SLASH Says VELVET REVOLVER 'Really Wanted To Work With' OURS Singer - Aug. 2, 2012
Tim Louie of The Aquarian Weekly recently conducted an interview with legendary guitarist Slash (GUNS N' ROSES, VELVET REVOLVER). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

The Aquarian Weekly: First of all, congratulations on becoming the newest star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame!

Slash: Oh, thank you (laughs). Yeah, it was very, very cool! On the personal level, it had a significant feeling for me because it was totally where I grew up and a lot of my young adult and adult experiences all across the board and every extreme happened all in that particular neighborhood. Even from when I started playing guitar in my first band, and even for GUNS N' ROSES, it was all within that fuckin' however many square-mile radius. And so it was very sort of a… not what you call an achievement, but it was definitely sort of a very personal kind of milestone, I guess, for me.

The Aquarian Weekly: How does it feel to be put in the same category as a Jimmy Page or a Joe Perry when it comes to legendary guitarists?

Slash: Dude, I'm not even going to answer that one! I don't even see myself in the same light as those two guys. In fact, they are the reason why I picked up the guitar in the first place and the only reason that I do what I do. To say that I fit in the same category as those guys would be an injustice to them, but I do appreciate the compliment!

The Aquarian Weekly: Where do we stand with VELVET REVOLVER? Because, I remember seeing footage of my bud, Jimmy Gnecco [OURS], joining you guys on stage for a few songs [see video below]. What happened there?

Slash: Actually, we jammed with Duff [McKagan] last night! Unfortunately, as for VELVET REVOLVER, we'll remain on a hiatus until we find the right singer to replace Scott [Weiland]. Jimmy Gnecco is an amazing singer and we really wanted to work with him. The unfortunate thing was that our schedules conflicted. Whenever we wanted to fly him out to work with us, he was already engaged in something else, but Jimmy was without a doubt the type of singer we were looking for! He was amazing!

...Simply Red? You (Slash) were there at the Hall inductions, that dude kicked ass!

...I was, of course , half joking. He would never fit, but GODDAMN did he sing his balls of that night. I was blown away!
And if you're not going to have him VR, at least release some of the Cory Taylor shit as B-sides, or internet only releases. I know everyone here on BM think Cory is a dick (at best!) , but the dude has a killer voice and Id bet it sounds excellent with the band.

VR = vegetative state. Pull the plug and move on.

Like I said yesterday, get Duff to sing. They might not think of Duff as "a real frontman" but his vocals would fit and they wouldn't have to worry about all the other bs!!

Liked their studio work but I can't think of a band that looked more disjointed when playing live. I know Weiland is quirky to work with but Slash must dislike him more than I realized, especially since Weiland appears recently to have wanted to have another go with VR but was shot down. Either that, or he/they just feel Scott can't ramp things up live anymore the way that VR wants. Maybe a bit of both.

I have to agree. But I don't think his vocals go well with the rest of the VR guys!!

Its because he is happy with Myles and Co. at this point. I wouldn't be suprised if VR is dead and gone...

Jimmy Gnecco is a PROFOUNDLY good singer, and Ours has some incredible songs. Check out the Mercy album (produced by legendary Rick Rubin) on youtube for proof of that. Ours has a kickstarter campaign to record their new album, and i just donated today. While i'm surprised Jimmy wouldn't scoop up an offer to be a part of something this huge, i respect him even more for wanting to focus on his own thing.

I always thought Ed Roland of Collective Soul would be a good fit for Velvet Revolver.

I still believe they will get back with Scott when ever they run their course doing the solo bands.

Jimmy has more depth and soul for the band to work with. His sound isn't as cutting or rocking as VR, but that can be worked on.

Jimmy strongly reminds me of the late great Jeff Buckley in this clip.

I've been a massive fan since I first heard Distorted Lullabies, just an incredible band and Jimmy is one hell of a singer/songwriter.

Thanks for the mention of the Kickstarter, will definitely be helping out to ensure we have new Jimmy Gnecco music.

Fire the other useless guitar player, get Izzy and have Izzy and Duff on vocals.

This is getting fucking ridiculous. I think the reason why they haven't found a singer is because they don't want a singer.

just seems at odds with the rest of VR to me. His voice has too much of that husky, kinda velvety-smooth (no pun intended) vibe about it. Musically VR has a more rough-and-tumble, punk attitude to it. No, I don't think Weiland was a good frontman for that band to begin with.
Leave him in Stone Temple Pilots; he is definitely in his element there.
As for VR, have that braid-wearing, three-hour-late, leave-early- because -someone- threw- something- on- stage, still-has-sand-in-my-vagina diva sing for them.

Oh wait, that happened already in a past life.... Fuck it.

sucks, he's singing without any emotion. Comes across pretty flat and uninspiring. There is only one singer for Velvet Revolver and his name is Scott Weiland.

Why keep looking, Slash has said no to Ian Thornley, Travis Meeks, Royston Langdon, Corey Taylor, etc. How many more guys will they keep auditioning only to turn them down?

Slash has his own Chinese Democracy in the form taking years & years to find a new singer for VR. Really who cares anymore?!
