CENTURY MEDIA Artists Back On SPOTIFY - July 30, 2012
Century Media Records and its associated labels InsideOut Music, Superball Music and People Like You Records have announced that their entire repertoire is now available on Spotify.

"Spotify offers great tools to discover new artists. We feel that this is essential for our promising newcomers. In that respect, Spotify gives those artists a very good forum," states Antje Lange, general manager Europe.

After the initial decision to pull the Century Media catalog from Spotify, label execs were impressed by the resulting debate, especially the messages and comments by the thousands of fans who weighed in on the issue. Fan sentiment and continued discussions with Spotify have resulted in the label reversing its initial decision.

"We respect that music fans wanted to have instant access to our catalog via Spotify," states President of North America Don Robertson. "But we also have to consider the rights of our artists. After practicing some due diligence, we're moving ahead confident that both the artist and the fan are being fairly served by this developing platform."

Steve Savoca, Head of Content at Spotify, adds: "Spotify's global growth provides a powerful platform for artists to connect directly with our hugely passionate audience. The return of Century Media's fantastic catalog is cranking metal music to our ears."

Century Media will continue to evaluate Spotify as a music discovery tool and welcome the fan's opportunity to preview a release in its entirety before deciding to buy a copy.

Thomas Waber, President of Superball and InsideOut Music sums it up: "We are looking forward to our fans being able to access our music again through the premium streaming service in the world. Hopefully they will discover great new music as a result!"

It’s coming to Canada too pal…I guess you will need an extra shift at the fast food restaurant you work at to pay for your music.

In other words do the right thing and support the artist.

Is the perfectly evolved tool for the digital/streaming age. Obviously artists will never make what they did 20+ years ago on the physical sale of music ever again, but at least now they can market and expose their music to a wider audience easier and faster while still making money on royalties. And from a users perspective, their is nothing better than having an unlimited selection of songs at your disposal for instant streaming anytime and anywhere in the world without the need to ever download/upload crap.

issue with Spotify is that is SUCKS for labeling the ID tags, and renaming your music, and dealjng with the album cover thumbnails. I'm having a hell of a time sorting the 'Yngwie Malmsteen', 'Yngwie J Malmsteen', and Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force'...It's a fucking disaster.

kill me.

FYI: The average Canadian makes MORE on average than Americans do. Look it up. Better healthcare system, and hey, Hockey.

And I'm American. Love my country. But we're getting passed left and right by other countries that some of you guys think we're better than.

As for Spotify, great idea whose idea is long overdue. I don't download music anymore, I can listen to new music and judge before I buy, and the artists get paid.

Makes sense to me.

Next.

I correct myself...

http://www.complex.com/music/2012/07/new-statistics-show-that-spotify-pays-artists-three-times-more-on-premium-streams

If it makes a differnce i just might pay into it....

Umm.. do your homework people. While it's true that Spotify does pay royalties for the streamed music, on independent labels the amounts are practically next to nothing. Don't be fooled by the Spotify PR and pat yourself in the back for supporting your favorite artists by paying $4.99-$9.99/month for all the music you ever want to hear.

I play in a metal band on an independent label, we're talking about sums less than 0,001 cents per streamed track. Yep, you need thousands of plays to earn a single dollar to share between the band members.

More bands than you think are struggling to make enough money to even afford to go on tour to promote their music. Recording budgets are still based on the expected physical sales of records and merchandise, since money flow from Spotify is too ridicilous to speak of.

Who is dumb enough to pay for Spotify? It's free with very little commercial interruption compared to crappy corporate radio. The selection of music could be better, but it seems to be growing by the month.
