JOE PERRY Says AEROSMITH's Record Company Doesn't Know For Sure How To Market New Album - Aug. 6, 2012
Steven Tyler admits he's still amazed how AEROSMITH has managed to keep it together over the past 40 years. The singer, whose decision to take the job as a judge on Fox's "American Idol" caused a major rift between him and AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry, explained to LA Weekly in a new interview that somehow when it came time to craft the material on the band's upcoming album, "Music From Another Dimension", they were willing to put all of their personal differences aside for the benefit of the music. "I think at the end of the day the knowledge that holding onto anger is like grabbing something really hot with the intent to throw it at someone else, but you're the one that gets burned," he said. "Short of everyone's egos, there's never really anything that was wrong. I was writing songs and I wrote a book. When I took 'Idol', it kind of shook the apple cart. Instead of being happy for me, there was a lot of jealousy, but it worked out. It was a risk for me, too, but I just wanted to sit next to J.Lo and Randy [Jackson]. I never watched 'Idol'."

"Music From Another Dimension", will arrive on November 6 via Columbia Records. The CD was helmed by producer Jack Douglas, who previously worked with AEROSMITH on classic early albums like "Toys In The Attic" and "Rocks" as well as on 2004's "Honkin' On Bobo".

Asked if AEROSMITH was more interested in keeping the older fans or attracting new ones with the new album, Perry told LA Weekly, "I don't really know who this record is going to appeal to. I don't think the record company knows for sure even how to market it. Certainly there are classic rock stations for classic rock bands to play their classic songs. These are brand-new songs. Will they be classics in 20 years? I don't know. I guess we'll find out in 20 years. They feel like those songs to me but they certainly haven't been played 50 times or 100 times in front of crowds all over the world. All I know is that when I listen back to them, they sound like AEROSMITH songs."

Market it as a phoned-in piece of crap, by a band that can't stand their singer and are just in it for the money, primarily written by outside songwriters, targeted for sexually frustrated 40-50-something housewives.

Also, Tyler can give shout-outs at the Lily Tomlin lookalike contests he's been seen hustling.

Problem solved. Let me know if I can help any further...

or whatever it was called was their last decent album. Neither edgy nor interesting any more.

Sad, but understandable. I reckon that's what happens when you put money before music - and popularity before quality.

That cover is terrible! It looks worse than 'KISS - Monster'.

But what they're saying is a huge problem.
Radio stations only play old songs and refuse to play anything new from bands like Aerosmith. XM & Sirius used to be great but since the Sirius/XM merger a few years ago, the music stations have basically become just like the FM Rock radio stations and play mostly old songs.

As for videos MTV, VH1 & Fuse gave up on playing rock videos years ago. You can still see old rock and metal videos on VH1 Classic but there is no outlet for new rock videos except for YouTube and VEVO.

Everything in the music industry is fucked right now and I don't see anything getting better anytime soon.

Record companies feel the need to "market" a new album, just put it out there. If the album is good, word of mouth will lead to solid numbers. If it's weak, no amount of publicity or promotion will matter. A band like Aerosmith does not need to have their music "sold" to the fans, and label execs should focus more attention on the acts that don't already have an audience and need marketing help. JUST PUT THE ALBUM OUT NOW!!

One poster...

One television promo.. where the band is performing live with quick cut shots...

a web banner or 2...

and just say "the bad boys of bean town" somewhere in there. it worked in the 90s and that was a good era for the band.

:)

A duet with Carrie Underwood sounds like pop radio to me. My wife who listens to pop radio says Legendary Child is not being played, so I assume rock radio is playing it. (I do like the song). The experts will figure something out. Maybe? I'm just praying to God that the new music is reminiscent of their 70's output. This could be their last go round.

steven really has his head of his ass. Joining idol and putting the rest of his bandmates career on hold was a dick move. Thinking their reaction was due to jealousy is ego-trippin from another planet. Guaranteed their dressing rooms are not next to each other. Joe must still be with Steven simply for a paycheck. I predict this new album is 100% uninspired.

if ANY 'record company' doesn't know how to manage an act as big as Aerosmith they deserve to lose whatever respect they have left, which isn't much.
It would be interesting to see how a band as big as Aerosmith would do on a Pledge campaign - not that they need it of course, but think of the moolah!
Just a thought....

we'll break it down somewhat:

1)as mentioned above, there are few radio stations that are interested in supporting new rock music from 'classic' bands

2)Lack of music outlets to play videos(also mentioned above)

3)Aerosmith's lack of cultural impact in the here and now. Last album of new material was released 11 years ago and it was their least selling album since the 'difficult' early to mid 80's period.

4)'Soft Aerosmith' doesn't appeal to the old fans as much as the hard rock Aerosmith. Just Push Play(along with Nine Lives) were soft records, bottom line.

5)Rock has taken a nosedive in popularity over the last decade(in the mainstream).

As for hunches, i bet this new record isn't all that too, maybe that's why the record company has no faith in it.

agree with all of that. The state of rock, and rock radio, outlets, etc, is just sad...as mentioned above, reconnecting with Jack Douglas hasn't changed a thing. There's another Diane Warren song, a duet with Reba McEntire, and a "rocker" like Legendary Child is a watered down Eat the Rich...

it's not "hating" btw. as one of my alltime favorite bands(their classic era), we are not FORCED to swallow what they've served up for 20 years now. Britney, Timberlake, American Idol, Diane Warren...epic sellout.

I am so sick of the same songs by the classic rock groups being played & they're new shit never gets played. It really is beyond funny now. I wonder why the old groups even bother recording new music anymore but I'm glad they do. The best way I see to market new music is get it on a movie soundtrack or video game. Other than that, they're fucked.

If this song was maybe 15-20 BPM faster it wouldn't be too bad. Sad thing is this sounds like an Aerosmith song...from the 90's. I admit I liked the 2 songs from Armageddon soundtrack, but everything else sucked.

Sounds like something out of Get a Grip, which was a great album to me. But honestly, I'm not sure if I like this song though.

That saying, that album cover is one of the worst ones I've ever seen in my life, and I've seen plenty in my 20+ years as a hard rock/ metal fan....

Starting with Permanent Vacation, Aerosmith quit writing their own songs (the singles you hear on the radio anyway). Every one of them was written by an outside writer. I Don't Want to Miss a Thing was offered to Celine Dion and she turned it down. It became Aerosmiths first #1 hit.

On the Pump tour Sebastian Bach called out Steven Tyler for lip synching most of the sets. Tyler admitted it saying it was b/c of the back flips/theatrics.

So, a band that doesn't write their own songs and lip syncs. That sounds more like a boy band to me.

Enough with my rant. I don't want to discredit anything they did before Permanent Vacation but since then they've been nothing but corporate rock/pop stars. Like Brian from Family Guy said "no junk no soul".

you're dead on. A seminal hard rock band, with balls to spare in their heyday...they accepted a song CELINE DION turned down. Joe Perry didn't want to record it, nor did Brad Whitford like the direction. Then enough said. can it. But Tyler loves the pop spot light. disappointing.

The label gave them one chance to make an album on their own, and they served up Done w/Mirrors. Many say its their last good album, but you have to go back further. Have you listened to DWMirrors since 1985? Never mind the abysmal production(demo), but other than maybe 2 or 3 songs, they are half baked. Gypsy, Shame on You, Sheila, The Hop. Not up to par.

Happened to them? "Legendary Child" is garbage. I'm a long time Aerosmith fan and it's sad for a once GREAT band turn into a parody of itself. "Back in the saddle", "Sick as a dog", "No More, No More", "Uncle Salty", "Kings and Queens", "Draw the Line", these are the songs we as fans love to hear. Not a re-hashed song off Get a Grip. I really believe this band needs to go back and do a massive amount of drugs and come out of their musical funk they been in for the last 20 years. Hey BSlash, checking out the Lep show thursday. I'll post a review on here afterwards.

right on...and what happened? I guess it happens to them all, you know? Run out of ideas, or get outside writers...but couldn't they have a couple songs with the simplicity of Uncle Salty. Nothing fancy there, great guitar sound on the solo, minor over dubs....
