PEARL JAM Guitarist Finds Singer For Unfinished MAD SEASON Tracks - July 25, 2012
The Pulse Of Radio reports that PEARL JAM guitarist Mike McCready has found a singer to record the vocals for roughly an album's worth of unfinished songs by MAD SEASON, the mid-'90s Seattle supergroup featuring McCready, ALICE IN CHAINS frontman Layne Staley and SCREAMING TREES drummer Barrett Martin. According to Guerilla Candy, that vocalist is Mark Lanegan, who was the singer for the TREES and has also spent time with QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. It is not clear whether Lanegan will record vocals for all the songs or if McCready will bring in other guest vocalists as well.

Martin himself broke the news. Lanegan co-wrote two songs on MAD SEASON's only album, "Above", and contributed vocals to a track called "Long Gone Day".

McCready said a few months back that MAD SEASON could be making a semi-return later this year. He plans to reissue "Above", and also revealed the existence of the unreleased material, which was demoed but never completed.

MAD SEASON's sole album, "Above", was certified gold for sales of half a million copies and yielded two Top 20 modern rock singles, "River Of Deceit" and "I Don't Know Anything".

The group officially dissolved in 1999 following the death of bassist John Baker Saunders. Staley died three years later in 2002.

From one point, Mad Season can't be without Layne.
From another point, Lanegan is the perfect choice for this one...

Will be interesting..
Looking forward to it..

GOOD POINTS. BUT I ALWAYS PREFERRED MARK AND SCREAMING TREES OVER LAYNE AND AIC. SO, THIS IS EXCITING NEWS TO ME. I THINK THIS WILL ALL FIT TOGETHER JUST NICELY.

Lanegan sang on at least one Mad Season track anyway, right? He's got an awesome voice, very suited to Mad Season's kind of downer music. Should be good.

....but I would have picked Dax Riggs. He's got a very similar tone to Layne, as well as a darkness about him, also similar to Layne.

Bassist John Baker Saunders is also dead. Maybe Lanegan can play bass.

Mixed feelings about this.

Alice in Chains....it was different because it was Jerry, Sean and Mike Inez's main band and was a big bread maker. But this is a side project and doesn't have to be done. McCready has Pearl Jam and a few other side projects.

But, if there is songs already demoed and recorded.....it would be stupid to not do anything with them. Plus Mark L. is a good candidate to do this. Guy had his battle with drugs, plus he is from the grunge scene and not some 20 year old Johnny Come Lately looking to make a name for himself.

this is also one of those things where McCready is not trying to revive the band....it seems to be that a few tracks were left over and why not put them out

the songs were not finished for a reason so why do it now? the singer and bassist died that's have the band just let it die already.

I'm perfectly fine with Will DuVall in Alice In Chains. I saw him sing many times in Jerry's solo band, mostly singing Jerry's songs, and it was a slow, classy transition getting him involved ultimately with Alice. It has been a fitting combo of a tribute and a transition so far and I think it's been a great thing for the band and their legacy.

This, I'm not so cool with. Those Mad Season songs from "Above" were very obviously from Layne's heart and Layne's struggles, and it's just weird to all of a sudden nearly 20 years later slap somebody on some tracks to complete some songs.

Tour first. Call it something else and play old Mad Season stuff as part of the set. I like Mike McCready but he was hardly the "Jerry Cantrell" of Mad Season with a right to carry on this way.

Mad Season was Layne. Sure the songs were fantastic and McCready is a super guitar player/writer but the album/band was great because of Layne's voice. His voice on that album was dominant, even much more so than any AIC album. McCready can do whatever he wants with the other Mad Season stuff but I don't think he'll capture anything close to what they captured with Layne. I hope he proves me wrong.

Above was a great and truly under-rated album that still enjoys regular rotation from myself. I'd be cautiously optimistic about hearing new tunes. At least with Lanegan in tow, it has the potential to be legit.

The music industry will forever have a void to fill, RIP Layne. Lanegan is going to bring it though; There isn't a bad Screaming Trees album and all is solo stuff is solid as well. Look froward to this!

Alice in Chains moved on without Layne and made an incredible album and proved to a lot of people that they could honor Layne's memory by staying active. I don't think a band should stop if a member dies, mostly because I don't think the deceased would want or expect that. However, there are special cases and I think this is one of them.

I love the Mad Season album, and I think in a way it acted as a tribute album once Layne passed away, like Temple of the Dog was for Andy Wood, but intentionally. Mike has PJ already and I just feel like Mad Season should remain a standalone project. This seems forced to me; he could take the demos and use them for a solo project if he felt so strongly about making new music with the unfinished MS tracks.

Bullshit! Mad Season can be without the dead junkie just as Alice in Chains can, and be successful in doing so to! Stop living in the past!

Blabbermouth sure are good at failing at headlines.

"Finds Singer" should read "Recruits Mark Lanegan".

WTF?

Now that I know that, I'm totally supportive of this. "Long Gone Day" kicked ass and he was one of Layne's best friends.

No Layne, no Mad Season! Jk. I preferred AIC but I still have the Mad Season cd. The 2 hits I remember but haven't listened to the whole cd in years. I will have to do that.

If the songs were already demoed back when Layne was still alive, wouldn't recordings of Layne's vocal tracks exist?

If so, why not just master and use those vocal tracks?

Anyway, I'm cool with Mark Lanegan taking over. He's got some history with the band and he's a well known guy from the 90's Seattle scene. He fits perfectly.

Vocal tracks and lyrics could be unfinished, there could be hickups, poor sound quality (you're not going to remaster Burzum demos into The Black Album). Songs could have changed, tempos inaccurate, etc.

Also, Layne was pretty fucked up from all the drugs those final years. Might as well never heard those tracks.

Layne never demoed the tracks. I am thrilled Mark is going to be the singer. I hope they actually tour.

Mark Lanegan's new cd is fucking awesome. Saw the tour too. One of the most underrated singers out there
