METALLICA Frontman: 'We're Pretty Excited To Get Writing Again' - July 29, 2012
The four members of METALLICA held a press conference yesterday afternoon (Saturday, July 28) prior ot the opening show of their eight-concert run at Palacio de los Deportes (Sports Palace) in Mexico City, Mexico. You can watch video footage of the question-and-answer session below. A few excerpts follow.

On why METALLICA chose to debut its new stage show in Mexico City:

Lars Ulrich (drums): "We have had a longstanding love affair with all things Mexico, starting back in '93 when we came down here and played five shows at the place we're playing tonight, which resulted in the 'Binge & Purge' box set, which was fantastic. We came back in '99 and played at Foro Sol and did another three nights at Foro Sol a couple of years ago. So when we wanted to do the world premiere of this crazy new show, which is the first new show that we've done since we did 'Death Magnetic' four years ago, we couldn't think of a better place to do it than right here in Mexico City. And obviously, also, we have so many friends here, so many fans, a lot of people who come from Latin America and from a lot of different places. So we figured parking ourselves in Mexico City for a couple of weeks and playing all these shows and premiering this stage and kind of getting the Mexican fans to be part of the initiation of this new stage, we couldn't think of a cooler place to do [it in]. And this whole thing, obviously, as some of you know, is the beginning of the METALLICA 3D movie project, and so that's kind of what we're gonna be spending the next six weeks on. So that culminates up in Vancouver at the end of August, where we're gonna be shooting a movie and playing the last couple of concerts."

On METALLICA's plans to enter the studio in September to start putting ideas together for the follow-up to 2008's "Death Magnetic":

James Hetfield (guitar, vocals): "I've been itching to write for a long time — all of us have — so there's lots of ideas. There's been lots of little things that have kind of jumped up and gotten in the way of writing. So we're pretty excited to get writing again. It could go very quick, it could take a long time; we have no idea. That's the beauty of the artform."

Robert Trujillo (bass): "[There are] lots of riffs to jam on, and that's pretty exciting for us. But, like James said, there are a lot of little walls and barriers we've gotta get through, and then we'll be writing like crazy."

On whether METALLICA's collaboration with Lou Reed ("Lulu"), which was recorded in only 10 days, will affect the writing and recording process for the band's next album:

James Hetfield: "I think everything we do affects the next thing somehow. We don't know how that will show up. That is another way of writing. And I think it gave us confidence that we can go in and trust a little more of the moment. There's another side of this that is complete obsessive and perfectionist. So finding a balance is key to doing a METALLICA record."

On how Hollywood has been treating Lars Ulrich following his recent forays into acting — first in the 2010 Russell Brand comedy "Get Him To The Greek" and then again earlier this year in the HBO drama "Hemingway & Gellhorn":

Lars Ulrich: "I think those are two isolated situations. I've always been incredibly interested in film. I've always been incredibly interest in the creative process, whether it's film or music or painting or sculpture or writing, so being around creative people is always fascinating. So when there people call up and say, 'Come and do this for three days,' or 'Come and do this for a couple of weeks,' it kind of perks up my interest. I think the word 'career' is certainly not applicable. I don't have an agent, I don't have anybody. I can tell you that in the wake of the 'Hemingway' movie, [which] was premiered about two months ago, I've gotten this many phone calls [showing a zero sign, using his index finger and thumb] — zero. So there you go; this may be the end of it. But I'm always interested in just different creative outlets and experiences, and as long as they sort of fit in and don't get in the way of anything METALLICA. But film has always been my passion and when I'm not with my family or with METALLICA, I park myself in the film world and I see film and I read about film and I study film. It's always been kind of my great escape. Those were two interesting experiences, but it's not anything that I'm pursuing in relation to a career or any bullshit like that. If I was ever gonna be involved in film, I would probably be more interested in writing or maybe producing. Acting — sitting around in a trailer for eight hours a day for you to get called — it's not exactly my dream gig. But I think writing or producing would be interesting at some point. But acting is not a huge thing."

If Lulu in anyway turns up on this new record, I may actually cry. Still, if its better than DM in any shape or form then I would consider it a success

DM was the best album Metallica made since the Black Album. If they made DM instead of Load, maybe we wouldn't have ended up with the trendy 'Tallica. If they make an album better than Kill Em All, then I'd consider it a success.

We get something that fits in with Load/Reload.

Whether you like the actual makeup of Death Magnetic, it does fit sonically and structurally as the logical followup to the 80s thrash classics.

They've proven they can still do a metal record, I doubt they try to make DMII.

Everyone called them pussies/sellouts for Black Album and Load, but these guys are getting old. I'd be fine with more songs in the vein of Until It Sleeps, Bleeding Me, King Nothing, Hero of the Day, etc.

St Anger, DM and Lulu were definite departures from that sound, maybe it's time to go back.

May you be punched in the face for wanting another "Load" type album. The Load era was the finial nail in the Metallica coffin, now we have Tallica

Did anybody actually expect Lulu to be the new Metallica album? I wish it would've just been released as a Lou Reed project, because I heard a few things off of it that I thought were interesting. Then again I don't hate Lou Reed.

when Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax were the Thrash Metal kings?

Kreator, Testament, Overkill, Death Angel, Sodom and a few others of the so-called "2nd tier" of Thrash Metal bands have caught up and passed the so-called "big 4" and are not looking back. Listen to the latest Kreator, Testament and Overkill releases, and YOU tell me which set of bands are at their apex and what bands are on the down slide.

Yeah, get to writing, Lars..James. You've got plenty of catching up to do.

Next.

The big 4 was never about who was better, thats why it's not called the better 4. The big 4 was coined in terms of sales. Why don't people understand this?

I constantly wonder why the hell they just can't request questions only in English, and definitely without reversed translations. It will save so much time, and they woudn't have to sit and wait and wait.

Death Magnetic was pretty good. The riffs were memorable, and it as thrashy. Hopefully they continue that route

quit pissing around with the little walls and barriors getting in the way and get started on what you do best and that is writing music! there is no reason not to be focusing on music instead of a stupid movie! I am pretty sure if you cared about your fans and asked them if they wanted a movie or music they would choose music! 4 years is long enough between music either make another record or quit.

This band is overrated from the mid-90's to today. Take the first 4 albums out of the equation, and even The Black Album to a lesser extent, and this would just be an average band.

If all they had was Load 1+2, SA, and DM, they wouldn't have the following they have. I'm an 80's thrash fan, I've long since given up on 'Tallica. They're a hard rock band with a metal twist.

I hope that after their (desperate?) attempts to get back in touch with their thrash bredren and its roots, Metallica are able to kick some serious shit again. Death Magnetic was solid, but they were totally over-doing it. It felt like a chore going through that album.

Whatever the new album is, it'll be awesome. They are not sellouts never have been and never will be. To quote Cliff "We're gonna play what we want to play and if people consider that selling out than whatever". Metallica kicks ass!

Why do all these shitty countries always have to ask self centered questions about their shit hole of a country? It seems EVERY interview out of the US always consists of some stupid question about their countries. Get over yourselves, they really dont give a shit about your country its your money they want.

listening to the new Testament or Overkill is not going to make a Metallica album "better".

A lot of factors there beside musicianship: production, songwriting etc.

Next album will slay, I got a feeling....

They're gonna take far too long to put out something that most people are only going to relish trashing here and there.

I'm o.k. with whatever they do. I just want some new material. I hope it sounds a little better than DMag., but who knows. I'll wait and judge it for myself whenever it is released. For some reason, they're still one of the most anticipated bands with new material. Always have been to their fans of the genre(s) they been within. No?

Tell Lars to practice his drums again. And since he is rich and has drum techs and roadies galore, it's ok to play more than a snare, a tom, and a cymbal.

Oh...and also tell Kirk to spend the next 4 or 5 years while waiting on the new album to begin being slapped together to work on a new solo. The same one is getting a little old after 7 albums.

Thanks.

These guys are still some of the most talented musicians on the planet and to some they can do no wrong. My opinion is that considering the name of the band and the type of music it implies they should get to making metal again. What they've been putting out since the black album isn't metal to me. If James doesn't want to scream and the band doesn't want to do the thrash thing anymore then that's fine. But they could stick to writing more songs like Harvester or The Thing That Should Not Be. Slower but crunchy and heavy.....definitely metal. They aren't heavy anymore and haven't been for a long time. For me, Metallica ended in '88 and I'd like to see them get back to writing those style riffs. I mean, these guys could put out an album of pure static/white noise and it would go platinum. They've put out a good handful of songs since then that are alright but they definitely aren't doing what got them the spotlight in the first place. Anyone think they should go back to writing heavier, although maybe slower songs again? Get back to what, at least in my opinion, metal should be?

I'm not sure how DM was really all that good. I listen to my music on shuffle, and every time a DM song comes on, it's like someone destroyed my EQ. The album by itself, once you're used to the mix, might be ok. But shuffled alongside any other metal album from the last five years, and it's awful, it's almost painful.

But what do I know. I'm not an audio engineer. Just someone with ears who likes good music.
