BLACK SABBATH Headlines First Day Of LOLLAPALOOZA 2012; Video Footage Available - Aug. 4, 2012
Three-quarters of the original BLACK SABBATH lineup performed last night as the headliner of this year's edition of the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, with founding drummer Bill Ward sitting out the reunion due to a contract dispute. His fill-in is Ozzy Osbourne touring drummer Tommy Clufetos.

This was SABBATH's only North American performance of 2012 as guitarist Tony Iommi continues his treatment for cancer. The rest of the scheduled SABBATH tour dates were played by Ozzy Osbourne and billed as "Ozzy & Friends."

BLACK SABBATH's Lollapalooza setlist was as follows:

01. Black Sabbath
02. The Wizard
03. Beyond The Wall Of Sleep
04. N.I.B.
05. Into The Void
06. Under The Sun
07. Snowblind
08. War Pigs
09. Electric Funeral
10. Sweet Leaf
11. Symptom Of The Universe / Drum Solo
12. Iron Man
13. Faries Wear Boots
14. Dirty Women
15. Children Of The Grave

Encore

16. Paranoid

Drummer Chad Smith of the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS — who are performing at Lollapalooza tonight — told The Pulse Of Radio that he was looking forward to seeing BLACK SABBATH, but added a disclaimer. "I'm little disappointed that — I mean, I'm happy for my hometown boy Tommy on drums, but no Bill Ward," he said. "Disappointing. It's like the VAN HALEN thing — you get back together and then you don't have the guy that's the original guy? [groans]"

Ward in May announced again that he was declining to join his former bandmates for its scheduled 2012 dates, as well as the recording of a new album, due to a contractual dispute.

He also allegedly had his lawyers direct SABBATH to remove him from photos of the band posted at the official BLACK SABBATH web site "so as to not give the public the wrong impression about his involvement in the current BLACK SABBATH lineup," according to a statement issued by the band's publicist.

Bassist Geezer Butler issued a lengthy retort at his own web site, writing that Ward "hadn't told any one of us he was having contractual problems, and frankly those things are worked out between our representatives, and never between the four of us, let alone in public."

Until now, Iommi told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that the members of SABBATH stayed friendly even when there were legal or other issues going on. "We've always been talking. We've always been in touch with each other," he said. "There might be a lawsuit in the thing between us, but we still talk to each other like nothing's happened, you know."

Ozzy, Iommi and Butler are working on their first new album together in 33 years.

I really can't understand why people are so outraged at the use of the Black Sabbath name now when in the past it has been used very liberally without any complaints.

Just a few years ago people were complaimimg that "Heaven and Hell" should be just called "Black Sabbath" even though it only had 2 original members. For a while in the 80's "Black Sabbath" only had 1 original member. Now it has 3 original members and everyone's losing their shit about it. Where's the sense in that?

Blabbermouth and the internet were not around in the 80's. I'm sure there would have been daily complaints posted about the revolving door in Sabbath during the 80's.

The problem is that Tommy Clufuckos just doesn't fit in Black Sabbath. All the other drummers did fit perfectly. Bill Ward, Vinnie Appice, Cozy Powell, Bobby Rondinelli, Eric Singer.

Clufuckos fits better in Marilyn Manson, Steel Panther, Vampires Everywhere, etc.

I'm just glad I got to see them with Bill back in 2001, but it's my fault I was so tired by the time they played because I'd been drinking beer out in the hot sun all day. Still a great memory and they sounded way better than in these videos.

People are losing their shit because we were promised an All Original Members Black Sabbath Lineup and that never came to be, so naturally that's gonna piss alot of people off that were expecting it to be true.. The thing is, although Sabbath has had many different incarnations.you dont hear about the complaints that were occuring back then coz we didnt have the internet and every1 talking bout it ... Believe me, I know people that refuse to believe that Black Sabbath even existed after Ozzy left back in 79 and those people were around back then too

Black Sabbath died after Ozzy got the boot. Black Sabbath died after Bill left. Black Sabbath died after Dio and Geezer exited the fold....and on and on and on. I was highly disappointed about the current Bill Ward news but given this band's history, and Ozzy being my favorite of the singers, I'm not gonna bitch and moan having 3/4 of the originals on board at this point in their lives.

That's how I feel as well. It's still Black Sabbath if Tony and Geezer are together. In fact that has always been Black Sabbath to me, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler.

I don't care who sings, and in fact Ozzy's presence makes it a battle over Ozzy! Ozzy! Ozzy! all night long with too many reality show groupies in the audience who never even listened to a Black Sabbath album. I hate the whole "look Ozzy is playing with his first band" idiocy.

Bill's absence is a bit tougher, but if he doesn't want to do it, can't do it, has too much pride to accept the pocket change he was offered, that's all his decision. Respect him and move on.

At the Download gig you'd hear 'Ozzy! Ozzy!' chants in the beginning, but they were quickly beaten by the 'Tony! Tony!' chants. I love Ozzy to bits, but it was clear the hero was Tony that night, so it was super cool.

i think? really, they are only playing 2 gigs and they couldn't mix it up a bit more. lame.

and to people wondering why many of us are complaining about Bill Ward, it's because we were promised ALL original members. And this petty arguing about money is so lame, 25% each, boom, problem solved....

I'm just glad Tony is still vertical. They can play that exact setlist on a world tour next year, too, if it means they can still play.

Blame Sharon, who certainly took 50% for Ozzy and created this situation. The music business is business, and any member (or member's manager in this case) who gets the upper hand will press that advantage at every opportunity. We know Sharon sued Tony for 50% of Black Sabbath, and that will certainly prevent any 25% split in Black Sabbath ever again. Blame the fucking bitch Sharon.

Ian Paice. Paice and Ward are similar type drummers and let's face it, I don't think any of us, myself included, would complain if Paice did the tour/album. Is there anyone who wouldn't buy the album with Paice on it?

Playing gems from SABBATH, Paranoid, Masters, Vol.4, and even throwing in some Sabatoge and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.....sure Ozzy's voice was giving out..but I am just glad he's still around and can sing the songs! It was kind of strange that the Black Keys were on the bigger of the two main stages but I was near the stage so it did not matter to me....also cool seeing so many young people singing the songs word for word!

"...sure Ozzy's voice was giving out..but I am just glad he's still around and can sing the songs!"

No, dude, this is not the correct way of thinking. It's contradictory. If your voice gives out you're not able to sing the songs.

Ozzy can't sing. However, he *is* around.

A Singer has to have a voice, or he/she is not a singer, regardless of the past. If you chop off both of Tony Iommi's hands, he is no longer a guitarist, even if he shows up onstage and collects your money.

Understand?

Ozzy's voice held up for most of the show..it started to get a little cracked for high notes...but you listen to almost any band live and they play a key lower. I was not going to miss this because it may be the last time we ever get to see Ozzy, Tony, and Geezer live in CHicago.. They rocked lameapalooza....and there are NEVER any metal bands there.

I wonder how many people watched Black Sabbath vs how many people watched The Black Keys.

They seem to me like a White Stripes knockoff, but suddenly they're headlining 2 sold out nights at MSG and headlining every major (and seemingly minor) USA festival (Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza).

Am I missing something here?

You missed the part where the kids in the audience only know Ozzy from the tv show, and have to be told that the two guys standing to his left and right were in his original band, and the guy behind the drum kit wasn't. Then someone has to explain to them again that the two guys with the guitars were not Ozzy's backing musicians from the old days, but rather the guys who wrote the words and music that made Ozzy famous.

First thing I thought the first time I ever heard of them was The WHite Stripes!! Same exact thing too, 2 man band, same kind of music. Ripoff. I'm still wondering how these guys are just automatically some huge popular band now, even though they haven't really done shit before their Brothers album. The worst part is they've won numerous Grammy awards for not doing shit.

Whenever they're done with Ozzy, I'd like to see Sabbath (Iommi and Geezer) tour with Glenn Hughes again. Hughes is easily the "Sabbath vocalist" with the best voice in this day and age. I'd love to hear the songs from the three albums he did with Iommi, the Tony Martin era, and maybe a few rare Ozzy songs thrown in there with Heaven and Hell.

Bill Ward is asking for a ridiculous amount of money. The guy is worth north of $60m and he wouldn't do a charity gig because he would not play for free. He must have representation telling him he's worth a lot more than everyone else in the band. They always split things 4 ways, there all worth between $60 - $75m. They all stand to make a fortune in the next 2yrs. At least $25m a person. I don't understand Bill's reasoning because his plan is to make just residules. I just don't get it. Do it for Tony at least.
