New QUEENSRŸCHE Singer: We Are Not Using Any Backing Tracks With GEOFF TATE's Vocals - Aug. 2, 2012
The official promotional photo of the new QUEENSRŸCHE lineup can be seen below (courtesy of Mike Savoia Photography).

The new QUEENSRŸCHE made its official live debut as the headliner of the last day of this year's Halfway Jam, which took place July 26-28 in Royalton, Minnesota.

In response to a number of questions regarding his vocal performance at the concert, the new QUEENSRŸCHE singer Todd La Torre (also of CRIMSON GLORY) posted the following message on his Facebook page:

"I've been asked about backing vocal tracks and that many believe they are hearing [original QUEENSRŸCHE singer Geoff] Tate's voice on them. Let me clearly state that there are NO backing vocals with his voice in ANY songs with my performance. Any tracks that have accompanied backing vocals have all been re-recorded with my voice and Eddie's [Jackson, bass]. We don't use any tracks to fake a lead vocal with me, but to simple give a fuller nicer sound to a chorus as backing vocals, NOT to replace my lead vocal role. Yes, they are very similar and would naturally be heard as Geoff's, but they are not. All recordings are time-stamped and recorded in the computer and Pro Tools and my point is indisputable."

He added, "[I] just needed to clarify that, and I also sing the full chorus live to 'Empire' since some have asked me about that."

QUEENSRŸCHE's setlist for the Halfway Jam was as follows:

01. Queen Of The Reich
02. Speak
03. Neue Regel
04. Walk In The Shadows
05. En Force
06. I Don't Believe In Love
07. Child Of Fire
08. The Whisper
09. Warning
10. Spreading The Disease
11. The Needle Lies
12. Prophecy
13. Take Hold Of The Flame
14. My Empty Room
15. Eyes Of A Stranger
16. Empire
--------------
17. Wrathchild (IRON MAIDEN cover)
18. Jet City Woman
19. Roads To Madness

An audio-only recording of the "Roads To Madness" performance is available below.

QUEENSRŸCHE members Michael Wilton (guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass), Scott Rockenfield (drums) and Parker Lundgren (guitar) announced on June 20 that they were parting ways with Geoff Tate and recruiting La Torre as his replacement. The new QUEENSRŸCHE lineup previously played two shows in their home city of Seattle under the name RISING WEST.

Wilton, Jackson and Rockenfield defeated Tate's motion for a preliminary injunction on July 13 that would have kept them from touring and operating under the band name,

Tate and his wife, Susan, QUEENSRŸCHE's former manager, filed a lawsuit against Geoff's ex-bandmates on June 22 in King County Superior Court over whether he should be awarded the QUEENSRŸCHE name after being dismissed from the group in June. Their complaint states Rockenfield, Wilton and Jackson wrongfully fired the singer and are tarnishing the group's brand by attempting to move forward without him.

If the case goes to trial, the date is set for November 18, 2013.

In the meantime, Wilton, Jackson and Rockenfield, along with Lundgren and La Torre have launched a new web site at QueensrycheOfficial.com.

Lundgren was briefly married to Geoff's stepdaughter Miranda; they have since divorced.

Is the name really worth fighting for? Just go forward as Rising West. Either way, you're still going to be playing in clubs!

They need to redesign the band logo. It looks fuckin' cheap. It reminds me of how low-rent the cover and packaging was for Skid Row's last album, 'Revolutions Per Minute'. Even if you're broke you can still come up with something a little less cheezy-looking and amateur. Shit like that matters when you're trying to promote stuff.

The band photo is better than the last one they had. Thank god he's not doing the Scott Stapp with his arms open and shit.

I agree, but they are selling this as a "return of OLD Queensryche"....playing "the first 5 records". This guy is not half of what Tate was then, and throw in you have a kid filling in for the guy who wrote the most of the material in DeGarmo. It's a cover band without the best 2 guys, the guys that wrote the songs. Pass.

I agree. This is not Queensryche without Tate and Degarmo. For christ sake, its like having GnR without Axl and Slash or Areosmith without Tyler and Perry. The caveman is doing an ok job signing the old songs but this is NOT Queensryche...Its a glorified tribute band!

I would think that more people could actually appreciate the fact that Geoff still sounds good given his age... 53 and how many other singers that have sung for 30 years plus can sound as clear and still reach to some of their high end vocal range. I saw GT in June.. right before all this junk went down and I enjoyed his show in the Acoustic setting. Other heavy metal bands have done some acoustic sets for MTV and you can't knock them because they played different arrangements of their own music. Damn... Geoff wants to change and grow into something... not "be the same as the music was 30 years ago" doesn't anybody get this ??? I can see some of you do but to those that don't... hope the new guy can bring a sound that represents Him and not sounds like Geoff !

Whether you think Tate's been ruining this band, singing isnt good , everything sucks since Empire, the other guys were Queensryche 30 years ago before Tate, etc.
This isnt Queensryche anymore. And what does Parker have to do with Queensryche ?
Get a new name and some originality.
And I know this is in the past but, Tate blew this guy away in his prime.
These guys are not going to do any better . Look at all the people this night that only know songs off Empire which apparently they dont want to play much of because they want to be " oh soo heavy "
Mark my words, when they go out on the road, and, people dont see Tate they wont be back next time.

The new guy sounds close enough to Tate that all this band has to do is record a decent album. It does not have to be earth shattering or mind blowing, just good..and the fans that turned there backs after Empire will be back.

When Dio left Rainbow Graham Bonnet didn't try to be Dio. He brought in his own sound and style. Queensryche brought this Todd character in to pretend that he's Geoff.

I find it humorous that this post of mine received 16 thumbs down. So all 16 of you feel that Todd's voice sounding very much like Tate's had nothing to do with his getting the gig?

Or were the thumbs down because you feel that Graham bonnet did try to sound like Dio?

i have to chime in and disagree ... after ronnie left rainbow they were never the same ... blackmore's ego got the best of him ... for me - ronnie james dio was rainbow and had rainbow not gotten graham bonet to replace ronnie and gotten someone who sounded at least a little similar, i would've continued to listen to rainbow ... so yes, rainbow was still called rainbow but wasn't the same ... went from dio's lyrical stylings to ... not rjd ... lol ... but i digress ... and blackmore tried to go commercial ... he hit it with joe lynn turner and "stone cold" but was it worth it? ... anyway ... when sabbath replaced ozzy with rjd, their MUSIC didn't change ... their PERSONA didn't change ... and rjd was more than a worthy replacement for ozzy ... so ... your analogy is invalid ... lol

When Ozzy left Sabbath Dio did fit in very nicely as a replacement. However again, he didn't try to sound or sing like Ozzy did. But with this Todd guy Queensryche is looking for a replacement for Geoff who sounds and singe like Geoff. They aren't looking to evolve like the other bands that we've discussed, they're trying to relive their past.

This will be a failure. The other guys in queensryche are motivated by greed - they are trying to capitalize on their old metal sound because that's what made them popular. Newsflash: metal isn't popular anymore, and they've lost too much of their fanbase to ever reach the heights that they once reached.

Once they see that queensryche is nothing without Tate, they'll get rid of this copy-cat hack they have singing for them at the moment.

Anyone who thinks this guy is better than Tate needs to free up the massive amounts of shit clogging their ears.

What, and that half arsed pop rock symphonic crap was more popular? You sir are a tool, Metallica, Maiden, Megadeth etc are all arguably as big as ever, I'd say Maiden are probably at their biggest now and this band want to produce a classic Qr album. Now that will sell

Susan isn't paying anyone. People are coming to their senses.

Here's another news flash: as people grow old, their voices weaken. It happens to everyone, even Tate, Halford, and Dickinson. Here's the problem, though. Queensryche are trying to capture their old sound. Their old sound includes an unstoppable Tate. Anything that queensryche releases will be compared to their old sound, and the fact that this guy is trying to sound just like Tate won't help the comparisons people will instinctively make. If they wanted a new singer, they should have hired someone who would have brought something different to the band...not someone who will continually remind us of how good Tate and queensryche USED to be.

To the other user who posted some nonsense about maiden and Metallica still being popular, therefore suggesting that metal is still popular today, dont fool yourself. Maiden and metallica are still really popular, yes, but they built their fanbase 3 decades ago when metal was still popular. How many new metal bands do you see today with the ability to garner similar amounts of popularity as maiden and metallica have?

TLT is good and has Geoff's voice and inflections down but, hey, let's be real, he is no Geoff Tate. Geoff may be past his prime now, but back in 1986, Tate would have wiped the floor with TLT.

I like TLT but he is not perfect. He butchered Walk In The Shadows and couldn't hit most of the high notes. He does have a great voice though. If I have a knock on the guy, he tries too hard to sound like Tate. I also think he tries too hard to be metal; he headbangs like he is in Testament.

Queensryche continuing on in any successful fashion depends solely on whether or not they can deliver a NEW KILLER album. That is the bottom line.

Christ, he sang these songs with QR live once, and you judge him to have 'butchered' them? I'm sure he will grow into the songs and master them.

Personally, I think this is the best thing to happen to QR at this stage. Yes, the two key members are absent. But the spirit of the band is back.

I would honestly rather have this than another Op Mindcrime II. What a fucking rip off album, not even a band effort. And I didn't even get the last two records they put out b/c the weak shit on Mindcrime II was so vomit inducing it put me off.

Even if we get a glorified tribute band, fuck it, I would rather have a solid metal QR record than Goeff Tate's terrible, terrible watered down radio pop-rock crap.

They all f'd over the main creative force behind their band as if they could do better without them, yet in replacing them they looked for a clone to sound like the original as much as possible. Where are they now? 'Nuff said.

QR is dead, deal with it people.

If you think Steve Perry was the main creative force in Journey, you are obviously a stupid person or employed by Susan Taint.

Also no one fucked over Jack Russell. He fucked himself over by not taking care of himself. Dude couldn't even stand up at the end of his time in Great White, wow that's rock and roll, sitting in a chair on stage.

Kind of similar to how Geoff Taint failed to take care of his voice and had to force his band to move in a different musical direction to accomodate his declining abilities. Take some responsibility for yourself, you asshole singers, instead of trying to control your bandmates.

Learn to read and do some research, Neal Schon himself said in interviews that Steve Perry had full creative control of that band. He said that whatever Steve wanted to do, the band went along with it.
Whether you liked Perry or Journey, facts are facts.
You may think I'm stupid, but you're the ignorant ass who can't back up what you say.

That is simply laughable. LOL hilarious! Hi Geoff and Susan! The singer has full creative control of the band, and all the other guys went along with whatever he wanted! LOL!!! You know Neal Schon started that band and Steve Perry was a roadie and not the original singer, right? Oh, you didn't know that Geoff and Susan, well do a little research Taints and learn about something other than wine and whine.

Everyone with brain activity knows that Steve Perry isn't the original singer from Journey. That does not dismiss the fact that during his time in the band, the others basically put him behind the wheel and it is well documented. You think the fact they have a new (completely mediocre) album out means they still have creative juices? Mediocre is the perfect word to describe any future QR has.

You're the only taint in this conversation, Riotass.

Tate family alert!!! Everone get on blabbermouth and run down the new singer. Rave about Geoff and we will sway public opinion.

Sorry bitches...it won't work. Geoff and Susan ran this once great band into the fucking ground every way imaginable. Not to mention Geoff lost 90 percent of his voice the last ten years. Geoff will end up doing lounge music in clubs and coffee shops once they lose the final legal battles. And queensryche will be reborn with a talented new singer who cares about the music, fans, and the concept of a real band democracy. Dont kid yourselves, degarmo will resurface to some extent with qr very soon.

Can't believe he admitted his band uses fake back-up vocals. Lame as fuck.

Take Motley Crue - please! Heh. Their fake back-vocal tracks are so fucking obvious. Kiss - same thing.

Might as well just record everything - then these lazy asses don't even have to play.

WOW. Almost half of the songs they played have been co-written by someone who is actually still in the band? AMAZING. These guys must be the real deal!

Let's take a look at the real numbers:

14 for Tate.
11 for DeGarmo.

0 for Rockenfield.
0 for Jackson.
0 for Lundgren.
0 for La Torre.

I agree, bruce sounds better than 85-92..but maybe not as good as 82-84, but were splitting hairs. Bruce has made strides in getting his voice to sound great live. Listen to the screeches on Live After Death (like the end of FLight of Icarus or Aces High) and listen to Aces High NOW, he's easily better and more controlled.

MIchael Wilton has contributed to just as much classic QUeensryche material (back in the day) as Smith did. If you look as Songwriting credits, as a matter of fact, he wrote MORE or cowrote more than Smith did. The setlist has NINE songs cowritten with Wilton, and ten with Degarmo. So if you fuckers who wanted Ryche to go grunge, as Degarmo would have had, stop licking the guys balls. Yeah, I acknowledge the guy had a huge impact, but Hear in the Now Frontier had a lot of shitty songs. I'm all for growth, but give Todd a chance. He's written whole albums he's recorded HIMSELF! and theyre full fledged prog metal albums- check him out on youtube. I agree, his voice isn't as "SMOOTH" as Tate's back in the day, but you're forgetting the fact Tate tried to beat up/kill the other guys (who knows). You're defending a psychopath. Stop.

had no strategy other than to bring up the 81% of lyrics that Geoff Taint wrote. Never mind that Geoff Taint never wrote music or a complete song by himself, never mind that the other guys hired him to be their singer, never mind that he and his wife controlled the second guitar slot for years, never mind that his wife laundered money through the bands bank accounts, never mind that Geoff Taint assaulted his bandmates. All they had is Geoff Taint songwriting credit percentage 81%, everyone else less than that.

If you think Todd is the second coming of Christ, its your opinion...But I have mine. I dont understand why you think I'm licking Tate's balls because I dont like this Queensryche version? Grow up!

I liken the whole thing to the mid eighties Pink Floyd debacle. Roger Waters basically said "he was the band" and sued the guys for keeping the name when the other guys wrote a huge percentage of the music. Yes, Waters brought in sketches and concepts and vocal melodies and lyrics (Id be willing to bet that Tate only brought in concepts, lyrics and some vocal melodies, as a little more research into it I've found Degarmo wrote many of those as well), but to claim that he was the band was pure megalomania. And solo Waters is DECENT, but it missed the magic that the rest of the band gave. And the Final Cut was basically a Waters solo album with some Gilmour vocals and solos here and there lol. Its pretty amusing actually and weird how similar it is. However, one thing is different, they have a new guy who has a lot of concepts, vocal melodies and lyrics himself. I doubt the guys would just hire some Tate clone, or whatever have you. The guy is a good guitarist, drummer, keyboardist, etc as well as vocalist. So you're basically replacing Degarmo and Tate with La Torre. And if you check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIyCKLa99IE it definitely shows some promise. Get Neil Kernon or Andy Sneap, iron out the kinks, and I think its definitely a new era for the band. people complain about bands without key members (and as I've already mentioned, Wilton cowrote 9 of the songs on this setlist, so people are dumb) but they forget about bands that have NO original members but carry on the spirit of the band, example: Napalm Death. Not that I agree with all the politics 100 percent or anything, but theyre doing the same type of thing and have a lot of the same goals as they did in the beginning, and with no original members left (it took a long time but all the original membersleft by the time Mick Harris quit). In summation, give the new guy a chance people.

"When Dio left Rainbow Graham Bonnet didn't try to be Dio. He brought in his own sound and style. Queensryche brought this Todd character in to pretend that he's Geoff."

A huge difference. Blackmore was in charge, and absolutely didn't want Bonnet to emulate Dio. He had, after all, fired Dio for a reason.

Queensryche hired Todd because he could bring what Tate couldn't do anymore. If the fans could have gotten 1985-Tate back, we would have preferred that. But that's not possible, so a sound-alike is the next best thing.

You gotta rememeber that this isn't normal singing, where you can bring in a lot of soul and your own qualities. You have to nail a certain sound, or the old songs will sound terrible. You can't really do much differently.

I am 100% sure when Queensryche release a new album, Todd will bring in a lot of the metal rawness he uses with his other projects, and that we quite frankly have always missed in Queensryche. Personally, I've always thought Tate's voice sounded a little too whiney and thin on a lot of the songs, including classics like Queen Of The Ryche and The Needle Lies.

So here is a novel thought.....let things be. QR will never be the same as it was thirty years ago or as it was when Geoff was a member. His voice was a signature and something that cannot be duplicated by any other vocalist, no matter how much hate mail is exchanged. Using the QR name is cheating, it is an all or nothing game, either you have alll the members or you dont and if you dont change the name. Scott, Mike, Eddie, Parker.... sorry new guy I dont recall your name.. but touring as "QUEENSRYCHE" is a falicy. Fans expect QR and QR is Geoff, Scott, Mike, Eddie and Parker... well Chris really but Parker or Kelly...et al. Do the fans a favor, drop the name, go back to Rising West and write songs that are your own. Let the legacy live on with the old members and write a new chapter that doesnt include riding on the coat tails of something that isnt really you. Let the fans decide... I know that I would welcome a new look with a new vocalist and new name.... -vs- what is happening now which is an attempt to recreate what CANNOT be recreated..... kitn
