METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN, CHICKENFOOT Featured On 'Re-Machined: A Tribute To Machine Head' - July 23, 2012
METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN, CHICKENFOOT and BLACK LABEL SOCIETY are among the artists who have re-interpreted songs from DEEP PURPLE's classic "Machine Head" album for "Re-Machined: A Tribute To Machine Head", a compilation CD which will be made available with Classic Rock magazine's upcoming DEEP PURPLE fanpack. Due on Septemer 4, the fanpack also comes with an in-depth, official, band-endorsed 124-page magazine which includes exclusive new interviews with world-class guitarists Joe Bonamassa and Steve Vai and the members of METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN and CHICKENFOOT, among others, talking about recording these classic songs, plus brand new interviews with DEEP PURPLE — one of the last interviews with the late Jon Lord — on the making of their most well-loved album and exclusive and previously unpublished photographs and artefacts from the PURPLE archives.

Hearing of Jon Lord's sad passing, Glenn Hughes assembled some friends to cut "Highway Star" last week as a tribute to his dear friend. The performance is one of the greatest performances Glenn Hughes has committed to record.

Drummer Lars Ulrich of METALLICA, who are also recording a song for the upcoming Ronnie James Dio tribute album, previously said, "We were asked if we'd contribute to the anniversary of 'Machine Head' — we can't turn that down. We're circling the Dio and PURPLE catalogs and hopefully we'll come up with something that is worthy of these wonderful men."

"Re-Machined: A Tribute To Machine Head" track listing:

01. Smoke On The Water - CARLOS SANTANA
02. Highway Star - CHICKENFOOT
03. Maybe I'm A Leo - GLENN HUGHES, CHAD SMITH, LUIS MALDONADO
04. Pictures Of Home - BLACK LABEL SOCIETY
05. Never Before - KINGS OF CHAOS (Joe Elliott, Steve Stevens, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum, Arlan Schierbaum)
06. Smoke On The Water - THE FLAMING LIPS
07. Lazy - JIMMY BARNES, JOE BONAMASSA
08. Space Truckin' - IRON MAIDEN
09. When A Blind Man Cries – METALLICA
10. Highway Star - GLENN HUGHES, STEVE VAI, CHAD SMITH, LACHLAN DOLEY (exclusive track)

Especially following the last news article, I was confused that Metallica and especially Iron Maiden would record Machine Head covers. But oh, Deep Purple, that's different.

That's exactly what I though. Wow! Machine Head must have really made it. But, yeah, Machine Head the album makes much more sense!

..should be easy enough, it's a very slow song, doesn't seem overly difficult.

Weird song for Metallica to play, I guess that was the only one left...:-)

Knob Flynn just creamed and shit himself at the same time thinking that Metallica would pay him a tribute. Then he realised it's about Deep Purple and called his maid to clean.

I dug it actually: where they segue into "A National Acrobat" and then back into "Sabbra Cadabra". It wasn't that bad, man. It sounds bottom-heavy enough to these ears. Eh, it's Monday. Onward Red Paint!

It's bottom heavy, yeah, but like a drum machine. That's when Lars was thinking he could be a subtle drummer, but he sounds like an elephant in a porcelain shop. Groove is not, and never will be his thing.

The Lips covering Smoke On The Water? It's worth it just for that. Been rocking lots of Deep Purple in tribute. Even a bit of Whitesnake since I just want to hear more John Lord.

I'd rather see someone else playing "When A Blind Man Cries." I think Joe Bonamassa would be more fitting for that song. Too bad Jeff Healey is no longer alive, there's a video on youtube of him and Glenn Hughes jamming to that song. Jeff absolutely kills it.

a fast one like "highway star" for example. The combination of Hetfield's vocals with "When a blind man cries" sounds diabolical to me .

Hahah, nice. I guess they figure they can get away with it because they've done Mama Said, Tuesday's Gone, Brothers in Arms.

Really though, given Lars' love of the Purple family, this is not the best way they could finally bother to tribute them.

It is cool that Maiden are finally doing the same, with a more appropriate song.

Not that I think bands should be expected to do covers, but given that Maiden and Metallica have always made it a big part of their output, it seemed almost rude that various members cited DP so highly, but they covered everyone but DP.

Chickenfoot do it well live, and Satch did a good job of it with Purple, so a studio version should be solid.

Maiden recorded this track back in 2006. Not released till now. Cannot fucking wait.

As for Metallica, just picture Lar$: "aauuuuummmmm....let's cover the track noone would expect us to do! aaauuuuuuummmm....". His desire to challenge our preconceptions has itself become predictable.
