EDGUY Frontman Working On New AVANTASIA Album - Aug. 6, 2012
EDGUY mainman Tobias Sammet is working on a new CD from his AVANTASIA project for a spring 2013 release. According to a post on Sammet's web site, "Concept-wise, the album will be a classic rock opera/metal opera. It's going to be a timeless fairytale that despite its fantasy appeal was inspired by happenings of our modern age and society."

Tobias originally wanted to put AVANTASIA to rest after the release of the "The Flying Opera - Around The World In 20 Days" concert DVD in April 2011, but he has since had a change of heart. He explains, "Even though I love to record and tour with EDGUY, I didn't foresee how much I need AVANTASIA when I decided to finish this chapter of my life in 2011. I didn't know if there would be another AVANTASIA album one day, but I didn‘t feel like doing it. After the worldwide success of the latest studio releases, an arena world tour that was sold out pretty much everywhere, collaborations with childhood heroes like Alice Cooper, Klaus Meine, Rudolf Schenker, Eric Singer of KISS, etc. I 'knew' that I had said everything I could possibly say in the name of AVANTASIA. But that's not what AVANTASIA is all about. I wanna create more great music, I wanna create more fantasy worlds, the bigger and the more epic, the better. And listening to the material that I have created for this forthcoming chapter in the history of AVANTASIA, I know there is no way I am not going to do it! I have got the feeling and the certainty that this is absolutely meant to happen and to be!"

Professionally filmed video footage of AVANTASIA's August 6, 2011 performance at the Wacken Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany can be seen below.

In addition to Sammet, AVANTASIA's lineup for the Wacken performance included the following ten musicians:

* Michael Kiske (HELLOWEEN, UNISONIC) - Vocals
* Jorn Lande (MASTERPLAN) - Vocals
* Bob Catley (MAGNUM) - Vocals
* Kai Hansen (GAMMA RAY, HELLOWEEN) - Guitar, Vocals
* Amanda Somerville (TRILLIUM, EPICA, AFTER FOREVER, KAMELOT)
* Sascha Paeth (EDGUY, RHAPSODY OF FIRE) - Guitar
* Oliver Hartmann (EDGUY, RHAPSODY OF FIRE) - Guitar
* Miro Rodenberg (KAMELOT, EPICA, AFTER FOREVER) - Keyboards
* Robert Hunecke (AINA) - Bass
* Felix Bohnke (EDGUY) - Drums

The AVANTASIA four-disc box, "The Flying Opera - Around The World In 20 Days", entered the official Austrian chart at position No. 1. In Germany, the double DVD that came with the double CD landed on the official album chart at No. 18.

According to a press release, the "The Flying Opera - Around The World In 20 Days" DVD is "a documentary of the legendary 2008 world tour of AVANTASIA, when the band hit the road for the first time to write a new chapter in metal history; traveling around the world with a giant all-star ensemble to bring the metal opera on stage and play on three continents within a few days, crossing the dateline and eventually playing to a total of 400,000 people within only a few weeks. The first DVD contains a live concert with a running time of almost two hours featuring footage filmed at the headlining shows of Wacken Open Air (Germany) and Masters Of Rock (Czech Republic). On the second DVD there [is] a movie, 'Around The World In 20 Days', that gives fans the opportunity to join AVANTASIA backstage and take a look at the surroundings and the thrill behind the scenes that go along with an extensive undertaking such as this. The DVD set portray[s] AVANTASIA 2008 when it all started."

What is Oliver Hartmann's connection to Rhapsody of Fire? Just curious. He's and amazing vocalist by his own right.

He did backup vocals forRhapsody - Rain of a Thousand Flames (2002) and, Rhapsody - Power of the Dragonflame (2002) among others.

And yes he is an amazing singer and guitar player.

I am both pleased and a little disappointed by this news. Love Avantasia and what Tobi accomplished with the tours and the recent "double album" release was great. Can't be anything excited by a new Avantasia "story."

That said, after completing that last chapter, I was really encouraged by Tobi's comments that he was committing to Edguy as his main band again and focused on making music with them. As solid and even great in spots as I thought Age Of The Joker was, it hasn't proved to be the most memorable album in terms of long term replay value since its release. I enjoy it whenever I spin it, but I don't find myself coming back to it as often as I thought I would. My fear is Edguy has really become the side project and the lion's share of Tobi's creative energy goes to Avantasia; Edguy seems destined to get more of the leftover ideas and material. Maybe that's not true or fair, but just seems to me that this news does not help the prospect of us ever getting another truly great Edguy album.

Certainly from a success standpoint Avantasia has far outshined Edguy, so I can understand Tobi's desire to put his energy into the project people seem to enjoy the most vs. slugging it out with Edguy and not getting nearly the same recognition.

In the States it seems like Edguy's recent tours have done well. The double bill with Kamelot a few years back I know gained Edguy a lot of new fans. I am always surprised, however, that Edguy hasn't caught on here as much as other Euro melodic metal bands---because their sound, especially on more recent albums, is one you would think would be a lot easier for US audiences to embrace. Case in point, I'm a huge Sonata Arctica fan, but they have a much more "Euro-centric" sound if you will than Edguy. Yet Sonata can consistently fill over half to 2/3rds or more of my local venue---Palladium in Worcester, MA---whose main stage section I would guess holds about 2,000. Edguy never even plays there when they are in my area and (as a headliner) could definitely only play their second stage/club section which only holds a few hundred. SA seems to consistently sell more CDs here than Edguy too. Sorry for the tangent, but I have always just found it curious that---relatively speaking of course---Edguy hasn't had as broad appeal in the US as other European bands in the same general category. Especially as a live act, Edguy is second to none.

Well said ! I get a little worries that Tobias is spreading himself a little thin, Joker was good, but no Rocket Ride for sure. Maybe if he kept Avantasia as a special thing every 5 years or so, but I'd much rather hear more of his A game in Edguy.
