SCOTT IAN: 'This Is By Far The Best Version Of ANTHRAX That We Have Ever Had' - July 23, 2012
Amy Harris of CityBeat recently conducted an interview with ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

CityBeat: What has it been like having Joey [Belladonna, vocals] back the past few tours with the band?

Scott: It's been like two and a half years already. Hopefully that answers the question. It is obviously been going great. We couldn't be happier with the record we made. We couldn't be happier with the way shows have been going. I think this is by far the best version of ANTHRAX that we have ever had.

CityBeat: You became a father last year for the first time. Has this changed your perspective on writing music or life in general?

Scott: I haven't really written yet since he was born because we have been in touring mode. One way that my perspective overall has changed is now having this person in my life that I love beyond anything I can comprehend. It makes me hate the human race even more because of all the pressure that comes with raising a child and wanting to protect him. People ask, "What do you have to be angry about?" and there is plenty to be pissed off about now. Look at what happened in Colorado last night with the guy shooting people in a movie theater. It sickens me to the pit of my stomach for a million reasons. What if that was my child in the movie theater?

CityBeat: It is terrible and it is beyond my comprehension how that can happen.

Scott: Up until he was born, I had my wife and close family but they are adults and are responsible for themselves. Now we have this person that is 100 percent helpless and relies on us to take care of him, so there is this protective instinct that showed up as soon as he was born. I think that will have a big impact on my writing in the future when the time comes.

CityBeat: What has been your craziest fan story over the past few years?

Scott: The craziest audiences in the world are in South America in Chile with the craziest fans overall. We do a signing every day at the Rockstar Energy Drink tent and we get to meet a lot of fans every day on this tour. Anyone who would get anything ANTHRAX-related tattooed on their body is amazing to me. I can't really call it too crazy because I have Gene Simmons [KISS] and Angus [Young] from AC/DC tattooed on me. I understand that point of view of being such a fan that you would be willing to make that commitment but being the guy in ANTHRAX and seeing an ANTHRAX-related tattoo makes you feel great because I know the commitment and I know how much ANTHRAX must mean to them.

...once they sold some CDs.
But, I mean, Joey wouldn't be my first choice for a singer but he FITS. And clearly these are his best vocals on a record, ever.

....lets see how long the honeymoon lasts.......

I'm a big Turbin/FFOM fan. I definitely think that lineup could have done more, but I wouldn't go as far to say No Turbin = No Anthrax.

I don't know about that...

Caggiano is a good guitarist and a nice guy, but Spitz was pretty badass back in the day.

It's definitely ONE OF their best lineups though.

How many times exactly is this egomaniac going to remind everyone how Great his band is?? And what a great parent he is? He has said that about 2 other versions as well, Scott must of forgotten when he said that Except when John Bush was in the band. That he was a Lion and Joey was a bird. Make up your mind you delusional fool. Billy Milano was 100% right what he said about Ian years ago!

how can anyone take this idiot seriously?

Anthrax was much better with Dan Spitz that is common knowledge

The man with the embedded ski cap needs to be Dan Spitzs guitar tech and then he can still hang around but be behind the scenes as he doesnt fit in this band

rob can play circles around dan shitz ... he does fit the band and completes it musically ... spitz was stuck on the pentatonic scale and knew little else ... shitz is average at best ... rob is a much better technical player and incorporates some actual skill in his craft ... there is a reason shitz is building watches ...

...but it's almost like a slap in the face to spitz to make a comment like that, as it's one person different from the "classic/popular" lineup!

i'm sure it's a throwaway, canned comment in ian's head, but out of context it can definitely be taken the wrong way

if anything, i believe spitz had his own health issues (heart related, i believe?) that prevented him from continuing with anthrax

also, don't dislike bush, but they're a different band with him up front... not better or worse, DIFFERENT... i like both, but anthrax gained their popularity with joey's voice, not turbin's, not bush's (although kudos to bush for being able to carry the torch very well during his time in the band)...

I dissagree with you Mr. Ian.

The 1985 through 1991 line-up was by far the best. You put out some great albums such as Spreading, Among, Persistence, and half of Euphoria (which should have been an EP only).

What you guys need to do next is remaster Fistful of metal with Joey on vocals.

....I'm so tired of hearing these guys toot their own horns over their recent success. Worship Music is the best album since White Noise for sure, but it's still a piece of pop metal shit!

The best thing that they can do now is ditch Joey, Rob, and Frank, and get Turbin, Spitz, and Lilker back for an Anthrax '83 tour to celebrate their 30th anniversary! Maybe by playing "Fistful of Metal" live they might actually be able to rediscover what thrash music is. They seemed to have forgotten a very long time ago.

Remember that TMS episode where Anthrax was without a singer? Ian clearly says if it was up to him it would be John Bush fronting Anthrax, and he regrets ever doing that reunion tour because they lost Bush as a result of it.

Scott was one of my heroes...but he has always been a money grubbing wishy washy wanna be rockstar. Money and fame was always their plan, but everything they did was based on shitty business decisions time and time again. They always tried to associate with famous rockers like Dime, or Cory Taylor, but never tried to do much on their own merit of great songwriting and great live shows. They backstabbed Spitz and Belladonna after the "official reunion a few years ago". They refused to pay Belladonna more that a shitty wage or allow him to do interviews even though he is the frontman. Now after they couldn't get Bush, and blew their load on that growly gayass Nelson anselmo wannabe, they had to tuck their tail between their legs and beg for Joey to come back.

And saying that...I do love the new album. It is their best in many years, but Spitz is still a better lead player and had more feeling and more melody in his solos. Rob is okay, but too much pointless shred speed which doesn't suit the songs. Just watch his performance on the Big 4 blu ray...his solos are kind of shitty. Then watch the dvd that came out with the reunion and spitz's solos are the best he has ever done. Leagues above Rob. Just a true metalhead's opinion.

sorry but i have to disagree ... dan spitz is an average guitarist ... rob is a far more technical player ... and doesn't lean on the pentatonic scale in every solo ... maybe a metalhead but not a guitar player ... :)

But since Spitz is watch making , making the big bucks..he is way better off without Anthrax. Probably a multi millionaire now.

Rob is good when it comes to productions and engineering. That is really his only saving grace in the band. Great production on the last two albums...especially Worship Music. Killer drum and bass tones which they haven't had maybe ever on record!

Ian is an egotistical ass....even Rob would say that Spitz is better then him. Rob is a better guitarist on a technical level, hands-down, but Spitz is the classic Anthrax writer as many have pointed out. Anyone who knows Rob knows he feels this way, he is humble and honored to be in the band. He is, as many have said, a great producer. I have worked with him and he is an awesome guy and he can write, but it would be in the vein of Ian/Spitz, so how can he compete against the original?! He can't and doesn't.

In my opinion Rob Caggiano's leads on Worship Music destroy every single lead I ever heard from Dan Spitz. It really doesn't matter in my mind if Spitz was in the "classic" line up or not. I saw that reunion bullshit too a few years ago and he was fucking awful! Caggiano owns him hands down!

Worship Music is in many ways their greatest achievement even though the classic albums are unbeatable as well. Surely Worship Music is the heaviest and most concise record Anthrax ever made. Joey Belladonna's vocals have reached the peak on that record, but he's always been more than a thrash metal vocalist any way, he's been and become much more accomplished as a singer than e.g. Hetfield, Araya, Blitz, Billy, Angelripper, Petrozza, Schmier or Cavalera.

"we've come for you all" ... that's right ... you lost your kick-ass vocalist for an opera singer wanna be ... you do have a much better lead player with rob ... oh well, almost doesn't get it for me ... every time i listen to "wm" i try and hear what john bush woulda sounded like singing those songs ... if onnnnnnnlyyyyy ...

Belladonna got better with time, age, and practice. Bush got worse. Bush used to be great in saint and on white noise. Then he had some mediocre performances on much of stomp 442 and average on wcfya. Mediocre meaning struggling to find the notes, sing in perfect pitch, and sliding in and out of notes...covering that up with his cool raspy voice. I saw live clips with him towards the end and he was struggling to hit clean notes and sustain them.
