ACE FREHLEY Is 'Happier' Being A Solo Artist Than He Was Touring With KISS - July 26, 2012
In a brand new interview with The Oakland Press, original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley revealed that he prefers recording and touring as a solo artist over being in the band.

"I like running my own life now," Frehley said. "One of the things that made me crazy when I was in KISS was being at the mercy of Paul [Stanley] and Gene [Simmons], who were like workaholic. They wanted to tour constantly and record constantly, over-merchandise the brand, and that made me crazy."

He added, "I'm not a kid any more. Touring constantly can be very exhausting. I don't want to put myself in that position, so I'm happier with what I'm doing now."

Frehley is working on several new projects, including a new solo album, a possible acoustic CD, the score to a science fiction movie and a sequel to his 2011 autobiography, "No Regrets". The guitarist said that he might also celebrate the 35th anniversary of his self-titled first solo album, which went platinum, by performing the album in its entirety next year.

"Writing ['No Regrets'] opened the floodgates and put me in contact with a lot of people I haven't spoken to in a while," Frehley said. "A lot of stories came up I had forgotten about, and there were a lot of stories I came across too late. I've spoken with a couple of my old bodyguards, roadies and stuff; they helped me with the first book and they're helping with stories for the second book, too.

"I'm having more fun now than I was way back then because now, in a sober state, I remember what I do. That's a nice feeling, to wake up the following day and remember what you did the day before. It wasn't like that for a long time."

Read more from The Oakland Press.

Fan-filmed video footage of Ace Frehley's July 13 concert at at Jackson County Fairgrounds in Jackson, Michigan can be seen below.

that's a great idea! if they both sing on every other song! as long as peter does songs like Baby Driver, Dirty Livin', etc.
Somebody needs to put that in Ace's ear!

So many metal fans today counting album sales as some kind of debate point.
Any honest metal head with ears knows Ace's Anomaly blew that crappy Sonic Boom out of the water. Sounded like a kiddie album.
Bottom line with Ace and Peter they sell out 4 nights at the Garden and then less than 6 months later another one at the Nassau coliseum and one at the Meadowlands.
Today with the 2 impostors (forget about the make-up,they copy ace and peters solos! they are 70% selling sheds with a opening act that is bigger than they are the last 3 years.
Now all the little kiss fans can wave their starchild pom poms all they like. Everything I jus said is a fact.
Get passed record sales or go watch American Idol. Anomaly is a very cool record.

Is also shaping up to be THE BOMB! Can't understand why triple digit tickets are not being scooped up by the public to see 2 ancient bands perform 12 song sets featuring material that has an average age of 30.

Kiss 2012 = washed up, Stanley can't sing anymore, sick of the 2 scabs, same goddamn set list for 15 years, never play their real gems. I don't care how many bombs they use, it ain't gonna make it any better. Seen Kiss a dozen times, great show if you never saw it, but not interesting anymore for the real Kiss fan.

Ace = washed up, but Ace is real, and has more style in the tip of his alcohol soaked dick than Thayer, whose band, Black and Blue SUCKED. Bunch of hair glam posers with terrible vocals and generic power chords. And please...those who say Ace and Peter should play together....are you kidding me? Peter Criss is BEYOND washed up and played like my grandmother on the 1998 and phony farewell tour, he can't play anymore, pure and simple. There's a reason even Ace doesn't want to play with him. The guy that plays on Ace's Anomaly track "Sister" puts him and Singer to shame.

in fairness, its 2012. It has to end at some point, for all of these bands. People are going for nostalgia and to see their "heros", KiSS serves it up fairly decent, but its not 1976. I'm a huge Stones fan, old Aerosmith, etc, its not the same anymore. They have a shelf life...

Criss played like your grandmother because he's, what, 67? He elderly! what are we talking about. They are old men. Stanley has held father time better than most, but they are human. They can't keep doing it. It helps them that they have imposters that are younger, but...and yes, I'll take a balding, heavy, aged Ace, over someone playing his riffs. THey are HIS riffs!

Why haven't Ace and Peter recruited two young guys on YouTube and gone out and done their own version? They could call it whatever and then play KISS tunes and throw some solo and covers in. I'd bet they wouldn't charge $1500 for a M&G, either.

"Ace had the only solo album of the four that i bought."

Yup, not only was Ace's 1978 solo album a great rock from front to end, rivalling or exceeding Kiss' best efforts with even better musicianship, the other 3 solo albums SUCKED SO HARD IT'S HILARIOUS. Peter Criss' album was so bad we would laugh at it as kids. Ace's 1978 solo album was a HUGE ego blow to Witz ans Eisen.

Maybe Ace should put out a 10-foot $4500 book called "Space" as a sign of appreciation to the fans.

I always felt that Ace was the heart and soul of Kiss too. You could really tell what his contributions to the music was and that is the mark of someone who has a unique style. Sure, there are better guitarists out there who could run circles around him on the fret board but you know what? George Harrison wasn't that great a lead guitarist either but the Beatles sound wouldn't have been what it was with someone else.

Sorry ... part 2: Warning: typing this on an iPhone can cause you to hit the comment button earlier than desired.

You get the impression Paul maybe jealous and irritated by Ace and just wishes he would go away, and he won't, yet he is more than happy to paint a portrait of him! Think about it, KISS release an album, and there is on TV getting interviewed, or in a dunkin donuts commercial, or with an album debuting in the top 40.

I tend to agree Ace should have hung in there with in the 80's. I tend to think he was easily distracted, a little naive, and not as committed as he could have been. It seems they could let Peter go, however Ace was are far too important to let go - Ace had to let himself go.

you said
ace never cared about the money or fame ???

um did you forget what happened during the unplugged era ??

ace nearly didnt show up due to $$$$ issues, he never attended the sound check and it wasnt until 2 hours before the show that anyone knew he was coming.
same as during the reunion tour. ace and peter would constantly complain about $$$$ issue

and did you forget about the PC album as well, aces lawyer kept getting involved about the royalties ace would be paid....

i think you should think before you speak !!!
