Legendary ROADRUNNER RECORDS A&R Man MONTE CONNER Exits Label - Aug. 2, 2012
Roadrunner Records Senior VP A&R Monte Conner, who signed countless bands to the label over the years — including ANNIHILATOR, BIOHAZARD, COAL CHAMBER, DEICIDE, DEVILDRIVER, FEAR FACTORY, GOJIRA, LIFE OF AGONY, MACHINE HEAD, OBITUARY, RUSH, SEPULTURA, SLIPKNOT, STONE SOUR, TRIVIUM and TYPE O NEGATIVE — has left the company after 25 years.

The label couldn't let him just slip quietly out the door, so he was visited in his office on his last day (Wednesday, August 1) by a special guest — Troy Norr, vocalist for the KING DIAMOND tribute act THEM. Check out video footage below.

Roadrunner's recent "restructuring" under parent label Warner Music Group resulted in roughly 36 staff members worldwide being let go and several regional offices being closed (including the office in the U.K.).

In the U.S., Roadrunner is continuing to operate as a standalone frontline label, although 16 staffers in the States have lost their jobs, according to Billboard.biz. In addition, Roadrunner Records founder/CEO Cees Wessels left the label 17 months after the completion of its sale to the Warner Music Group.

Initially founded in the Netherlands in 1980, Roadrunner Records earned its place as one of the most prominent international independent record labels. The Roadrunner catalog boasts early releases from such seminal artists as KING DIAMOND, TYPE O NEGATIVE, SEPULTURA and ANNIHILATOR. More recently, the label has experienced unprecedented success with multi-platinum artists NICKELBACK and SLIPKNOT, gold-certified STONE SOUR and KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, as well as modern heavy hitters TRIVIUM and MACHINE HEAD.

Video below: Monte Conner accepting Inspiration award and speaking on behalf of Roadrunner Records at Metal Hammer Golden Gods awards in June 2012:

Truly the end of an era. I remember when Roadrunner and Earache ruled the extreme metal world back in the early 90s. Good luck Monte! Oh and first post down your throats suckas!

What was that "hidden" chant in one (or more) of those Bloody Kisses songs - 'Monte Conner sucks cock' or something? Classic TON humor :-)

Anyway, good luck/riddance. RR was the SHIT and could do no wrong back in the late 80s/early 90s

In the early 90s I had the pleasure of being scouted by Monte while in Collapsing Lungs. Great guy! He said first and foremost he looks for bands that really have some "balls".

Monte Connor = Legend

If my label was responsible for Nickelback, Slipknot, and Machine Head, I'd want to leave too. Yuck.

Nickelback has sold millions of records under the Roadrunner label. If Monte Conner is responsible for signing Nickelback, he's a genius.

Just because you don't LIKE all the bands he signed, it doesn't diminish what he has done for Heavy Metal over the years. Grow up.

VOIVOD!

25 years and all he gets is a tribute band singer. Harsh. Hope he is not done with the metal world he's an important figure, whether or not you like every band he signed isn't the point, his influence on metal is undeniable!

Bummer about the tribute act guy - what, the label could (would not) pony up the cash to fly in the real deal?

Things must be really bad - that or next to no one gives a fuck.

He's a cool guy. I imagine he was probably given a choice of either bowing out gracefully or being let go. He appears on the occasional episode of the Podcast Skull Sessions and he knows his stuff.

Only an IDIOT would give thumbs down to this, as this is the chanting in Type O Negative's Can't Lose You.

Anyway, this is very sad news, I never met him but we sent e-mails back & forth. For some reason I was angry at him for the way I thought TON was being treated in RR. I wrote something to that effect here bashing him, he e-mailed me. A very very kind guy, he answered lots of my questions regarding Type O Negative & Carnivore and this was some 7 years ago. With his departure, RR is officially dead.
