ANTHRAX Members Talk About Upcoming 'Worship Music' Re-Release (Video) - Aug. 4, 2012
On July 27, Artisan News spoke to ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Frank Bello at the Camden, New Jersey stop of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival about the band's trip recent to the studio to lay down several cover versions of some of their favorite rock classics.

"By studio, you mean the back lounge of the tour bus, with Rob's [Caggiano, guitar] laptop," Scott quipped. "Yeah, the drums are done and some of the guitars are done, but we're trying to finish off these last two songs — 'Smokin'' from BOSTON and 'Anthem' from RUSH — for this re-release thing of [ANTHRAX's latest album] 'Worship Music' that will hopefully come out in time for the fall tour with a bunch of these bonus tracks on it."

Asked how the band selected which songs to cover, Ian said, "Like everything else, it's kind of like someone says a song and everyone else is like, 'Yeah, that's a good one.' It's really as simple as that. It's songs that in some shape or form we've been playing or jamming on for our whole lives. Because you really don't wanna have to work too hard on these things, although the RUSH song is a bit of a bitch; I can't say that's an easy one. But it's a song we all know and we're all familiar with, so then, of course, you take on the challenge of just really trying to nail it and do it justice."

According to ANTHRAX, they're paying particular attention to the cover of RUSH's "Anthem" in order to recreate the nuances of the original song.

"I have to get every little part of Geddy [Lee, RUSH bassist/vocalist] down, 'cause I'm a fanatic with that stuff, and I have to," Bello said. "I'm still working on little bits. It's great. I love it."

Added Scott: "Charlie [Benante, ANTHRAX drummer] bumped into [RUSH drummer] Neil Peart at the [Revolver] Golden Gods Awards a few months ago, and Neil actually said to Charlie, 'Yeah, we heard you guys are covering 'Anthem'. That's so cool. We put the clip of you playing drums [to the song] up on our web site.' And Charlie, I swear to God, he was like, the light, the glow that was coming off him after that was… I'd never seen anything quite like it."

In addition to the RUSH and BOSTON covers, ANTHRAX is also recording its versions of AC/DC's "T.N.T.", JOURNEY's "Keep On Runnin'" and BLACK SABBATH's "Neon Knights". The latter song is expected to appear on the upcoming Ronnie James Dio tribute album which is being assembled by the singer's widow and longtime manager Wendy Dio.

Lame marketing garbage. Not a bad album, better than any of the John Bush era crap but still doesn't hold a candle to Persistence of Time, Among The Living, or Spreading The Disease

Interesting. The reason why Anthrax needs to re-release the album is because of people like you who ripped them off by downloading the album the first time it was released.

to do something not even KISS has done. Re-release any album 1 year after it was originally released.

Just shows why Anthrax will always be the weakest of the Big 4.

You are 100% right man. I would question Anthrax's management here. Have they ever had quality professional managers? It seems they make completely random business decisions, usually ending up with Charlie, Scott and Co shooting themselves in the foot.

COMMENT | Re-releasing this early is nothing new...

Anthrax will not be the first to have a re-release of their latest album this soon. Early re-releases with bonus discs and revamped artwork and layout have been made for other artists as well, few months after the initial sales - the tour editions of Axel Rudi Pell's The Crest and Scorpions' Sting In The Tail to name a couple of examples. Nightwish recently had a re-release (tour edition) of the latest album Imaginaerum featuring 2 CDs, a bonus DVD and a mediabook with a revamped artwork.

As far as I know, not all artists are planning these re-releases, it's mainly the label. I don't know how this is with Anthrax, though.

My opinion: all versions of the album should be made available simultaneously so that fans could make a real choice as to the version they want to have. Anniversary editions and re-issues are different, anniversary editions come after 15-40 years of time, re-issues are made when the first print is sold out and they usually are the very same album sonically and content-wise if not adding a couple of live bonus tracks, but nonetheless a re-issue is something justifiable and makes the album available again.

Unfortunately, it is common place now, but I still don't like it since I was a first day buyer.

But you're right, and back in the day, Roadrunner was the absolute worst at this. I think every release from Fear Factory and Type O Negative (too lazy to look it up) had special editions within a year or two of the original release. But now it's worse, because there's the Target edition, the iTunes edition, the regular edtion, the box set collector's edition... and if you're a super fan. you're expected to buy ALL of them because each one has one or two tracks different... it's all a bit ridiculous.

It makes people who normally wouldn't pirate feel justified, otherwise ther're getting ripped off.

No wonder the record industry is in the toilet.

all good points, but it is annoying when labels take advantage knowing that fans will douple dip. Roadrunner were the kings of that shit back in the day. Once they realised that digi's were in demand, they would release them sometime _after_ the release of the jewel. They don't do this anymore however, which is good, but it used to piss me off back in the day. not that i'd double dip of course.

Like you suggested, there is obviously a huge difference between re-issuing an album with bonus tracks that perhaps has been around for a while or hasn't been in print, then re-releasing something 6 months later just to cash in.

The cash ins fuck me off.

was probably Rosenfeld's idea. Turd. I'd spend my money on another copy of the new Testament first. I haven't listened to WM for a long time and probably won't. Funny how I bought all of Anthrax's records with Bush online but I could give a shit about them with Joey.

I hate when bands do this. The only was I would possibly buy this is if the packaging is better because I thought the packaging for the original WM release sucked. I hate the cardboard sleeve packaging, you always scratch the cd pulling it in and out.

Yeah, since I already got Worship Music, I'm just gonna download these bonus tracks. No reason to pay for the same songs twice.

Also, Anthrax is not the first band to do this. Remember when Roadrunner used to rerelease special editions of albums like 6-8 months after they came out? Luckily they stopped doing it and release special editions the same day the regular edition comes out.

Also, go see Anthrax live. They were great at Mayhem Fest. Glad they played the side stage. Only complaint was they played like 6 or 7 songs.

...is that people are expected to purchase the expanded edition of an album that they may have already purchased. I will admit, I didn't legally purchase WM. in fact, I don't think I've ever purchased a brand new copy of any Anthrax albums I own... all of them were purchased as used copies; nonetheless, I haven't been impressed with a whole Anthrax record since SoWN, and even with WM, I've only listened to the whole album once since I did d.load it, and the only song on it that I can say I still enjoy is Judas Priest.

But, for example purposes, let's take Anthrax out, and place Opeth in. I purchased ghost Reveries the week it was released. i went to their show & purchased a t-shirt. A few months later, RR re-releases the album w/ the Soldier of Fortune bonus track & the "Making Of..." DVD. being a gigantic Opeth fan, I paid like, $22 for the bonus content. Now, I'll admit, things were slightly different in 05/06, but what get's my goat is the fact that as a legal & faithful consumer, you get almost no recognition for your efforts!

Another example, but different medium- Purchased Batman Arkham City when it came out for like, $60 & it came with a registration code for the Catwoman DLC for free, which was pretty cool, but now, you can purchase the same game for $30, and there's about another $30-45 worth of DLC from PSN. So, if I was to purchase all the DLC for B:AC, I would have invested about $90-100 on a video game, and I'm sorry, it's just not worth it. On the other hand, someone who bought the game 2 weeks ago can now also d.load all the DLC & pay maybe $5 more than I did, but has 30-40% more content than I do. That is just unfair to the strongest supporters of the games sales.

What I'm getting at is this: I feel that with media content, such as games, music & movies, the companies that own the rights need to start giving more "bang for the buck" when you purchase something @ full retail cost. When you buy a new album or video game it should come with a registration code, if you register within 30 days of purchase, you should be able to purchase any future release of bonus content @ a discounted cost. So anyone who purchased the original version of Anthrax's Worship Music for whatever it was, $15 bucks when it came out, shouldn't have to pay $22 for the expanded edition... maybe say $5 for the bonus content, with option for digital d.load or physical copy by mail w/ paid shipping cost. This way, people legally purchasing the music are being shown appreciation by the labels that distribute music.

Another idea I had, was that parent companies, say Sony for example... they could easily offer a service that allows one to visit their website & create a customer profile. anytime you purchase & register one of their media products, you earn X amount of "Sony Rewards" & the amount of points earned has a direct correlation with the product & the price paid. Say you purchase a $10 CD/digital d.load... you earn 100 Sony Points, and the points you earn can be used against the purchase of another product, so you pay less, or the points can be accumulated to where it costs nothing at all. So say you purchase 5 cd's @ $10 ea, you earn 500 points, which would earn you a free record by any artist under the Sony label, or it's child-companies. That's basically a "Buy 5, Get One Free" kind of deal. or, let's say you buy a $250 Sony Home Entertainments System, or a Playstation... well, that earns you 2500 points. Then you can distribute those points anyway you see fit... you can get 5 free CD's, or one free $50 video game. Or you could get 2 free CD's & pay only $20 for a game that would normally cost $50. It's a totally achievable system, and one that really promotes customer loyalty, and also treats the paying consumer with respect, showing appreciation for the people who spend their hard earned money on products that the company offers. It's just that they don't want to do it out of fear of lost profits... but there is zero profit when your products are being stolen anyway. If the situation of illegal downloading was attacked from both sides... basically in creating this Consumer Rewards program, and working w/ ISP's to prevent illegal d.loading, digital media wil gain so much more worth, and I believe will also contribute to restoring the poor economic situations not only in individual coutries, but across the globe.

I guess I see your point, sort of.

Anyway, greatest hits compilations, live albums, re-releases with bonus tracks are all bullshit cash-grabs. If you have nothing entirely new to contribute, you ain't getting my money.
