MIKE PORTNOY On State Of Music Industry, DREAM THEATER's 'Images And Words' Album - Aug. 2, 2012
Drummer Mike Portnoy (ADRENALINE MOB, DREAM THEATER, AVENGED SEVENFLOLD, FLYING COLORS) was interviewed last month by Ollie Winiberg of BBC's "Introducing In Essex" radio show during the U.K. leg of ADRENALINE MOB's European tour. You can now listen to the chat in the YouTube clip below. A couple of excerpts follow.

On the current state of the music industry:

Portnoy: "Well, it's tough. On one hand, I like that artists are gaining control of their music again and their bands and their careers. I think that's a great thing that bands can actually maintain that creative and financial control. On the other hand, there's the other side of the coin, which is that artists are getting all of their music ripped off as well, and record companies are folding and sales are down. So it's a double-edged sword, but it's the nature of the business, and you've gotta roll with the changes."

On whether he's had any particularly bad experiences during his career that he hopes to never repeat:

Portnoy: "Well, strangely enough, one of DREAM THEATER's most successful and popular albums, 'Images And Words', which I am extremely proud of, it was an incredible difficult to make. So, actually, as much as I look back at that album and the tour and the explosion that happened as a result of it — I mean, I look back at all that with great, great memories — the making of the record was very, very difficult, because it was our first record with a major label and they made us work with a producer, who made a great-sounding record, but was very, very hard and difficult to work with; he wasn't really a 'people person.' So the making of that record was very painful and difficult from a personal point of view. So, yeah, even though I love everything in the catalog and I'm proud of it all, some of them were [more] painful or harder to make than others, but the end result is something that I've always been proud of."

On the commercial success of "Images And Words":

Portnoy: "That is pretty amazing that we were able to get away with what we were doing, especially in 1991, and that was the height of the whole NIRVANA explosion. I don't know… On paper, you would think that would have been a recipe for the biggest disaster, but maybe that's why that album did well — because we kind of stuck out like a sore thumb at the time."

Great drummer, annoying person, part of horrible and boring bands (past, present, future). I never got the hype. They should do a Roast of Mike Portnoy. He would just run out of the building after a few minutes.

I took DTs side in the whole drama that unfolded, he can be a bit of an idiot at times but I can see that Mike is quite a nice guy who cares about his fans and the music.

Friend of mine went to a DT signing for one of the albums that came out. And when my buddy went over to the table to get his CD signed and all. He said Portnoy was a total POS the whole time, Ego tripping and was all upset about something. Then he left the place after that. While rest of DT stood there to greet fans etc. Just goes to show what a coward Mike is!

Full disclosure that I'd only ever heard "Jet City Woman" on the radio til all this Queensryche drama and I'm not a big fan of that band, yet I've been a DT fan since the FII era.

Is it just me or were they almost marketed and presented as a Queensryche knockoff during the I & W era? The drum sound, image of the band onstage, graphics on the guitar, everything.

I know they tried touring together at one point but had no clue until recently how influenced DT obviously were by them.

Liar, Portnoy recognized you from Blabbermouth abd tried to avoid you.

And maybe someday you'll tell us about your beef with Randy Blythe.

maybe it did well because the single was an 80s hangover and there was still some interest in real muso oriented rock that wasnt completely shit.

either way, images and worda is still their.best selling album by far in the U.S.

Why thumbs down? Jocques is 100% right, becoming competent is simply a matter of time and practice, being able to write is something you either have or you don't, it's like wit... You can't learn how to be witty

We all know a bedroom shredder who is impossible to jam with and can't write a riff to save his life

And if you don't - you are that guy

vow how old are you guys??? Portnoy is a great drummer even if you like Dream Theater or not, they are one of the best bands ever, but maybe you dont like them, that doesnt mean they arent good.
and what did Portnoy do to you personally??? probably nothing.
and he wouldnt be playing with these great bands and players if he wasnt any good.
and sometimes its great to listen to realy good bands that can actually play something more then simple pop/rock/metal stuff, and sometimes its great to listen to simple stuff.
and Avenged Sevenfold are also a very good band even if you dont like them, i dont listen to them that much but still a fine band

It's amazing you didn't quit DT earlier than you did.

I guess mid-life crisis metal is easy for you.

and so what some guy in a band is boring one time or whatever at a meet and greet, they cant always be smiling and happy. but from what i have seen from mike he seems to care a lot for his fans and trys to do anything for them. but of course he has a big ego, so would you if you could play any instrument as good as him.
