it...

Matt shouldn't have bothered responding.

Exactly, by doing that he's giving it the importance that lacks of to begin with. That Portnoy dude should get a life, almost all things posted here related to him are dumber than the one before. Matt Sorum isn't my favourite person either but I do like his drumming, kind of soulless but the guy knows how to hit those skins.

Who cares? It's a bonafide classic song... the type that come around once a decade if we're lucky. Matt's drumming fit the song's MO to a T, which is something musicians are supposed to do: Serve the Song, not wank all over it.

Probably one of the crappiest ballads ever, right after The Unforgiven. There isn't anything classic about this song whatsoever. Most of us who loved AFD knew the band was going straight down the commercial shitter at this point.

agreed. Love GnR, but that may be my least favorite, they tread in the power ballad waters on this one. The guitar solo gets mentioned as an all time solo, I don't get that either(unless its the reference to the ending solo which I prefer)...I liked Axl's voice on many songs, but on this one, it doesn't work for me. To me, its like saying "every rose has a thorn" is an alltime classic.

How dare you soil the poetic imagery and haunting vocalization of such a timeless classic written by one of the most respected bandannas of his time by comparing his masterpiece to that cat-screeching, Sebastian Bach-worshipped William Bailey.

Ahhh, just yanking your chain. Both those songs suck massive ass.

This sums up what is wrong with portnoy and people like him... They only play to show off, and they can't understand when people don't.

Sorum doesn't make it an extravaganza of fills because it is simply not required! As the guy above said, it's about playing with taste, not showing off.

I fucking hate people who treat music like a sport! Play from the heart. Portnoy sits there like an olympic judge instead of just enjoying the bloody song

I actually like the fact that MP talks about music here. So he discusses the core theme of this whole website, and still gets shit. And I think he has a good point here.

I can say, so far, MP is the most impressive drummer I have seen playing live (maybe next to Jerry Gaskill), not Technique- wise but Charismatic- wise.

He is just such a great drummer.

With all respect, I have to disagree with you on this one. Sorum did NOT nail it on this track... I completely agree with your statement about playing to the song, it's not all about flashy stuff, etc... but playing the EXACT same fill 23 times isn't musical. It's monotonous and boring, and adds NOTHING to the song. He could have played simple fills throughout and mixed them up and achieved a better effect.

Listen to the song, what Matt Sorum did fits perfectly.

It's a ballad, you're not going to have much as far as the drums go in a song like that. Plus the song was originally written and demoed as a piano ballad.

I can't imagine anything different with the drums on 'November Rain' nothing else would right. There are so many other songs on the 'Use Your Illusion' albums where Matt lays down some great drum tracks, like 'You Could Be Mine'.

Portnoy is just a bored drummer with nothing better to do than analyse old records in his vinyl collection. I don't give a rat's ass about drum fills, even though I'm a musician I listen to the song and don't ruin it by analyzing the technical aspect. Drummers don't need to show off in a ballad, duh.

Sorum 1 - Portnoy 0

I remember when they were recording the 'Use Your Illusion' records, and Axl had mentioned that he wanted Nigel Olsson-like drumming on the song, which *fits the song*. Mike Portnoy may be able to play every paradiddle fill in the world, but -aside from technical prowess and the "Wow" factor- it gets old when it doesn't gel within the confines of the song.

Math metal has never been my thing. Less is more, sometimes.

November Rain is a monster when it comes to power ballads. Mr.Portnoy needs to keep his yapper shut when it comes to songs that will be played long after he's gone. I realize he's full of himself after the latest all time prog poll putting Dream Theater on top. This is a non issue and needs to be left alone.

I really liked Mike Portnoy before the whole DT drama and before I started going on Blabbermouth (lol).

It's really sad how fast he's gone downhill. He was a greatly respected drummer and seemed like a funny, decent enough guy. Now he quit his lifelong band, got kicked out of A7X, formed the POS that is Adrenaline Mob, and now just talks out of his ass about everything.

He kinda seems like the type that would patrol these comments, so if you see this Mike, it's not too late! Start being a little more humble and choosy about what you say in the press, either disband or fix AM, and focus on kicking ass on drums again. You still have a fan in me if you do that.

Yeah he plays complicated stuff but the actual sound is demo studio quality. I dunno if it's how he tunes the drums, mice, etc, but it never quite sounds big time.

Are you that much of a fuckin douche bag? I never got this shit, like what is it because it's easy to play then it's not good or something? Is that it? That must be the reason why all these perfectionist pussy musicians/fans get their panties in a bunch whenever someone can make something good outta something simple.

Ya know I wonder if Mike Portnoy sits outside and criticizes birds and crickets chirping for being unoriginal. Fuck you and fuck your overrated old band. Whats the matter, your carefully calculated time signature tempo shifted drum fills didn't skyrocket you to GNR fame or what?

That's just a classic song, and sounds great to me. That guy complaining is a loser.

heh, i never noticed... i guess he's talking about the CHICK CHICK-A-BOOM part. i guess you dont notice when it fits the song

meh, its not nearly as annoying as mastadon's drummers constant rolls:

'kick, snare, kick ROOOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL, kick, snare, ROLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL, kick snare ROLOLOLOLOLOLOL' ect

...because Axl asked him too. It's in the "November Rain-making of" VHS, they both talk about it, end of story.
The drumming perfectly fits the song, not that a wanker like Portnoy would understand.

Portnoy needs to stop trying to stay relevant. No one cares.

OMG do this dude pay for publicity, can anyone tell me one classic that sold more than a few thousand copies of a song portnoy was involved with. This douche gets too much credit for doing nothing but shooting himself in the foot.

I’ve seem Matt Sorum play a few times.
A small show with Guns n’ Roses around 1991, at a drum clinic about the same time, with Velvet Revolver a few years ago at the Whiskey.
He is a very hard hitting, solid, seasoned player.
I’ve also met/talked with him a few times when he had his store on Melrose.
Intelligent down to earth regular kind of guy.
I’ve never seen Portnoy play, never listened to Dream Theatre’s music
