DISTURBED Singer Slams 'Irresponsible' Parents Who Take Kids To Late-Night Movie Showings - July 22, 2012
After it was revealed that a 6-year old girl, Veronica Moser-Sullivan, was one of the victims of last week's Colorado movie theater massacre, there has been some criticism about parents who would take young children to see a midnight screening of the new Batman film, "The Dark Night Rises".

DISTURBED singer David Draiman, who has never been afraid to voice his opinion on controversial topics, took to his Twitter account and tweeted a link to a CNN report which posed the question if infants were too young to be at late-night movie showings. Draiman first wrote "Yes, they are," before further elaborating on Twitlonger.com (a related Twitter site that allows one to send tweets that require more than 140 characters), stating, "All you parents out there that think it's OK to take your infants out on the town with you, to a movie theater or otherwise, do the world a favor. Give your children up for adoption to parents who know what it is to be a responsible parent, and sacrifice on behalf of their children. Get a damn babysitter.”

He added, "Maybe we should take infants to nightclubs and restaurants in the late hours of the night as well? Honestly, fuck off. This is why only certain people should be allowed the gift of a child. Too many simply aren't ready for the responsibility.”

After apparently receiving several negative responses to his rant, Draiman wrote, "anyone who doesn't like what's being said on here, simply unfollow," before tweeting, "Wow … Multiple-choice question, kids. People either 1. Can't read 2. There are more shitty parents out there than I thought 3. All of the above."

Veronica was named on Saturday as one of the 12 victims of the Aurora cinema shooting. Another 58 people were injured when suspect James Holmes opened fire during a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises".

I agree that a six yr old has no business out after midnight, but COME ON!
Why would he make this an issue?
(Oh, and I'm sure parents will cherish the advice from DISTURBED vocalist all day)
Parents spending - GASP! - honest/quality time with their kids, at any hour, should be admired, not ripped.

Most kids over the age of 10 who'll willingly hang with parents at night are that way because of solid, responsible parenting.
Hell, by 13 I was a lying, thieving, weed puffing wannabe metalhead who jacked off every other hour no matter where I was.
If my Pop told me to be in by 9pm, I'd make sure I wasn't.
If he told me I to quit smoking cigs, I'd smoke twice as much. I'm youngest of 7, and all bros/sisters were exact opposite of this.

There's a point in here somewhere.
Oh yeah. Midnight movies with Ma & Pop woulda been a hellava lot more positive than hanging w/my goon ass friends.

Matter of fact, if I ever see a kid hanging w/parents at late show, I'm gonna congratulate them for being good parents.
Might never happen. Last movie I saw in theatre was, I think, Very Bad Things, so it's been very long time.

No.
I didn't.
Kids not at stage where they'll understand - my 16 yr old nephew comes to mind - shouldn't be there.
This self-important buffoon suggests a late Batman flick is harmful in same way a nightclub crowd would be. Yeah, I'm sure just last week he scolded some parent for this.
"He's too young for a late movie! What if there's a massacre?"
If it's a once in a blue moon occasion, how is this wrong?

It's a movie based on a comic strip hero, NOT A F'N GG ALLIN GIG!

First, let me state that I don't have kids. I'm not going to pretend to know what it's like and all the stress that comes with that. However, I don't think I would take a 6 year old to that particular movie, just because it would probably freak them out. Heck, I was 5 when Jack Nicholson played the Joker and I thought he was scary as hell. I don't think I could've handled a character like Bane at that age.

Well I think he and all of you are completely wrong: the parents did _the best_ they could to prevent their child getting shot by a spree killer. Most popular places for American spree killers were, from what I remember, usually malls, schools or univerities, or just streets of their neighbourhood. Usual time: broad fucking daylight.

Don't be fucking ridiculous and don't say that their child getting shot by a madman should be considered a normal risk a responsible parent has to remember about. It's not their fault for fuck's sake.

Read reports about a couple bringing not only a 4-year old kid to the midnight show, but a 4-month old baby as well. I'm sure a loud theater is great for an infant's hearing development.

Even if the shooting tragedy didn't occur, people have issue with just how irresponsible, self-centered, and inappropriate it is to bring a baby to a movie at that time.

Show some respect for the other people in the theater.

Worst parenting I ever witnessed: a woman brought her infant to see GRINDHOUSE.

I don't care much for Disturbed or their music, but I partially agree with this guy. Allow me to clarify:

All to often, I believe, have many people gone to see a film and have had to listen to the cries and shrieks of a baby. I don't fault the children naturally, especially if they are young, because they are usually dragged along whether they want to endure the film or not and forced to listen to the sounds/images that terrify/upset them. This, in turn, upsets and angers the audience who have coughed up the cash (movie tickets aren't that cheap nowadays) and would like to enjoy a 2+ hour film without the additional soundtrack. Parents, great that you want to enjoy a film and have your kids along, but sometimes it just won't work. If you know a movie is going to have frightening/disturbing images and loud explosions, don't bring your child. Hire a sitter, or wait until it comes out on DVD. It's part of the responsibility of being a parent: you think about your child and others before yourself.

Secondly, I am truly puzzled why anyone would bring a child so young to The Dark Knight Rises, these aren't the 60's Adam West Bat flicks, these films can get pretty upsetting.

All it took was one maniac to turn what could have been a pleasant nightly experience into a tragedy...it's truly upsetting to see something so horrible happen.

TL;DR version: Keep the young kids at home and what happened truly was tragic.

so kids can't go to movies anymore because there might be psycho waiting to bust in and shoot the place up? It doesn't make any sense to me.

This was an isolated incident and has nothing to do with theater safety. He could of broken into anywhere with that kind of firepower. So i guess if he would of shot up a daycare, he would say that the parents are irresponsible for taking their kids to daycare. It's also pretty dumb that they are taking adds for the movie off the air but thats a different story.

And anyways why are they interviewing him? I though disturbed broke up. Find a new band to join or get off a metal news site.

Are you fucking kidding me? It's a Batman movie. There are kids out there in all age groups who are completely stoked on Batman.

You're telling me that it's irresponsible parenting to take a 6 year old child to a late night showing of fucking Batman? In the summertime? When there's no school? Where do you people come up with this shit? IT'S BATMAN! When I was 6, I would have lost my shit if my parents were taking me out to see this movie! Does anyone honestly think that this poor child's parents were expecting a crazed gunman to burst into the theatre and start killing people?! Don't you dare turn this around of the goddamn parents, you insensitive pricks. This was NOT their fault, and rests completely on the shoulders of the psycho who decided to shoot the place up.

Yes it is irresponsible and absolutely inconsiderate of EVERYONE else in the theater. Sorry folks, but sometimes you have to think of how your actions might affect others. Tough concept to grasp in 2012, I suppose.

We used to live on a busy street in a big city. My three-month old could sleep through anything! When I was out of town, my wife took him to a late night movie. I think it was Suspect Zero or something of that sort. Point is, not a kid movie. So when I see a four month old at a movie like that, I'm assuming the parents are young, comic book fans, probably on thier own with no help and seeing the late night movie probably wouldn't effect thier child.

The point? YOU DON'T KNOW ANYONE'S SITUATION. When I look for parenting advice I'm not going to find it in a Disturbed interview. (or even the bands I like)

Someone murdered 12 people, it is completely inappropriate to point the blame at parents who brought their kid to see Batman. I remember being 6, parents always took their kids to action super hero movies. Batman is idolized by kids, 6 year olds LOVE batman, and Kids are a major market for that franchise. Yeah, the new films have a "more adult" theme, but in the end it's just another Batman movie. A movie theater in the Suburbs is no dangerous place, it would be no more dangerous than any other public places, someone could have shot up a Disney On Ice show if they chose to.

Fact of the matter is that people these days want their kids wearing helmets and elbow pads while running around the house. Let your kids watch Arnold movies and bike around the block without a helmet on once in awhile. As long as you have the ability to teach them right from wrong, respect, and tolerance, they're not going to turn out like dipshits like this hack from Disturbed or the bastard who shot up the theatre.

This is just a bizarre confusion of issues. I totally agree that babies and kids should not be going to late night movies. But thats a completely different issue from what happened in Colorado. The shooter could have just as easily gone to an early show and shot young people.

Its also inappropriate at the moment to be attacking parents for bringing kids to a theater at night, even though I 100% agree with point. There are 70 people dead or injured, don't kick sand in their face because of what time and who they brought to the movie. The shooting had nothing to do with the time of the show.

If we're specifically talking about infants, I don't disagree. To bring a baby or toddler to a movie, knowing full well they can't enjoy or perceive what's going on, nor have the patience for it, is selfish and stupid. Your 'need' to see a movie, comedian, enjoy fine cuisine, etc, does not trump everyone else's enjoyment, and above all, your child.

But like someone else said, I couldn't think of a more positive example of parenting than sharing a mutual interest with your children and treating them to something like a midnight screening of your favourite movie or something. Children need this kind of engaged parenting. I don't think Dave would disagree with this, and going by the article, it sounds like he was talking about small children. If he wasn't, then fuck 'em, but I doubt anyone is that antagonistically stupid. His point probably wasn't put across as well as it should have been.

I'm 49 years old, I am the father of 2 teenage daughters and I completely disagree with him.

The problem isn't the parents of a 6 year old girl bringing her to a midnight movie. I am shocked that anyone would even think to blame them for any wrong doing.

There are places a 6 year old shouldn't be allowed to go to . places that it could be uncomfortable for them and other patrons.. A Batman movie premiere isn't one of them.

The singer from Disturbed is way off base.

This guy masters the art of mixing two unrelated things just to get attention. He's half-right half-wrong. At 6 years old my father brought me to see some late night movies not less violent than this. I didn't fucked up my life. It's called good parenting and education.

Kids love to go to sleep late once in a while, and when it's the vacation, it's totally normal. Good parents know when to give freedom and when not. He can't fucking judge parents that way for something so fucking vague. Who fucking knows, maybe they came back from a trip across the world and were still jetlagged on Paris' time and couldn't sleep, who the fuck knows.

Now the other unrelated thing. Yes bringing a baby to see a movie in theatre isn't really bad parenting (ear plugs!) but it's absolutely rude to the public in the room. Who wants to ear a fucking baby crying during a movie unless it's actually in the movie? Nofuckingbody! Cinemas should have a minimum age to begin with.

Now, why is he mixing those two things together? Is he assuming that getting your kids late at night is dangerous and bad parenting? Unless you live in a fucking ghetto it's not.

Its not just the issue that kids shouldn't be up that late, its the type of movie that Batman is which imo is innappropriate. Yea its cool for a kid to stay up so take em to see a kid friendly movie or stay home & play with them. Anyone who thinks dragging a kid to a loud, violent movie counts as quality time with your chiild is clearly wrong.

I am a parent. While I agree it is not the most responsible thing to take an infant to a movie for a number of reasons, I whole-heartedly disagree with the notion that you shouldn't take your six year old to see Batman.

First, as a parent, I look for things to have in common with my kids. It is fun and rewarding to talk and share about similar interest. One genre that transcends age are super heroes and comic books, and one of the most popular trends right now are super hero movies. What parent wouldn't want to share that with their kids?

Second, do you remember how cool it was to be able to stay up late at night? It made you feel that somehow you were getting away with something. I remember that feeling so I know how my kids are going to feel. They are going to think it's awesome.

Now, let me tell you, if my kids are climbing the walls to see a movie, and as a parent, I have an opportunity to be parent-of-the-year in their eyes by letting them stay up late to see a movie no one has seen yet, then dammit I am going to do it. I'd do it even if I didn't necessarily want to see the stupid movie myself.

Judge all you want but there are always going to be lunatics with guns out there. These things happen at schools more than movie theaters. Should I not send my kids to school as well? Don't be stupid.

Draiman's right on this one. Responsible parents can't eliminate dangers of the world to their children but they can minimize the risks by being responsible parents.

Draiman is talking about infants, read what he said again. INFANTS.

David is 100% right on this subject. To many adults are just to selfish and don't put the needs of their children first - and one of those needs is making sure a child of 6 is in bed at a descent hour. Secondly, with lots of drunks out that late, its not responsible unless absolutely necessary (and it is some times).

I took my kid (who is 15) to Mayhem a couple of weeks ago and I saw tons of kids under 5 years old there with their parents. I'm sorry, a concert like that is no place for small children - it was really hot, lots of pot was being smoked, it was very crowded, and Slayer/Slipknot are not really bands for little kids. Most of those young kids did not look like they were having a good time. I also don't think loud concerts are good for small children's ears. I can explain lyrical concepts and the bad behavior of idiotic adults to my kid who is old enough to understand what's going on. And I had ear plugs in case we needed them.

Saw him on That Metal Show the other night, I'm not a fan of Disturbed really, but I enjoyed the interview with him, seems to be an intelligent guy.

Draiman is an idiot. For some reason he doesn't seem to understand that kids like superheroes who can be a source of character inspiration as well as exploring ethics and values (in an exaggerated cinematic form of course). He has no business questioning their parenting, I'm sure being the tool that he is I'll be surprised if his kid turns out ok. That said, the kids in the theater had every right to be there, the gun touting guy didn't. The end.

He's talking about parents taking small children to films (OR EVEN JUST OUT) after midnight. Simple, stop trying to read more into it. I think reading comprehension is lower than ever, especially on BM. Now wonder they are going to videos, you all are a bunch of fucking morons.

Small children should be at home, in bed. End of story. My dad used to tell me, nothing good ever happens after midnight. As an adult, I know this to be true. Drunk driving, crime, assault - all can happy any time, more likely to happen late at night.

Maybe most of you should stop smoking weed, getting drunk, and actually try to do something with your life.

This is great, lets blame the parents for taking their kid to the movies. Because everybody knows that a shooting like this cannot happen at any other time of the day. I have brought my kid to midnight showings of spiderman years ago. I guess this douche has stopped some of his concerts in the past when he saw a young kid with his parents in the audience. These parents are dealing with the loss of there child and i would be that they regret taking her but leave it to this asshole to come out pointing a finger. Go fuck yourself.

Maybe parents dont expect it might happen to them, but if you are very protective parents to ur children late night is not safe to them. Well, no one can tell when and where a psycho strikes. Pray before you leave from your home is better.

Can't stand when they take their loud kids to the theater period. If they can't behave they should be kicked out and if its a little baby or babies than you shouldn't even bring them to theaters because if its a loud movie. Theater is supposed to be a place where you enjoy the movie and its quiet except for the screen and whisper is fine too.

No one knows when a nutjob is going to come into a place like this but if the child can be quiet during the movie instead of being loud and bothering other goers in the theater I don't care they can stay but I still agree with Draiman no latenight showings should be allowed but I also think if all they do is make noise it's a waste of peoples money. Look at it as it is being disrespectful towards others in the theater. Of course what happened in Aurora can happen anywhere at anytime but it just happened to be that time that this asshole decided to hurt and kill innocent people cause hes a failure in school. Boo hoo a lot of people tried stuff and failed what a punk he should be beaten in jail.

There's nothing inherently wrong with having your kids out late. A lot of kids enjoy being up late, especially during the summer months. When I was 6, I was staying up to 2 to 3 every morning. Had nothing to do with my parents (they were well asleep by then). It's just something I enjoyed.

We live in a 24 hour world, people's schedules are changing more than ever. And it isn't necessarily fair to judge those who aren't living by the "norm," because it's not anymore.

Sure, Batman might not be the ideal film for a 6 year old. But there is one big factor here... the parent was there with them. When I was growing up, I'd play violent games or watch violent movies. My parents also made me well aware that it wasn't real and I should never do anything like that in real life. Or they actually did some sort of parenting, ya know? As many children that have absentee parents these days, people should be happy when they see parents spending time with their child.

As for the 4 month old that was at the showing, obviously there are better places for a baby of that age. The most valid point was the hearing damage it could potentially cause. Beyond that, there are responsible methods of bringing such a young child to a show (or anywhere that quiet is desired). Simply sit as close to the exit as possible. If they awaken (4 months old sleep a LOT and through a lot), simply exit the theater and tend to them. I've had to use this method with my baby at a funeral before. I sat next to the exit, when he cried, I was outta there.

The babysitter issue. Maybe they had one lined up but they backed out? Or maybe they didn't have anyone who could watch them. Sure there are people you can hire, but honestly, I would NEVER hire anyone I didn't know to watch my baby.

Yes, parenting is a sacrifice and sometimes you just gotta get over not doing things. But you also don't have to be constantly tied down and never getting to things. It's a quick way to drive yourself crazy when you have no outlets.

Oh, and Drainman, I'll remember your comments next time I happen to see you perform live. The next time you bring up a little girl on stage and have her sing along. Cause, ya know, rock concerts are the perfect place for children. What, with all the vulgar language, dark lyrical content, weed smoke, violent pits, and much higher decibels than the theater. Granted I'll give you credit, at least you told her to cover her ears during the "dirty" parts.

On the other hand, Ive never liked small kids at movies like this, especially so late. Having three daughters myself, I've never done it and don't really understand why someone would. The reasoning always seems so weak.

ever stop and think that maybe...just maybe...the whole motive of this crazed gunman to shoot up a movie theatre may have been because of his feeling on the direction our society is headed? Let me be clear: I am in NO way defending his actions and I am just as upset about all of this as the next person but maybe he did this because of his complete loathing of pop culture. Think about it. We all make this big hoorah over a movie that people wait in line for many hrs to see...we let our 6 yr old kids and infants into the movie theatre in the middle of the night for our own selfish wants (not even needs)...our young ones are learning about the perversions of sex - heterosexual and homosexual, drugs, etc. younger than they ever have before, disrespect runs rampant, ingratefulness, weakness, judgementalism, OWS BS,.....society in general is not getting wiser. We're getting stupider and we're allowing it to happen. Kids don't respect parents anymore. Nothing's shocking anymore. We put our kids on any drugs we can put them on so they'll pay attention....We're addicted to FB and drama on reality TV and I can't even turn on fuckin' ESPN without there being some story about some fuckwad athlete getting in trouble when all I WANTED WAS THE FUCKING SCORE TO THE GAME!!!! Maybe it's been this way all along and I just grew the fuck up but we've got major problems in this country socially and otherwise....This guy may have just been trying to make that statement...not that he was in any way justified in his actions but I guess we'll find out why he did it soon enough....in the meantime...turn off the radio...turn off the TV

the point he was trying to make has nothing to do with potential danger but the fact you would take kids that young to a movie that late at night and to see a violent one at that. most people go the movies to enjoy a night out without having to deal with whiny brats like 6 year old kids and infants. they are kids and can't help they act the way they do but you as an adult should no better than to drag them to them and spoil a night out for others.

I mean, yeah he's right, but that's not the issue, the issue was that there was a nutjob with a gun at a movie theater. A lot could happen at a late night movie showing, true, but I'm pretty sure the parents of that kid didn't expect THAT to happen. Feel like he's laying the blame on the wrong person on this one, or at least making an issue out of something that isn't as prevalent to the real situation at hand.

Parenting doesn't exist anymore. Haven't you heard? Kids now learn "discipline" through their "parent's" baby books, TV, media and computers.

If I ever get married, the day my wife even touches a baby book, aside from pregnancy, I'm filing for divorce.

many of you morons are missing the fucking point. It's very easy to understand, simpletons. Children should be put to bed at a reasonable hour. Period. It's a no fucking brainer that one should not take their 6 year old to a midnight screening of a violent fantasy "cartoon" that's not animated or a goddamn cartoon, for that matter. The whole situation smacks of a more prevalent problem in society today: selfish parents doing whatever they want, whenever they want and dragging their children with them because they're the self-important ones not thinking about their child's best interest.

DD is right. I'm a parent of a 5yo and an 8yo. I'm a pretty easy going parent. My kids get to do stuff and see stuff that many parents would forbid their kids from doing. That being said, I've seen the first two Batman movies and taking a 6yo to Batman (regardless of what time of day or night it is playing) is fucking ridiculous. Those movies are way over the head of a 6yo and it wold scare the fuck out of them.
