BILLY CORGAN To Potential Rock Stars: Forget It - July 23, 2012
According to The Pulse Of Radio, SMASHING PUMPKINS founder and frontman Billy Corgan has a message for young musicians who want to be the next Trent Reznor or Kurt Cobain: forget about it. Corgan told the Daily Beast that most alternative acts will never escape that scene because influential sites like Pitchfork.com set the rules. He explained, "If you're 20 years old and you aspire to be like me or Kurt Cobain or Courtney Love or Trent Reznor, you're not going to make it that way. You won't succeed. Let's say you're the next Kurt Cobain. You will be appropriated on your first album by the Pitchfork community. Your record company will rally round that idea because that's your marketing platform. But the minute you're in that world you're frozen."

Corgan continued, "Those Pitchfork people are very much about social codes, about whether you're wearing the right t-shirt. That orthodoxy is no different than the rigidity of the football team at school. You can't break the social order if you're preaching to the choir — and the choir already has cool haircuts!"

The PUMPKINS mainman added, "You've got to want to subvert the social order of the high school. That's why NIRVANA was so fucking dangerous. They had the jocks listening to them. Kurt Cobain used to talk about how weird it was to be performing, and see the people who used to beat him up cheering along."

Corgan concluded by asking, "Where's the rebellion right now? There's almost no music about what's going on politically, which is crazy because this is the craziest political time I've ever lived in . . . Where are the bands of dissent?"

Corgan and the PUMPKINS released their seventh studio album, "Oceania", in June. It debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard album chart, selling 54,000 copies in its first week of release.

The PUMPKINS have yet to announce tour plans behind the new disc, although they are expected to tour the U.S. this fall.

Kurt? Ok. Trent? Fair enough. Courtney Love? Uh uh.

I think what Billy means is that the playing field is entirely different (by twenty years) than it used to be. Kurt may have gone out a knarly way, but he definitely was super-talented. Trent Reznor was cool once upon a time, but I could take him or leave him for the most part. Courtney Love remains an abomination as a facsimile of humanity. Once she threw her own daughter under the bus saying Dave Grohl hit on her (jealous much Courtney that Dave Grohl has more natural talent on his big toe hair than you ever will in your press-whoring, seeping-snatch life?)

I only wish Kurt had the strength to tell everyone (promoters, record label, Courtney, management, etc.) to fuck off for a year so he could get well and regroup. Who knows what kind of great stuff he'd be coming up with today had he survived his initial megastardom.

Billy may be a bit much on occasion, but he certainly is prolific and keeps trying new things, pushing himself. The Pumpkins new album 'Oceania' is actually quite happening. His new band sounds like a real band, too. People will gladly disagree with Billy, but I think he's right about all of the above.

You're full of shit. Those artists not only sold millions of records, they changes the formats of live music clubs and radio stations, they impacted the clothing people wore, and the way they styled their hair. They literally made music history and transformed pop culture, for better or worse.

Not liking it is one thing, but denying that they were influention just makes you sound stupid. Any honest person knows they were.

There's probably a point in there somewhere, but it's muddied by the now standard dose of Corganium.

...I almost hate to admit this but Oceania IMO is the first decent studio album he's done in about 12-13 years. A little humble pie might help sell it a little more man. Congrats though...I guess.

The Internet played one major role; it uncovered many myths around rock stars and actors who got a divine status in the 80s and 90s; they're pretty much normals folks, mentally challenged junkies and in many cases douchebags of the highest order.

The new kreator is full of it, and so was the last haunted album (although many of the numbskulls on here didn't get it) you can't deny dolving's proclivity towards anti establishment lyrics, he does it very well. The list goes on and on, metal has been getting smarter and smarter but sadly and unexpectedly the masses are just getting dumber and dumber.

In other topic, Corgan is smarter than most of you. If you don't hate him because of his music "not" being influential, it's because of his cue ball, or because he rants. It's always hate with most critics for whatever reason. Oceania is amazing, and I strongly think his music was very influential; being a druggy, or part of the druggy/grunge scene or whatever.

Kurt Cobain wasn't influential? now that's just not a smart thing to say no matter what kind of music you like - He was just using them for examples anyways I certainly understand his point - Metal has a much more dedicated fanbase than indie rockers they change like the wind ....also what is "tharash"

tharash is an overexagerated way of saying thrash to really drive the point home....OR it could simply just be a typo. You make the call.

Cobain may have been influential. The other 3 people he mentioned, himself included there (so humble), were possibly also influential... they influenced an entire generation to take too many drugs, be whining piss-panty entitled crybabies, and in extreme cases to kill themselves. Great. Here's your blue ribbon for your stellar job at influencing the youth. Metal is about fighting back, not taking any shit and rising above the madness and all the shit in life that tries to keep you down. Most of the popular 90's shit was about succumbing to it and crying about it through the art of song. Lame. Nirvana sucked and Cobain was a giant hack. The whole era was an embarrasment. The only good band to come out of it is Alice in Chains, but then, IMO they were always unduely lumped in with Grunge. Similar to the way Maiden is lumped in with Hair Metal.

That's just my asshole... I mean opinion.

Love him or hate him, he has always spoken his mind to media outlets, journalists and quite frankly anyone that takes time to ask him of his opinions. What's not to admire about that? We tend to live in a sugar coated world at times. Do I agree with everything he says? Hell no.

We should all commend a band that doesn't go out each summer playing the same setlist over and over. To me, that's cheating the fans for spending their hard earned money.

And, I've been a fan of SP since I saw them on the first date of the Siamese Dream tour in college for $5; I saw them on the MCIS tour; I caught a few dates of Machina; I saw one of the farewell shows in 2000 and I have seen them a few times since then with his new lineup. The guy is immensely talented, love him or hate him. He's also a fan of a ton of bands I have been into for ages. Heck, SP were even giving away free songs via their website.

And, I fully agree with what others have said about Oceania. It's a great album of new material from a band that has been around since 1988. IMO it's better than Adore and Zeitgeist, and right up there with Machina. To say it's up there with Gish, Siamese or MCIS would be like saying his beloved Cubs are as good as the Yankees.

And according to the article above, he still sold 54k copies the first week of release? These days, that isn't bad! Frankly, I'm shocked he sold that much.

But I bet he cried about it because it wasn't the millions he's used to.

You are dead wrong dude! The industry made those changes. Metal and rock were on top and selling millions of records. Some smart guys decided, let's dumb it down even more. Get rid of the wardrobes, get rid of the talent, try to rehash hippie culture. They were not influential. I have NEVER heard a kid say I want to play guitar just like Billy Corgan or a young girl say I was to be the next Courtney Love, I have heard them praise Lita Ford though. Because Lita can actually play! I knew it was over for them when I heard one of those alt bands say in an interview that guitar solos were for show offs! This was blasphemous!!!!! Now these guys are considered the old has Beens and black veil brides are selling more records. I hope the music world never gets as stupid again as they did when alternative came out. Man half of them couldn't even tour! Fake rock at its most extreme!!!!

Everything Billy Corgan said is 100% correct. Whether you're a metal band or an alternative band you have to fit into a box. Websites like Pitchfork, Blabbermouth, Metal Sucks and a bunch of others have an elitist attitude towards bands. They decide if you're cool and can be part of their club with all of the other "cool kids" or they decide if you're not going to be cool and they turn everyone against you.

Just look at the posts on this site. It's like a broken record of everyone saying who sucks and who is cool.

If you're an artist you can't be original anymore, unless the "cool kids" at these websites allow you to be original.

This is just like high school but on a much bigger scale.

These websites should be objective and let fans decide who they like instead of trying to influence what people are going to like or not like.

They should also shut down the user comment sections since it's basically nothing but negativity and a constant chorus of people saying e wry thing sucks.

If by saying the industry made those changes, you're talking about MTV, then you'd be correct. Most, if not all bands that became popular from say, 1981-2001, did so because MTV played their videos. On the other hand, most bands that got popular via MTV exposure that declined in popularity, that decline happened because MTV stopped playing their videos. Glam/Hair metal is the prime example. Nirvana didn't kill Hair Metal-MTV did. Then again, MTV made Hair Metal in the first place. MTV made Nirvana popular. MTV made all those bands popular..

Billy is 100% right on this. No question. If you want to be as great as Kurt or Trent, you can't be fueled by the excitement of being signed to some popular, hip label and do everything they tell you and count on their promises of stardom. You have to stick your finger in their face and break all of their rules. and then break more rules and break them again.

And why there is no bands of political dissent - because the kids are lazy, entitlement generation, participation trophy kids who have never worked for a damn thing in their lives. They don't understand business, finance, working, and economics. They think the government will provide it for you with a magic money machine. They are so weak minded as to think that capitalism is bad and greedy without really understanding that capitalism is what allows for real liberty and freedom from government control. Be a capitalist and give back if you really want to change the world - donate to charity, run an honest and ethical business, in-source, hire those who need an opportunity. That is what will set us free. Well, socialism has only ever brought equal misery to nations and people in the long run, government interference in all aspects of life in the name of the collective, and the realityis the death of millions of people world wide since the 1900s. Kids today, they want it all and they want it now - at the expense of you and me. And bands like SOAD and RATM are basically getting their way now, they have nothing to complain about. They wanted Obama, they wanted socialism, they wanted what made America great (work ethic, individualism, doing things on your own, earning your own way, personal liberty, personal responsibility, dreams of prospering, working hard for something, real opportunity with reward, earning respect, etc) to be eliminated in favor of entitlements, social engineering, big over bloated government who reward those who contribute nothing. Keep in mind - the American dream isn't a $600 welfare check, food stamps, and hanging out in mom's basement smoking weed and playing video games all day - it is having an opportunity to pursue your dreams how you see fit. Yeah it fucking sucks, but its where we are in this nation and in the music industry at and it's why all of these kids steal music instead of buying. Bunch of lazy, worthless assholes.

I guess I'm just old but I've never heard of pitchfork.com before he mentioned it. The rest of his rambling nonsense is just that. People gravitate towards what they like or what excites them. Whether it's greasy whiners staring at the floor while they play or insane but talented chicks who wear ridiculous outfits and make spectacles of themselves. Music is open to everything and everyone and there is no telling what's going to become a trend or what's going to change people's perspectives. If you're starting a band because you think you're going to be an icon, you're probably going to be sorely disappointed. If you're starting a band because you want to make music you love and you don't care who else raises your flag, then you'll never be disappointed.
