DEFTONES Performs Two New Songs In Hollywood; Video Available - July 29, 2012
DEFTONES played two brand new songs — "Roller Derby" and "Rosemary" — during last night's (Saturday, July 28) concert at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, California. Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be seen below.

"Roller Derby" and "Rosemary" are slated to appear on DEFTONES's seventh album, which is tentatively scheduled for release on October 9. The CD will follow up 2010's "Diamond Eyes", which was the group's most successful and acclaimed outing in years. Lead singer Chino Moreno told Billboard.com why the band got back to work faster than usual. "It was important that we wanted to not drag it out," he said. "We have a well-documented history of taking forever to make records. But with our last record, we did it in a really short, good amount of time, probably four or five months from the time we started writing until we finished it. For us, that was record time, so this time the idea was, 'Let's go in and start a record on this date and let's try to be finished by summertime and keep this work ethic we kind of stumbled upon on the last one,' and we did."

DEFTONES worked again with producer Nick Raskulinecz, who produced "Diamond Eyes" and has also worked on albums by RUSH and FOO FIGHTERS.

Asked how the new DEFTONES disc sounds, Moreno told Billboard.com, "It's not a super fast or slow record. It's very dynamic. Some of my favorite things about DEFTONES are the dynamics. Yes, we're a heavy band, but we're not just in-your-face aggro the whole time, punching you in the face. There's a lot of aggression in some of the music, but there's also this very soothing element where there's a lot of soundscapes rather than attack, attack, attack the whole time. I understand that's a big part of our sound, but I really feel like we reached a peak on our dynamics on this record with those two qualities — the beauty of something and just straight, ruthless aggression."

The group also intends to continue their tradition of recording several cover tunes that could end up as B-sides, with Moreno revealing that they've been toying with songs from ELVIS PRESLEY and EARTH, WIND & FIRE, among others.

DEFTONES will promote the new CD's upcoming release with a string of tour dates with SYSTEM OF A DOWN, beginning on August 2 in Camden, New Jersey.

"Diamond Eyes" debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard album chart when it came out, making it the band's highest charting effort since 2003's "Deftones".

"Diamond Eyes" featured two Top 20 rock hits in the title track and "You've Seen The Butcher".

The album was written and recorded after the late 2008 auto accident that left bassist Chi Cheng in a semi-comatose state. An album completed before Cheng's accident, titled "Eros", remains unreleased.

Cheng remains in a semi-comatose state although he has been showing gradual signs of consciousness and recovery for the past year. His replacement on "Diamond Eyes", Sergio Vega, also plays on the new DEFTONES disc.

I like some early deft ones material.madrenaline is the shit..around the fur was great..but seems the band has gone into a more experimental mode since then with only a handful of songs I like. I am a bit tired of the whiny sound off chinos voice...will probably pass on the new one as I really doubt they will be much different than diamond eyes which other than a few songs bores me

You obviously didn't watch the video above for Roller Derby. Not 'experimental' at all - quite in line with the first couple albums.

Let's all repeat metalimpression and other 'true' metal head's code of conduct: "It's only cool to like obscure bands that no one has heard of (that usually suck) or certain mainstream bands but ONLY before they became too popular."

A true metal head always has to affirm they have deeper and more sophisticated tastes in the genre. For the rest of us who have grown up and don't need to prove anything, we can appreciate bands evolving and realize that there are reasons why 'underground' bands never make it.

You have two kind of bands in this world. The ones that stay the same for years, and the ones who make a change.
I actually praise this band for making a change and staying true to themselves after 24 years. And keep going even after the basist practically died on them (unlike Slipknot, who are practically loosing it).
I like these new songs, will be looking forward to the new one.

I agree; sometimes, Chino sounds off-key and whines it kept me for many years off the band, but Diamond Eyes is a great album, and this one looks very promising too

And also rosemary is turning out to be one of the best deftones tracks I've heard in a long time , such a creative song , even the breakdown in the end is solid for deftones status.

I just got my new Deftones shirt with the old logo in cursive and the cat in the background and it had "adrenaline" on the bottom...love this band and have ever since '97 when I decided to test out Around the Fur @ the local Tower Records in Las Vegas...was blown away and still am...if there's such thing as perfection, Deftones are the closest thing to it for me. Then new songs sound fantastic
