EXODUS Guitarist RICK HUNOLT Interviewed At France's HELLFEST (Video) - Aug. 4, 2012
RockNLive.org conducted an interview with guitarist Rick Hunolt of San Francisco Bay area thrash metal veterans EXODUS at this year's edition of the Hellfest festival, which was held June 15-17 in Clisson, France. You can watch the chat below.

With Gary Holt still handling guitar duties for Jeff Hanneman on SLAYER's North American and European tours, EXODUS invited none other than former bandmember Rick Hunolt to fill in for the band's summer 2012 other shows.

Longtime EXODUS fans will recall that Hunolt — the other half of the famed EXODUS "H-Team" who is on every studio recording from 1985 through 2004 and co-wrote some of the band's best-known songs such as "A Lesson In Violence" and "Deliver Us To Evil" — left EXODUS after the band's highly-acclaimed 2004 reunion album, "Tempo Of The Damned". "Murder In The Front Row", the recent photo book documenting the pinnacle of the Bay Area thrash scene, aptly documents Hunolt's tenure in the band.

Following his departure, Hunolt was replaced by HEATHEN guitarist Lee Altus.

Hunolt previously rejoined his former bandmates at a special concert in celebration of Holt and Lisa Perticone's wedding on September 24, 2011 at Avalon in Santa Clara, California. He also performed with them at "Bonded By Baloff: A Decade Of Remembrance", a special concert which marked the 10-year anniversary of former EXODUS singer Paul Baloff's passing. The event took place February 4 at the Oakland Metro Operahouse in Oakland, California.

He plays in Exodus, he travels a lot playing music

My therapist has to deal with my stuff

... wait, so he's not "ex-guitarist" anymore? hmmm, it'd be awesome to get him back permanently, nothing against lee, but yeah, not sure what the appropriate title should be ...

but this was a shit interview. perhaps it's the language barrier but the responses were not insightful and Rick was constantly speaking about writing and touring with the word "we" so it begs the question if he's back fulltime.

i sure hope so but have not heard confirmation.

hope he doesn't party too hard and fall back to old ways.

good luck, Rick. you're part of one of the greatest thrash guitar duos ever.

Maiden pulled off the three guitar attack so I can see Exodus doing the same. Either way Exodus will still tear it up.

It would be so cool to have a triple guitar threat in Exodus. Could the intensity ever be topped? Can you imagine the insane solo passages?

I always loved Rick's solos the most... so bluesy with a psychotic edge. Nothing against Gary, in fact their playing complimented each other perfectly. Each made the other sound even better, in my opinion.

I love to read the headline Exodus guitarist Rick Hanolt not ex-Exodus guitarist, Gary I think you should bring Rick back for a 3 guitar attack.

Maiden could afford a fourth or a fifth guitarist if they wanted, Exodus couldn't afford a third one. Logistics and finances would go against it. This band often go on tour without a sound guy to cut expenses so I guess getting another guy on board is the last sane thing to do; unless it triggers more interest into them, make them sell more albums/merch and they get paid better.

if Exodus can't afford 3 guitarists, i'm sorry but i'd vote Lee out.

i know he's a good guy but the best comeback Exodus album was Tempo.

i can't off the top of my head tell you how much Rick wrote, but even if it was mostly Gary, Rick's presence probably was a better editor/bullshit detector than Lee, who's probably too scared to tell Gary when he's in a self-indulgent mood and writing average stuff.

...that is an excellent point. Perhaps, we'll be seeing joint Heathen/Exodus tours from now on (and, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that). I'd personally like to keep both Lee and Rick as guitarists. And, who knows, Gary may be the new guitarist of Slayer...
