No New METALLICA Album Before 2014 At The Earliest, Says LARS ULRICH - July 27, 2012
On Wednesday, July 25, Todd Hancock of the Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada radio station 99.3 The Fox conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich. You can now listen to the entire 20-minute chat using the SoundCloud player below.

When asked how close METALLICA fans are to seeing a new studio album from the band, Ulrich said, "I wouldn't use the word 'close.' I mean, obviously, in the context of, say, the age of planet Earth, we're pretty close. But in the context of, say, other things, there may be one or two football seasons, or one or two baseball seasons, or one or two hockey seasons… We've gotta do this movie, and we're gonna get back to writing when we've done this movie. I would say late '13 or early '14. It's difficult to imagine… I think even late '13 may be a bit optimistic. I would say hopefully we can realistically get a record out probably about a year and half from now, so maybe early '14."

METALLICA's 3D movie begins filming later this summer and will mix concert footage with a storyline.

The band is financing the project itself and has hired "Predators" director Nimród Antal to get behind the camera. Antal will film METALLICA's August 24-25 concerts at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada for use in the movie. "The rest of the film will be shot the next two or three weeks after the shows in Vancouver, into the middle to the third week of September," Ulrich said.

The Vancouver show will feature a brand new 140-foot-by-50-foot stage that will include what a post at the band's web site called "colossal components and striking visual elements spanning METALLICA's entire 30-year career."

When asked if METALLICA's movie will contain any "The Song Remains The Same"-style fantasy sequences from the group, Ulrich told Billboard.com, "Yeah, I've got my horse and my sword and my battle armor. Not quite that, but the are stranger references than 'The Song Remains The Same'. I certainly don't mean to be disrespectful in that way; I have nothing but love for LED ZEPPELIN and 'The Song Remains The Same'. [The film] is a narrative, and the rest of the stuff that goes on outside of the concert is not going to feature members of METALLICA... in any way, shape or form. It's a split narrative that kind of runs parallel to the concert."

If you are going to put out crap like SA and DM, then I don't want to hear it. And yes kids, they are both horrible albums. Just heavy for the sake of being heavy with ZERO creativity.

You can express your opinion, jerk-off, just like the rest of the dipshit retards on here that think they no better than others, but don't think your view (however arrogant) is any better just because you think it is.

So stop sounding so pathetic. Don't think a band is any good? It just shows how desperate your need for attention is if you still post on their article.

.....and FYI, there are still a lot of us out there that find SA and DM killer albums. So fuck off.

Yeah, you don't want rush anything now like you used to release something every 1 to 2 years.

Kill 'Em All (1983)
Ride the Lightning (1984)
Master of Puppets (1986)
...And Justice for All (1988)

Take your take and make these great masterpieces.

Metallica (1991)
Load (1996)
ReLoad (1997)
St. Anger (2003)
Death Magnetic (2008)

Megadeth has never softened up or changed their sound either. Dave has stayed true though man, you gotta see that right? I mean, whether you like them or not they've stayed the course and stayed true to thrash and heavy music. Don't get me wrong, Metallica has put out a couple of gems since the Black Album but that album was truly the end of it for me. Justice is my favorite and that was the last of the true old school Metallica.

You and the others calling those 2 albums killer makes all of you the retards. You may have your opinions. I provide facts. For the record junior... I like the first 3 albums. Metallica were a good band, but they lost their creativity. James Hetfield was an awesome writer and still could be. Do I think they could write a great album again....YES. But DM and SA are shit.

Personally, while I wasn't a big fan of SA, DM was essentially the Metallica album I had been waiting for. If you feel differently, then fine. Try not to be an egotistical bigot next time, brohan.

Metallica is no Black Country Communion who, A. are much better and B. aside from punk bands, are probably the only rock band that puts out an album just about every year like they did in the good old days. Sloth is one of the 7 deadly sins... let's get to work ladies!

black country makes records at that pace because they need the cash. They can't afford to be like Metallica and take a hiatus. At least Metallica takes their time (for better or worse) to do an album they can get behind of in terms of artistry (wait for the time to get inspired and whatnot) instead of rushing a bunch of recycled material, paying a producer to polish it, releasing it and calling it an album (which they have been guilty of as well with Reload, but nonetheless... hope you catch my drift)

I am not going to waste money on going to a theater to see it and I do not have the tv to watch it. what happened to the good old days when bands put out 2 records a year and somehow manged to find time to tour? now you have to wait years to get new music because they are to busy with other projects that their real fans who made them do not care about.

Who in their right mind would think St Anger is a killer album?

St Anger was awful.
Death Magnetic was decent at best, apart from that middle section in Suicide and Redemption which is total vintage Metallica.
Beyond Magnectic was terrible.

How could his voice get worse? He took lessons to sing without damaging his pipes, that's why he sounds like Pat Boone. With his vocal style of the past 15-20 years he can keep on like that till his nineties.

It's gonna be mid-to-late 2014 because they have a motherload of James' random riffs to go through and try to figure out which ones to pick and connect with Pro Tools - all that to make songs of 8-9 minutes consisting of pointless riffs. Rick's random peeks through the studio door are not helping the situation.

Metallica should make the next album from scratch - find some good riff and work on that, together. One song at a time until each of them is about 3-5 minutes long and until they have 40-45 minutes of music. The music has to fit on ONE FUCKING 12" VINYL.

OK, yes Death Magnetic was the best thing since And Justice...

And a moldy hunk of cheese is also better than a maggot-ridden hunk.

Personally, either aren't all that great. Especially compared to what has Come out in the years since Metallica was metal. Face it guys, Metallica cannot compete in today's world of more hungry metal artists.

They had their moments, but sadly they are pretty much over. Hence, getting Lou Reed.

Fight boredom with boredom.

"OK, yes Death Magnetic was the best thing since And Justice..." Dude come on. As much as a commercial album The Black Album was it's still 1000 times better than that boring, mediocre Death Magnetic horseshit .

I was sniffing through the music store the other day. I picked up Lulu and the 4 song death magnetic thing.....as I was walking to the counter I said to myself, "are you kidding?" I put them down and walked out. Metallica Fan (1984-1990).

Oh...and I also meant to say...when Lars says no new album before 2014, what he's actually meaning is, they won't begin trying to decipher all of James' 751 riffs until then. But once they do, they will slap something together pretty quick for the profits...oops, I mean the fans.

I don't care about any of their new albums frankly speaking. I think people go to their concerts simply because they want to hear the classics. Seriously, who cares about the last few records?

This band was at their peak when they were releasing a new album every one to two years back in the 80's and right up to the Black Album.

After 'The Black Album' they've taken longer and longer to release new material and they have yet to release anything as strong as what they released from 1983 to 1991.

In 8 years Metallica released: Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, Garage Days Re-Revisited, ...And Justice for All & The Black Album.

In the last 16 years Metallica has released: Load, Re-Load, Garage Inc., S&M, St. Anger, Death Magnetic & LuLu.

To say these guys haven't been focused on writing and recording great music since all of the 'Black Album' cash started rolling in would be the biggest understatement.

Even after losing Cliff Burton in 1986 they didn't take a long period of time to release new music. They released Garage Days in 1987 and then in 1988 they released ...And Justice For All. It's already been 4 years since Death Magnetic and now we have to wait another 2 years??

These guys should've used the buzz of the Big 4 shows to get an old-school thrash album out. The Big 4 buzz is already pretty much over and will be forgotten about 2 years from now. they missed a great opportunity.

I prefer bands that take time to release good albums with no fillers.
And not the bands with contracts that make pression to make one album every two years .. with two good songs and the rest all filler shit

death magnetic is ok... is the bastard son of "...and justice for all"

Hey Lars, your idols Saxon and Motorhead crank out killer albums every two years, why can't you?? Maybe you need to go live on the streets again to realize that music comes from angst, which apparently you guys don't have any more. Listen to your fans, just release a thrash album to show the world you still can. And maybe just maybe you guys could put an album out with some bass in it?? Would that be too much to ask?? Cliff(RIP, I love Cliff but still) is dead get over it. I agree with the fans that say give it up, although that beyond magnetic EP is the best stuff you've done in a while. Did you guys forget where your roots came from NWOBHM!!!!!!!!!!! Go put on your Weapon EP Lars!!!!

Remember...Lars says he doesn't practice his drums. Can't wait for the 2014 album!! Maybe he'll get Lou Reed to push his kick drum beater for him.

A friend and I had a discussion about if Cliff had never passed, what path Metallica would have taken. Specifically I thought the Black Album idea would have broken the band up with James and Cliff going one way, and Kirk and Lars going another. Either that or just Cliff leaving. We would have likely gotten a couple more killer records after Puppets though, before the dam broke.

The reason it takes so long b/w albums is that they are touring the fucking earth. They didn't have this enormous fanbase back in the 80s so they could record albums more frequently.

Also, they have families that they want to spend time with.

I love Metallica, but this irritates the hell out of me. Every week, we get a story or two about how many riffs they have accumulated, but it still takes them forever to put out 10 songs. It's obvious how hard it is for them to put an album together, like their hearts really aren't in it anymore. Keep giving me a new Megadeth album every 2-2 1/2 years!!
