VINNIE PAUL: Reforming PANTERA Without DIMEBAG 'Would Tarnish The Legacy Of The Band' - July 22, 2012
Ned of the WGRD 97.9 FM radio station in Grand Rapids, Michigan recently conducted an interview with former PANTERA and current HELLYEAH drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott as well as Vinnie's HELLYEAH bandmate Tom Maxwell. You can now listen to the entire 11-minute chat in the YouTube clip below. A couple of excerpts follow.

On Vinnie Paul's recent comment that if PANTERA ever reformed, Zakk Wylde (BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, OZZY OSBOURNE) would be the man to replace the band's late guitarist — and Vinnie's brother — "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott:

Vinnie: "There was a whole lot more that was said before that. It was from a station [97.1 The Eagle Rocks] that I did an interview with in Dallas, with Cindy [Scull], who's a really good friend of mine. We were just talking about being down in Australia. We had just done some shows with HELLYEAH, also with BLACK LABEL while we were down there, and we had done some hanging. I think the bottom line is Zakk's a great friend of mine. Obviously, he was a really great friend of Dime's. But the truth of the matter is Dime was PANTERA. He was such a huge part of it, and I just think it would tarnish the legacy of the band and everything that he was all about to try to have somebody else get up there and play. That's how I feel about it. I'm very, very proud and happy to be doing what I'm doing with HELLYEAH. It's called moving on in your life. You've gotta move forward, and that's what I'm doing."

Tom: "I have absolute respect for Zakk and all these other guitar players, and as a fan of PANTERA, I would have loved to have seen that happen again, but nobody can fill those shoes; it would not be the same, even for a fan. You might be able to get some kind of nostalgic thing out of it, but you're not getting Dime. Pretty much, man, as a guitar player, when I went and saw [PANTERA], [Dimebag] is who I wanted to see."

On whether he would show up to a hypothetical PANTERA Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction knowing that his former bandmates — vocalist Philip Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown — were also going to be there:

Vinnie: "Well, until that day comes along, I won't be able to answer that question for you."

In a recent interview, Wylde was asked about Vinnie's comment that Zakk would be the man to replace Dimebag in an imaginary PANTERA reunion. "My thoughts on the PANTERA thing… Everybody's been asking me about it now, too. Which is cool," Zakk said. "I love [Vinnie Paul]. Rex I saw at my roast [in January]. It was great seeing Rex again. And Phil, I know. . . Put it this way, if the guys were ever to do that and they asked me to… Obviously, it would be to honor Dimebag's greatness and the band's amazing achievements. I mean, to me, as far as I'm concerned, if the guys were to do it, it would just be a celebration of everything they achieved and a celebration of Dime's life and Dime's greatness. So, of course, I'd be honored to play my fallen brother's stuff, without a doubt. And I know he'd be getting a kick out if it, too. That's for sure; he'd be laughing his ass off. But that's all up to the guys. So whatever… I'd always be there for them. Without a doubt."

In May, Anselmo was asked by Ned of the WGRD 97.9 FM radio station about the likelihood of a PANTERA reformation with Wylde, "That's an interesting question," he said. "Well, look, before anything like that could possibly happen, Vince and I would have to actually be in the same room, we'd have to sit down, hash out whatever differences, demons… whatever… we'd have to hash it all out. And as far as Zakk Wylde goes, I'm not so sold on all that, because I think he and I have to sit down and hash some crap out. That day has not come yet, and [when] that day comes, I can comment further on it. As of right now, it's just talk."

Former PANTERA bassist Rex Brown also addressed the possibility of Wylde taking Dimebag's place in a reformed PANTERA. He told the San Antonio Metal Music Examiner in May, "You know, we keep hearing rumors about a reunion with Zakk Wylde on guitar, and that is such bullshit. You can't replace my brother."

100% agree. I loved Pantera, seen them 7 or 8 x live, but I would never see PanterA without Dime, he was a huge part of Panteras sound. It's like the Doors playing without Morrison.

People can hate on Vin, but the dude has integrity. He would easly release ever single note Dime ever recorded, released 10 Pantera live shows and tons of dimes home movies, but he hasn't

Dime was to Pantera what Eddie is to Van Halen: a tad irreplaceable. Unless it was a one-off gig for charity or something, I wouldn't see the point in even trying. No Dime, No Pantera. A bit like Led Zeppelin without Jimmy Page.

I feel sorry for Vinnie and Phil just for the fact that nearly every fucking interview centers around a Pantera question, bringing up their dead friend and who would be a good replacement for him.
I wish the media would leave the legacy alone and move the fuck on, but controversial subjects are always good for ratings.

Vinnie's absolutely right. If Dime were alive, he would not perform with Phil anymore anyway. Truth, and Vinnie knows it.

There are instances where a band can carry a torch successfully after a death, this is not one of them. It's a pandoras box better left untapped.

A one off annual tribute show might work, but again, that may not even work.

reforming as a tribute to one of the best metal guitarists ever would be totally acceptable. No one would see it as 'replacing' dimebag, it would be all about him and the music that is his living legacy.

BUT as a celebration to Dimebag and the great Pantera SONGS.
I'm sure Dimebag wants the songs to be played live again
with he's friend Zakk on the guitar.

Just have fun with these great songs man!
That's what i believe Dimebag is thinking up there
in heaven together with Jimi Hendrix, Cliff Burton,Bon scott....

Just have fun with these fucking great songs maaaan!

The new HellYeah is pretty good, actually. I don't get why people bash the guy, he has only been true to himself and respectful of Dime's legacy.

Also, Zakk would not do justice to Pantera's style. His technique, tone and persona is just totally different to that of Dime's.

There will never be a Pantera "reunion." No person alive can play Dime's shit the way he did. No one. I'm relieved to know that not one of the original members see it ever happening.

Let's go to the comments!

"
reforming as a tribute to one of the best metal guitarists ever would be totally acceptable. "

No, it wouldn't. The best tribute to Dime is to leave his music, HIS music, as a testament to his legacy.

"you alraedy stepped in Randy Rhoads' shoes stop trying to get into Dime's! "

You're an idiot. Zakk never said he was TRYING to get into Dime's shoes, he said he'd be ready if the members called him.

"When a band loses a member they go on in respect of that member look at Metallica, Slipknot and Megadeth who have moved on and had even greater success "

True. But Dime's imprint on Pantera's music is huge compared to that of the members those bands lost. Arguable about Cliff, for sure - but this isn't about a band carrying on and making new music as Metallica did.

No Dime - No Pantera.

something to the effect of, you know, people seem to trip when a rock group breaks apart. "it's only a rock group split up; you have all the old albums there if you want to reminisce".
Dime passed away exactly 24 years to the day Lennon died; since then Vinnie has moved on but some folks refuse to give it a rest; and a certain ex-Marine got pissed enough to kill innocent people because of it.
Forget about this reunion, all of you get on with your own lives. I, for one, am gonna spin my freshly bought copy of Far Beyond Driven and be thankful for Dime's legacy. Damn right no Dime=no Pantera.

Hellyeah sucks but Vinnie's right about not replacing Dime. Yeah some bands lose key members, get replacements and carry on well like Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Opeth, etc, but with Pantera there have been a lot of bands trying to rip off them like A Perfect Murder, Sign of the Southern Cross, or worst yet Orphaned To Hatred and it sounds terrible. There are some bands who cannot have their sound recreated by someone else and Pantera is definitely one of them.

The murder of Dime by that piece of shit Nathan Gay was one of the worst events in MUSIC history. I was in Highschool when Cowbys from Hell came out and it took me down a whole new road musically . I remember being in the Army in '94 and watching the CFH and Vulgar videos on VHS and actually feeling like i personally knew Phil , Rex , Vinnie and Dime even though i never met them lol saw Pantera 10 times but never met them. And when Watch it Go came out me and my buds must have watched that VHS a 100 times before it finally gave out lol . I just hate how people come on here and blame Phil for Dime's murder or hate on Vinnie because Damageplan and HellYea suck ( and they both do suck ) and ive even seen folks on here bashing Rex lol . The reunion can never happen because Dime is gone and it never will no matter what Zakk or anyone else says and thank god for that. All im saying is that if ya loved Pantera back in the day like i did keep on lovin em and Dime's memory will live on forever.

Who cares? I've never heard those albums, so as a major Pantera fan they mean nothing to me. I have no interest in hearing what they were on their way to becoming what they became.

The entire metal population, other than you, totally separate Pantera's musical legacy as everything up until Cowboys From Hell as "before" and everything after as Pantera.

No one gives a fuck if you don't see it that way.

This should never happen. It would RUIN the Pantera Legacy. No, I never got to see Zeppelin live and Robert Plant said it wouldn't be the same without his CHILDHOOD Fucking Friend whom he started the band with, Let alone HIS BROTHER Like Vinnie's. I respect that. I GET IT! Not to mention, Robert did just fine on his own with HARD WORK. It's not Pantera without Dime.

I did get to see Pantera Live so I get the age difference logistics of some cry babies who can't understand. It's Called INTEGRITY! And to the shit sacs that missed em' cause they had their dick in their hand, that's life. It's not Pantera without Dime.

Those new vinyls are awesome. I am a TRUE Fucking fan that owns everything like Riotact but would NEVER go see this. I would NEVER go to see Pantera with Zakk for FREE, if you paid for my drinks, Picked me up and sucked my dick in a limo. The same shit as Sabbath without Bill Ward and Journey without Steve Perry. It's not Pantera without Dime.

Zakk is not good enough to string Dime's Guitar. Seriously, FUCK OFf.......NO, seriously fuck off.

Sorry, the new Hellyeah fucking slays. Fucking trolls never even listened to it. You are just critics of an illusion that someone plants in your mind from reading a forum. Base your own opinion.

Kill Devil Hill Fucking Rules Too! Just played the new vinyl. Fucking sweet bitches. Fucking killed it live too.

New Down shit coming soon. Looks like everyone is working hard to me.

Want a piece of Pantera? How bout lobbyin or creating a good buzz to end the Legacy on a Fucking AWESOME note, like having Phil and Rex go and record the parts to the 2nd unreleased Damageplan album. NOW that though raises hair on my neck. REAL Pantera.

I actually agree with Zach for once, nicely said. Vinnie hit the nail on the head and if they where to continue as Pantera, they should pull Vogg from decapitated, period. If you've been a fan of Pantera for awhile, you can not miss the underlining similarities from Vogg, intentional or not.

Continuing on with Zakk would just be a caricature of the legacy, except Zakk has been a copy-cat his whole career, so I'm sure he'd be able to make it work.

This is right up there with the GunsnRoses reunion crap...ENOUGH already! When vinnie Paul is broke enough he'll do a fake reunion. "Legacy!!" that's a joke, this is Pantera not Sabbath or Maiden. People need to get a grip on here with all the Pantera worship, they made a couple of decent albums, but all this "Legay of Pantera" talk is a bunch of newjack bullshit! As I mentioned on here before, go check their first three albums they were doing the spandex/glam/hairmetal thing WITH Dime in the band so enough with this bullshit already!

No one can/will/should replace Chuck Schuldiner but I never had a chance to see Death live. I went to the Death to All show in Orlando last month and it was amazing! No one was trying to replace Chuck, it was just an awesome memorial. They played over 2 hours of songs that I otherwise never would have heard live! I can understand there never being another Pantera album but as long as Vinnie, Phil, and Rex are alive, let those songs live too! I've seen Pantera five times but would love to go hear some of those songs again. And forget about Zakk, get some kids who grew up idolizing Dimebag, rotate the guitarists, whatever. But pay homage to his music by playing it live! I know it will never happen but I can dream.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you're an idiot.

Pantera absolutely has a legacy. Don't think so?

Pfffft. No one cares.

Also - learn to spell legacy.

n a recent interview, Wylde was asked about Vinnie's comment that Zakk would be the man to replace Dimebag in an imaginary PANTERA reunion.

If Phil & Zakk would quit answering the questions about a reunion with a "maybe" and start saying "no" instead then maybe Vinnie would not have to put his 2 cents in. Vinnie has NO INTEREST performing as Pantera so it is pointless to keep bringing the subject up.
