SLAYER's KING On Next CD: Fans Can Expect Same Record We've Been Giving Them For Last 20 Years - Aug. 1, 2012
TheToneKing.com conducted an interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King at a recent stop of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. In this, the second part of the chat, Kerry talked about the Mayhem Festival tour, the stage show, the fans, the upcoming SLAYER album and the history behind the KFK (Kerry "Fucking" King) branding. You can now watch the interview below.

Asked what fans can expect from the forthcoming SLAYER CD, Kerry said, "They can expect the same record we've been giving them for the last 20 years. That's basically what it is. It's the AC/DC of thrash metal. You know what you're gonna get. The unpredictableness is the predictable part of it. We keep the train on the tracks, but we experiment with anything we can think of on the way."

SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya recently spoke to Gary Graff of Billboard.com about the band's plans for the remainder of the year after it wraps its run on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival in early August. "We'll probably get together and start writing together and start making a new album," he said. "I think after [Mayhem] we'll just go back to the drawing board and take a look at what we've got and start putting it together. These days we're a bit more like, 'Let's see what comes out.' We don't chomp at the bit like we did in the early days. You just sort of have to let it happen and see what the end result is, and hopefully we'll like it...Everything we've done as a band has been like that — 'Wow, let's do it.' We know the outcome is going to be good."

Regarding the status of guitarist Jeff Hanneman — who in January 2011 contracted necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, and has been undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and intense rehab since — Araya said, "Jeff's had a long ordeal. He's working on his playing ability, and that's something that's gonna take some time. He's working on strengthening his arm and his ability to play. He can play, but it's not for an extended period of time. Like anything else when you have some kind of not only muscle damage but nerve damage, it takes a bit for a lot of your functions to come back. They're not going to come back and easy and quick."

He added, "On this [latest tour] more than others it's dawned on me that he's not there. The audiences have been very favorable, capacity crowds, really good. I just kind of look out and think, 'Jeff, God, where are you? You worked 30 years for this. You should be here.' He should be enjoying this part of his career. I can't wait for him to (be back)."

EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt is filling in for Hanneman on SLAYER's summer tour, which kicked off at the end of May at All Tomorrow's Parties in England.

Slayer and AC/DC are two bands who really can't go off experimenting.

Imagine if Slayer or AC/DC put out a Lulu? They'd be out of business.

Well, at least he's not liar like most other musicians. I'm sick of hearing bands saying "This new CD is the best thing we've ever done and it's so much better than everything we've done in the past."

Then you hear the CD and it sounds exactly like everything they did before just not as good.

At least Kerry King is honest with his fans.

Why do people constantly complain that Slayer keeps making the same CD over and over again?

When they did something a little different with the 'Diabolus in Musica' CD, everyone bitched about how it didn't sound like what they did previously.

The last Slayer album I liked front to back was Divine. Now Slayer had 1/2 killer songs on a CD with the other 1/2 filler or just average. Thats still batting good after 30 years and I say bring back Jeff and record some new tracks

Some songs are just horrible on it while 1/2 is good. I don't like the production it it, sounds like Diablous in a way.

If World Painted Blood didn't exist, I'd say the last great Slayer album was Divine Intervention, but seeing as WPB does exist, I'd say the last great Slayer album is that one...
It sounds lik a mix between 1985 and 1990 Slayer. I'm not sure how any old skool Slayer fan fails to rate that album.
If the new album is better, then great!

I think it's a great album with the exception if Americon, Human Strain and Hate Worldwide. Playing with Dolls dosn't fit, but it's demented as fuck and I dig it. I agree with you on the production, I like it, sounds like it was recorded in 1988.

Well, Hate Worldwide is good, especially live, but it's not a special song, pretty average in the contexts of better Slayer attempts but still good. I like Human Strain and Playing With Dolls... demented indeed !

Kerry has been balding since the late 1980's, I don't think he would grow hair back if he tried. If I had a bald head, I would grow a bread. No hair on the face with a blad head makes some people look like an alian or undergoing chemo.

I am a dick, and I understand loyalty, but Hanneman is done, and Gary Holt completely shits all over both Kerry and Jeff, and anyone who doesn't recognize that is an idiot. Good for Holt, Slayer is lucky to have him, and I'm sure they know that.

hasn't sunk to the same depths as Metallica these last 21 years - they still manage to come up with 2-4 good songs on each album, as opposed to maybe 4 good songs over that entire time span - that doesn't mean that their next album will deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as SOH, RIB or SITA.

plur

i really dont know why ppl (especially kk himself) make like theyve been doin the same album over and over for however long. every album clearly has its own vibe, musically speaking. for instance, diabolus and god hates us all were kinda similar but a natural progression of their style at that given time... just like christ illusion and world painted blood.

if i were kerry king and i was calling all the shots, (because lets be honest here folks, thats how it is) i would take a good look back at least to seasons or divine intervention, finally forget about these nu-metally riffs and ideas, and get rid of this greg fidelman guy everything he works on sounds bad. not just bad it sounds fucking terrible and thats putting it mildly. he is the modern day enemy of a good rhythm guitar tone and somebody should tell this guy cuz hes gotta be stopped lol.

I will always be a fan and buy the albums, but Slayer has declined a bit since '98 or so. They've pretty much played every metal riff there is. So now there seems to be a bit more filler than I like.

It's not just them. It happens with every band. Repetition is inevitable. Still looking forward to the next album, though.
