TOOL Drummer Offers Yet Another Vague Update On New Record - July 27, 2012
According to The Pulse Of Radio, TOOL drummer Danny Carey offered a brief update on the progress of the band's fifth studio album in an interview with the "Children Of Saturn" radio show last week. Carey explained, "The TOOL thing is happening. Me, Adam [Jones, guitar] and Justin [Chancellor, bass] are banging away. Trying to get enough [material] to get Maynard [James Keenan, vocals] in there, but there is no wine before it's time."

Keenan, who's also been busy with side projects A PERFECT CIRCLE and PUSCIFER in recent years — not to mention his vineyards — explained in an interview last year how TOOL's writing process worked, saying, "They write forever and then we go in and knock it out. We're writing. We're writing vocals, but nothing's solid."

As of yet the band has not begun any recording for the project, which will follow up 2006's "10,000 Days".

TOOL remains as popular as ever on the road even though it's been six years between albums, but Keenan told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that he's never taken the band's audience for granted. "Oh, you can't ever assume that," he said. "You just have to do what feels right for you, and take the time you need and just follow your heart. And if people ended up coming around for it, great, if they didn't, then that's fine too. You can't base your life around whether people are gonna show up or not."

The band did a short tour earlier this year, although it did not unveil any new material.

Carey said at a School Of Rock event in Los Angeles this past May that the band had "the framework of at least five good songs" prepared.

Give "hooker with a penis" a listen from Aenima. "I sold out before you ever heard my name" great tune. Not ironic either.

LOL. That's Maynard's sense of humor (and maybe some Anger?) right there. Love this band. I'll be a first day buyer whenever they decide to release the new one.

That is abject stupidity. There is nothing cooler than taking your entire record collection with you in the car. And my trusty old 30 gig ipod (no need for video or apps) OWNS any radio station. Plus, not having your car littered with with scratched up or heat warped cd's that don't play anymore is a major bonus.

for 5+ years in between albums because everything they put out is a gem. At least they don't put out half ass albums every 2 years. And that's not to say that all bands that do the 2 years cycle do that. That's to say that a masterpiece isn't sculpted, painted or written in one day or in this case, 2 years.

I think Tool is a solid band that has three or four really excellent tracks per album, but they make themselves so scarce that people savor every second of the record, and refuse to acknowledge that most of the tracks are average, or throwaways.

Having three or four really excellent tracks per album makes them a good band, but their strategy of hiding themselves away causes them to be WAY overrated, which annoys me.

BTW, "Parabola" is the best Tool song ever.

This is the truest statement out of all of these. Actually, I think 3-4 is a bit generous, but I understand. I think I could fill up a CDR with songs of theirs that are good.
Maybe?
I think they are completely talented, as musicians, but they just don't rock....
They are one of those bands that no one really wants to argue about, though, which is to say, no one wants to admit the not rocking part.
And I am a patient listener, I enjoy alot of really spacious music. They just, there is just something about them that is really uninteresting, alot in fact.

The last good album they put out was Aenima. Every other album is just long drawn out jam songs with sparse vocals over the top since they write everything before Meynard even shows up.

7+ years between albums is fucking ridiculous. There, I said it.

Maynard is going to be on the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast today (Friday, July 27th 2012) and it should be awesome. Unlike other interviews, he will sit down for 2+ hours and get deeply philosophical with Joe Rogan. It is going to be epic!

Tool is a great band, and like a poster above, I don't mind the 7 years or so in between records. Tool isn't one of my top 5 bands, but they do make epic music. Every chord, beat, and syllable has an intense amount of thought put into it, not to mention the live act. That's what makes them Tool. A Tool record every 2 to 3 years just wouldn't sound right.

Tool stays relevant by touring pretty much every year. I don't understand why but they manage to draw a crowd still.

The shows were great but they are becoming more and more redundant and the set seems short due to the 30-40 min spaced out jamming and the audience gets left with about 6-8 actual songs. Not worth the $100 price of admission if you ask me.

The material post aenima is okay but nothing to phenomenal. Without the visuals the songs are sub-par at best. Oh, and the singer is a total "TOOL," who needs to get over himself, grow up and accept his audience instead of acting like a shy lil child. Don't know how this guy survived in the military.
