Original KINGDOM COME Lineup To Reunite For Album, Tour? - July 23, 2012
Argentinean rock journalist Lucas H. Gordon, who currently resides in Hollywood, California, recently conducted an interview with former KINGDOM COME/WARRANT guitarist Rick Steier. You can now watch the chat below.

Speaking about the Lenny Wolf-fronted band whose 1988 self-titled debut album was certifield gold in the U.S. for sales in excess of 500,000 copies, Steier said, "I don't know if you've heard. The buzz is that KINGDOM COME is getting back together for a reunion tour… They want the original members. Derek Shulman, who worked for PolyGram and actually signed KINGDOM COME back in the '80s, I think probably James [Kottak; former KINGDOM COME and current SCORPIONS drummer] ran into him on the road, 'cause James does the most travelling, being with the SCORPIONS. So he talked with Derek and had thrown around the idea and then Lenny got on board and said, 'It's great,' and they e-mailed me and blah blah blah. So it's in the works. If it happens, it happens. It's be fun. But if it doesn't, life goes on, right?!"

He continued, "I just ran into J.B. [Johnny B. Frank], the [original KINGDOM COME] bass player. We were at the SCORPIONS show together. It was at the Staples Center. So I ran into him. I hadn't seen him in awhile.

"So we have the nucleus [of the original KINGDOM COME lineup for a potential reunion]. [But] nobody's been able to talk to DannyDanny Stag was the lead guitarist at the time.

"They're kind of making all the connections. I'm kind of sitting back and waiting. I think [Danny] is somewhere back where he grew up in Pittsburgh. I don't know if they've been able to get hold of him. I'm just kind of staying off to the side waiting for the word.

"What [the reunion] would entail would be doing a whole new CD featuring the original guys. And who knows?! I don't know if it would do well here, based on the musical climate here, but in Europe I think they're still into that metal sound."

The original KINGDOM COME lineup recorded and released two albums — 1988's "Kingdom Come" and 1989's "In Your Face" — before all members other than Wolf quit the group.

With a new, mostly German lineup, KINGDOM COME remains active, with several subsequent releases and tours in Europe under their collective belts.

In a March 2011 interview with The Great Southern Brainfart. KINGDOM COME singer Lenny Wolf was asked if he was hurt by the criticism that his band received early on for sounding like LED ZEPPELIN. "I was a young man, a singer who hardly spoke English and our band just exploded," he said. "We were excited and at first the press celebrated us. I remember [U.K.'s] Kerrang! [magazine] said, 'Finally, there's a band like 'the big magic Z!'' and we were all very happy. I must admit that there were some similarities, but in no way did we even get close. Every band, especially young bands, are influenced by somebody and those influences will surface when you start writing your own stuff. In the beginning, we took it as a compliment then all of the sudden some press person overheard Danny saying, 'Who's Jimmy Page?' He was saying it out of context like, 'Oh no, not this question again.' so he printed that one line: 'KINGDOM COME guitarist announces he's never heard of Jimmy Page.' This is so far out and ridiculous but the way the media works. The press loves victims. They love kicking you when you on the ground and they'll kick you even more. That's just the way it is. We also learned that bad press is better than no press and once I realized that, I just ignored it and I didn't care anymore. Fortunately, the music does all the talking and if the music gives you goosebumps and the music moves you than don't worry about it . . . We took it as a compliment and were excited. We were playing in London the night before Robert Plant was playing and we went down to see him. He was goofing with us, having fun and he was so relaxed. Robert Plant is like above all. He's really above everything. He was joking with us and it was really great. It really made me sad when I noticed Jimmy Page, who was one of my heroes, starting to whine about little KINGDOM COME who was never really a threat at all."

Their first 2 albums KICKED ASS. Simple as that. Everyone has influences. And as hard as it is to believe....not everyone grew up worshipping at the altar of Zeppelin. This was a great band and those first 2 albums were a huge part of my teenage years. If you missed out on those first 2....well you just missed the fuck out.

If their first 2 albums really did, in fact, "KICK ASS", the band would not have faded away into obscurity as quickly as they did.

i saw them open for Black Sabbath on the Headless Cross tour in 1989.. They were good and the crowd were into them until Lenny Wolf got pissed that the monitor mix was bad and started kicking the monitors.. The crowd turned on him pretty fast after that ..

Sabbath's sound guy didn't do them any favors.. .. their hall mix was pretty crappy too

You are so right the sound guy for Black Sabbath did suck. I was shocked he was not fired, BS sound was all over the place for that tour. Very few days was I happy with the sound of the band.

I was at about 15 shows and only one show had a good sound.

I know they get a lot of hate because they sound "like" Zep. The wrote some great songs, played their asses off on the Monsters of Rock tour. Played very well opening for the Scorps on Savage Amusement tour.

The first 2 albums were very strong efforts. I do find it funny that they get bashed for being "clones". They were not and still are not the only bands that you can say are rip offs or clones. In the industry Great White was bashed for "all their hits are covers" and QR the same. I was in a meeting with an record executive that called SVR a cheap "knock off of ZZtop". I always felt KC was more or less blues harder rock band, along the lines of Cinderalle.

The first album was great, front to back. The second album was OK but you could tell they were trying to get away from their original sound, which was too bad. They got a raw deal; Kingdom Come smoked most of the bands coming out around that time, which is why they opened Monsters Of Rock back in '88.

And on a related note, the first Stone Fury album (Lenny Wolf) Burns Like A Star was great too. Just had to throw that in.

David coverversion ( robert plants words not mine) on numerous occasions plundered the mighty zeps vault as well. To the tune of earning a great deal of bread and butter and still enjoying dry crusts at this point in time. not totally negative. John Sykes is a top player who made whitesnake good when they mattered.

I always liked the original Kingdom Come. And for those that say they were Led Zep clones...yeah, probably so. But it is well documented that Led Zep (yes, the mighty Led Zeppelin) themselves ripped off countless other artists. A simple youtube search will prove that point. In fact, LZ didn't just rip off a SOUND, they would use the EXACT SAME LYRICS from older songs.

I'm not saying KC was original. But those that hold Led Zeppelin in such high regard need to check themselves.

Zep ripped off riffs, but sounded like themselves. Not saying that is right. The difference is Kingdom Come just ripped off the whole thing, the whole Zep sound. Its not like Zeppelin sounded like Howlin' Wolf, or who ever they ripped off...and yes, Zep did rip off most of their first 2 albums. But they did something original with it...hell, Plant stole his singing style from Steve Marriot. That 'way down inside, you NEEEEED" was done just like that by Marriot.

But, I've checked myself, and still hold Zep in very high regard. STill originals. And went on to write many originals, great producers, performers, musicians. Kingdom Come shouldn't be mentioned in same breath.

There were similarities to Zeppelin, but you could say that about countless groups. KK just got the most shit for it for whatever reason, maybe because Wolf sounds a lot like Plant?

I don't know their catalogue, but that single wasn't just the singer that was Zep like. the tempo, drums, riff, the whole thing...and yes, Great White, Zebra, there were countless others ,but this one immediately you went "zep copy".

agree w/you on the "cash grab". If it were a cash grab, they'd have regroup years ago. There's no cash to grab in this reunion. I hear crickets. Like them or not.

They opened Monsters of Rock at the LA Collosium but um ... 1. Dokken put on a killer show right after (Mick Brown threw a Tom out & a bloodied fan was running up the isle with it) Metallica killed it draining the seats with a confused security ( dude...to see the seats draining in swirls was crazy) Scorpions killed too where the fans just kept doing (waves) and watching that was a trip then there was the big trash fight during Van Halen which looked awesome & hot nailed with a Sprite. LA was totally on that day!!!

that's well documented. Let's say Zep stated on Zep I, Dazed & confused, written by Jake Holmes. and the whole first album they gave song writing credit where its due, that record would still be fantastic and sound like Led Zep. They should have given credit, but KingDom Come didn't steal the songs necessarily, but the whole Zep sound.
