SONIC YOUTH Frontman Reportedly Joins Black Metal Supergroup TWILIGHT - Aug. 1, 2012
SONIC YOUTH frontman Thurston Moore has reportedly joined TWILIGHT, the black metal supergroup featuring NACHTMYSTIUM mainman Blake Judd.

TWILIGHT's current lineup is rounded out by THE ATLAS MOTH's Stavros Giannopoulos, producer Sanford Parker, Wrest (a.k.a. Jef Whitehead) from LEVIATHAN and Imperial (a.k.a. Neil Jameson) from KRIEG.

TWILIGHT is scheduled to enter the studio later this month to begin recording a new album for a fall release via Century Media Records.

"I had SONIC YOUTH records when I was 12," Judd told The 1st Five in an interview. "And to now know that, not only am I having a dialogue with this person about anything, but dude's gonna join a band I started, and it's like . . . whoah. Fucking amazing, amazing feeling."

He added, "I've done so much shit, and worked with so many cool people, and I'll get to work with Thurston. You know Century Media could offer us $100,000 to make that TWILIGHT record and say: 'Blake, you get ninety percent of that money but Thurston Moore's not gonna be on the record, or, you can be on it and we'll give you 10 grand and that's what you have to make it work.' And I would, I would take the 10 grand and work with Thurston. That's like how much I love SONIC YOUTH."

it is really fucking annoying how all these indie rockers love black metal now. In the 90's they wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole but now it's cool, or at least has become increasingly viewed as such in the last 7-8 years.

These guys missed the wagon anyway, unless you think watered down shit like Wolves In The Throne is the 'real deal'. If not, the best black metal was made in the 90's, with the exception of 80's Bathory.

How do you know he didn't like Black Metal before now. Black Metal has been around as long as Sonic Youth, it's not a stretch of the imagination to think that Thurston has been aware of Black Metal, or even a fan, all these years.

This guy gets a divorce from his bassist, Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth and has nothing to do. Why not play black metal? He's ass-out anyway!

Like the guy up the page said, it's weird seeing all these hipster-indie guys being into black metal now, seems to be the new thing.

New thing to like? What do any of you know about what Thurston's music collection. He is a musicologist, he knows all genres from softest to roughest.

Some of you wear your music taste as a badge of identity, this guy is living it. Judge your self first for being late to the game.

Correct, sir. Most likely these people knew nothing about Thurston Moore before this article. The man has incredible taste and always has. They should consider doing homework before they bitch.

where he was talking about black metal like it was something new to him. this was back in 2004 i think. He has not been into it since the 80's, no chance.

It's not about wearing taste as a 'badge of identity', it's about talking about how late these

Americans in general got to black metal late. sorry, that's the truth, even of metal fans. By the mid 90's it was all over Europe, whereas it was nothing in the U.S comparatively in terms of status. Most of the zines in the U.S covered death metal, and the big mags like Metal Maniacs were barely touching black metal. By constrast, black metal artists were on the front covers of mags like Terrorizer by 1994/95.

With this in mind, am i really supposed to believe that a guy like Moore, who isn't into metal really, esp when it wasn't trendy in the 90's, was into black metal before almost every other metalhead in the country? It's highly unlikely.

Anyway, the connection between black metal and some indie rock was picked up by Terrorizer journalists all the way back in 1995. There was a huge disconnect between the genres then. It's good that it's over but i do get suspicious of

Who cares when he got into it? It's not like your interest in black metal is only valid if you were in on it since the beginning. I don't think "hipster" and "indie" and "emo" or whatever have anything to do with anything of importance. There are plenty of musicians and bands who have been in on black metal since the '90s who are releasing shit albums anyway. The most important thing is that Twilight and Thurston Moore make some worthwhile music together. And if the album they make is shit, then they right deserve to be called out for it.

at what point did one need to discover black metal to be legitimately interested in it? If he didn't discover black metal until the 2000's is he not allowed to like it? That seems stupid.

I don't really care about whether he likes it or not. My original point was more general. I personally do not like indie kids that shitted on metal in the past and now love it. I just hate posers in general and can spot them a while away.

I don't think Moore is a poser, just a music geek--I love 80s Sonic Youth btw, and some of their 90s albums-- but the trend annoys me, just like any trend really, and I guess deep down I feel that, like death metal, black metal's cultural moment has well since passed, even if there are still good bands around.

I don't doubt that many indie kids knocked metal back in the day, but oh well. We should be happy that they've decided to appreciate metal. That kinda puts some of them in front of the metal crowd, who tend to loathe any kind of progression or open-mindedness in music. I know for a fact that they were rocking Slayer while making the Daydream Nation album. Kim Gordon said as much in the DN liner notes.

Seems quite a stretch to me. I can understand Dave Grohl doing a straight up metal album, but this?

Soon, Eddie Vedder will handle vocal duties for Napalm Death.

Since when does Black Metal need Indie cred? This is some bullshit, now, I'll tell you.

Like when that turd Moby started his metal "Supergroup", and didn't that fuck Ryan Adams try some similar bullshit?

Bullshit. Black Metal sucks anyway. Ridiculous.

Why would anyone WANT to join a black metal band???

Stupid "anti-religious" crap is no different than the religion it criticizes (and I'm an atheist).

And with all the facepaint, these jokers look just as silly as the 80's hair metal bands, if not more so.

Sorry if I'm insulting anyone...just calling it like it is.

I would say that now that he's a single dude, he's probably got his eye on boning a few metal chicks.

He'll also be sad to find out that this species went extinct about 10 years ago. But if he ever considered a steady diet of sausage, he's in the right fucking place.

Black metal is made up of hipsters now? You all know that, by claiming to like black metal before it was cool, that in turn makes you a hipster, right?
