METALLICA To 'Concentrate On New Music' Starting In September - July 26, 2012
METALLICA is scheduled to enter the studio in September to begin work on its next full-length album, tentatively due in 2013. The CD will once again be helmed by producer Rick Rubin, who worked on 2008's "Death Magnetic".

METALLICA's drummer, Lars Ulrich, took part in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday (July 24) to promote the band's headlining appearance at the 2012 edition of Outside Lands festival, and he revealed that will be no shortage of material when studio album number 10 does get underway. He explained, "Every time [METALLICA frontman] James Hetfield picks up a guitar, there are some brilliant riffs that come out of it, and I try to make sure that they are all recorded and try to do my best to keep up with them and try to put some drums in behind them. So there are, obviously, tons of ideas sitting around waiting to be had at in terms of turning ideas of James' into songs. Pretty much when we're done with the [3D] movie [project] and with Outside Lands, which should all be wrapped up by early September, we're gonna basically just concentrate on new music and try to get another METALLICA record [done] will be the priority. I mean, it's an amazing thing, 31 years into a career, to be able to be as busy as we are and for people to give a shit."

Hetfield himself told The Pulse Of Radio that he's always working on music. "I can't turn off the creative part of me, which is — what a great gift," he said. "There's stuff coming out all the time, whether it's in the tuning room, in my hotel room, sitting at home with the acoustic, wherever. The stuff is coming out, and it gets recorded or written down or something, some way, and it'll come out at some point. Whether it's on this album, the next album, who knows."

"Death Magnetic" was METALLICA's last under its contract with Warner Music Group — where the band has been making records since 1984.

Hetfield told The Pulse Of Radio about the end of the band's contract with Warner, "It's kind of a good feeling to feel that you're free from any piece of paper that binds you to something. But over our career, we've learned a lot about record companies, the goods and evils of the business and this and that, and we're not very focused on that right now. It is what it is, and when it becomes time for us to either renegotiate or shop around or do things ourselves or something like that, we don't know. There's nothing but options, which is great."

METALLICA's 3D movie begins filming later this summer and will mix concert footage with a storyline.

The band is financing the project itself and has hired "Predators" director Nimród Antal to get behind the camera. Antal will film METALLICA's August 24 concert in Vancouver, Canada for use in the movie.

The show will feature a brand new 140-foot-by-50-foot stage that will include what a post at the band's web site called "colossal components and striking visual elements spanning METALLICA's entire 30-year career."

If you didn't like "My Apocalypse", "That was just your life" or "All Nightmare Long", there's something wrong w/ you.

Either that, or you're just purposely being a "I hate Metallica" snob, and not actually listening to the music.

the whole album sucked, and sucked hard. a bunch of dumbed-down (and badly played, I might add) AJFA-wannabe riffs don't add up to listenable, let alone great.

It was in fact a step in the right direction. Hopefully, it won't be another CLIP CLIP CLIP festival like DM; Lars defended it so much that I'm afraid it turns out the same way.

I agree it is a step in the right direction, but 20 FUCKING YEARS to realize that is too much, isn?t it? It is a good album with plenty of fillers, and BM is good too. We will see with the new one.

BUT the problem with them is that ATTEMPTING to recreate the good times and, after 20 YEARS, that is hard to believe. To many of us, this band has lost credibility, THAT is their problem.

The guy remains a Grade A Riffmeister: like Tony Iommi's spiritual son of the killer riff. Looking forward to the new album. Lots of people have bitched that Rick Rubin wrecked 'Death Magnetic', but I don't think so. I just hope they don't downtune for the next record. I dug that 'D.M.' was in a major key tuning: James' riffs sound more menacing and have more bite when it's a major key tuning. Otherwise, downtuned, he sounds almost too bluesy. At any rate, cool news that they're recording soon. Sweet.

Death Magnetic was a masterpiece with no weak moments and some of their best material to date. It would have been even better with some kick ass bass, but it was a masterpiece nonetheless. Put that Lulu abortion in the rearview, eliminate the distractions, remember the things that you did that got you to the dance, make full use of that incredible bass player, and get back to doing what you have always done better than anyone.

Metallica cannot write songs anymore. All they do is log clips of riffs into a computer. Then they listen back, pick the ones they like and cram the riffs together and try to call it a song. All of the new material has this disjointed feeling. They do not feel like songs anymore. James just say recently that he has 2000 riffs or something for the next album? How about songs James? Take us on a ride like your songs used to, not this herky jerky riff splicing and dicing nonsense.

You actually did write some great riffs for Death Magnetic. Problem is, though, that several good riffs don't automatically make a good SONG.

Maybe you should stop writing riffs on the toilet, in the tour bus, while jerking off, and so on, and instead get the band together and write SONGS. Sit down, take your time, and really COMPOSE a song from start to finish. Think about song dynamics, think about what fits the mood of the song, think about what kind of riff complements the riff you've just pinned down. Maybe, just maybe, you still have it in you to write a goddamn timeless Metal anthem like One, Master of Puppets, or Creeping Death.

Death Magnetic was a step back to the METAL rawness that made your band great. But the songs were just riffs randomly put together. Now if you concentrated on writing SONGS instead of writing a shit pile of single riffs, well, you never know... you might just end up writing the first REAL Metallica record in decades.

I don't expect you to do so but, well, I'm also not 100% sure that you CAN'T do it anymore....

I'm just glad to see them back in form. Usually once bands loose their fire it's gone forever and somehow they seem to have it back. Have a look at any gig they've done in the last couple of years and see how much better live they've been than the whole 'rock' era pretty much. They don't seem out of ideas like they did, have attempted to write a metal album and I think with DM behind them the next one will be better. I remember Dave Mustaine saying 'you can't just go from rock straight back to metal, it takes a couple of albums to get back in the zone'.

As Towelie commented above, their problem is that they record every single riff James writes and then resort to listening to all of them and cramming them together. Songwriting doesn't work that way.

They used to pick one or two great riffs and write a song around that and see where that riff took them emotionally. That's what they need to do now.

There's no coherence to their songs as of late. Any great riffs that they have written is overshadowed by the poor choice of the one that comes after; this makes a bad structured song.

Instead of trying to write 10-12 ProTool-ed, stitched up songs for the CD, they should stick to the old 80s standard, only 8. An LP could only hold about 8 songs and this forced bands to write as much great music as possible to get out to the fans.

Rick Ruben is a horrible producer. He made the volume way too loud on all of the songs. Put the songs from "Death Magnetic" on your iPod and listen to one song and then listen to a song from any other band. If you listen to the song from the "Death Magnetic" CD second, your ears will explode.
