IRON MAIDEN Singer To 'Fan': 'You've Been Texting For The Last Three Songs! You're A Wanker!' - July 21, 2012
Fan-filmed video footage of IRON MAIDEN's July 19 concert at Klipsch Music Center in Indianapolis, Indiana can be seen below.

During the opening notes of "Wasted Years", IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson can be heard addressing a fan in the audience: "Oh, for fuck's sake, the guy with the bald head in the white shirt, you've been texting for the last three fucking songs! You're a wanker!"

The band's setlist was as follows:

01. Moonchild
02. Can I Play With Madness
03. The Prisoner
04. 2 Minutes To Midnight
05. Afraid To Shoot Strangers
06. The Trooper
07. The Number Of The Beast
08. Phantom Of The Opera
09. Run To The Hills
10. Wasted Years
11. Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
12. The Clairvoyant
13. Fear Of The Dark
14. Iron Maiden

Encore:

15. Aces High
16. The Evil That Men Do
17. Running Free

The 34-date "Maiden England" tour is IRON MAIDEN's most extensive visit to North America for many years and includes a number of other cities the band have not played in a very long time such as Atlanta, Milwaukee, Buffalo, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City and Sacramento, and places like Sarnia (Ontario, Canada) and Cadott, Wisconsin where they have never visited before. The tour is based on the band's "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son Tour", with a setlist almost exclusively from the 1980s featuring all the classic songs and hits. The same spectacular stage set as was used on the original 1988 tour has been recreated, complete with a magnificent light show, pyro and a newly reincarnated Eddie!

When asked by The Aquarian Weekly what the reason was behind choosing a setlist like that of the famous 1988 excursion, 7th Tour Of A 7th Tour, IRON MAIDEN guitarist Adrian Smith said, "Well, we just thought it'd be fun to revisit that period in time — there were some good songs there. It's just great revisiting some of the songs we haven't played for a long while. It keeps us fresh and it's just, you know, we got a lot of new fans coming on board now, a lot of younger fans who probably never saw or were around when we did that tour. That's one factor of it for us revisiting that time and I think there's some good songs from that period, so it's fun to do."

On the topic of how this tour differs from those in the recent years, Adrian said, "Well, this is a new set; we haven't taken the stage set out, for example, so it's a new stage set. We got new effects. I think it's going to be actually more spectacular than the original tour and probably, technically, you got more stuff now to put into a live show in terms of lighting and that, which will make it quite spectacular, so I think this is going to be pretty special, this tour. What with the songs, we love playing these songs, and with the stage set and effects and of course we got Eddie, he's back, so it should be fun."

The extraordinary and legendary ALICE COOPER is IRON MAIDEN's very special guest on all shows up to July 21. After that date, special guest will be COHEED AND CAMBRIA, the inspiring, cutting-edge band from New York.

Watch out Bruce. Calling out a fan didn't work so well for Geoff Tate. Haha

You know, I had similar thoughts when I saw Iron Maiden a few days ago, and Bruce called out the audience. He used the word "pathetic" at one point when they didn't cheer loudly enough, and made an obscene gesture another time when they didn't cheer loudly enough on command.

I'd say Bruce gets a pass because he works hard to deliver a great show, and still has singing talent which he maintains. Geoff Taint doesn't do any of those things any more, and we will see now Queensryche fans support Wilton, Rockenfield, and Jackson instead of him.

I was there and heard it and thought it was pretty funny. Every damn show I go to now there are always a bunch of people on their phones all night and its pretty much always facebook. I've never been to that site but I know what it looks like and I don't understand it.

I see people posting "oh my god this is my favorite song" and such nonsense and all I can think is well put the damned phone away and watch the show. People are stupid.

They really should drop Fear of the Dark for a while. I'd also drop The Clairvoyant but it makes sense to have it on this tour. But they easily could have gotten away with dropping FotD and putting Infinite Dreams somewhere in the set.

Not quite sure how this stage set is more spectacular than the original... it was pretty damn grand back on the original tour. Then again, I'm still just bitter that Darien Lake couldn't accommodate both rising Eddies, so we only got one during "Iron Maiden."

New song from the 17th album
New song from the 16th album
El Dorado
The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg
Dance Of Death
Blood Brothers
The Clansman
Sign Of The Cross
Fear Of The Dark
Bring Your Daughter...To The Slaughter
The Evil That Men Do
Wasted Years
Aces High

I know you can get set lists online, but I like capturing it in real time for whatever reason. But I've wondered what a band's reactions are to someone using a phone. And if I text during a show it's to communicate with friends I might have who are somewhere else at the show, to talk about the show. So at least I've got a good excuse for texting!

Yeah, typing out the set list is very important to enjoying a show. As is texting friends.

However, you could try what I've always done, enjoy the gig, realise that documenting the setlist is not important, and wait until after the show to share the excitement and discussion about the whole show with your friends.

I know, life's difficult, and you have a good excuse....

Hmm, how interesting that you think my taking 5 seconds to write down a key word in the song and texting with friends a couple of times during the show somehow hampers my ability to enjoy the show and have an amazing time. How gifted I must be to be able to multitask so rigorously while you have to expend so much energy just to follow the lyrics without getting confused.

When I went to see Soundgarden last year, some jackass behind me had to yap, yap, yap through the show. I heard him more than the band.

When I turned around to tell him to shut up, I saw that he had his back turned to the stage while talking with his friends. I finally said "do you plan on talking through the whole show?" He looked surprised somebody called him out. He zipped it for a few songs then started up again. I told him to shut up again and then he finally left.

Why bother going to a show if you're not even going to watch it?

Bruce has this problem... he lets himself get affected by the most irrelevant things. And he cares! Can't never be the big man there and always comes across as a big spoiled crybaby. I can't picture Hetfield, Lemmy, Halford taking their time to adress a specific kid in the crowd because he's texting! Can you imagine how ridicule that would be?

that is probably not the case but there is a chance it could be and if it was me at a show and i was texting it would only be because of an emergency and if Bruce or anyone called me a wanker i'd walk up to the stage, grab a mic and fill him in on exactly everything going on.....then call him a wanker.

Last tuesday I was at The Cult concert and there was a guy recording the whole thing with is hand up kind of interfering people's sight from behind when suddenly a bottle of water hits his hand and the camera went out. Again, after picking it up the same jerk continues to film the concert and the people behind him started boooing; nothing. After 1-2 minutes aprox. a group of maybe 5-6 guys and 1 girl approached him to stop doing that, or asking him to go record somewhere else because appart for being a tall guy, with his hand up was making it hard for people to watch and enjoy the concert; never seen the guy again the whole show. Why going to a concert if you're not going to see it?

First, I didn't say anything to the guy since he wasn't interfering my sight although I was very close to the whole situation, but of course I'm with the people who talked to him. Second, they told him to go and record somewhere else or stop to doing so in front of them. Finally, if you think that people who didn't pay for a ticket have more right to see the concert instead the ones who actually pay you must be out of your mind.

I find it annoying too, but have been guilty of it too. My camera is smaller than the palm of my hand, as are most. Its not like people are holding up some 2 foot cimematic movie camera. It blocks as much space as someone who has their hands up. Should people keep their hands at their sides at all times during a show?

at a concert in LA recently a guy asked me what time it was and I told him I don't 't wear a watch. He laughed because he doesn't either. I told him I also don't bring a phone with me, neither does he. We both laughed again and figured we were the only two people at the show like this. I am at the show to experience, not to worry what time it is or who is trying to get a hold of me.

Sad thing, I had a mid pavilion ticket. People looked at me weird for being exited to see the band and singing every word to all the songs. I wasn't going to let them ruin my experience.

I really don't care one way or another if some people want to spend every waking breath documenting their lives online, but in this particular case - good for Bruce! I was not fortunate enough to be in town for this show, which is pretty damn frustrating seeing as it's the first time they've been in Indy since 2005, and would have happily traded spots with said fucker to enjoy every last second of their set.

*Cheers* to all of you who did make it out. Indianapolis is passed over too often by some of the bigger metal bands & good attendance means a lot these days.

If you're talking about Black Ice, then that was *every* section, at least in the US. The cheap seats cost just as much as front row center.

Ya know, I think there's something to this. I've noticed that while the rest of the world gets tours after a new album has come out with tons of new songs, we always get a greatest hits deal with one new song that's been released a few weeks before the start of the tour. It's happened a number of times, 1st with Dance of Death, and recently with The Final Frontier. And they only played a couple of US dates for A Matter of Life and Death, and when they toured for The Early Years DVD, they attached themselves to Ozzfest which meant they couldn't play the same lengthy sets as they did everywhere else (granted, the '05 tour was more of a business decision: exposure to lots of different people at a festival, part of the touring package, etc.).

Come on now. They play where they sell the most tickets, and that ain't the US. You would do the same thing.

After the boos and complaining I had to hear after they played A Matter of Life and Death in its entirety a few years ago, I'm not surprised Iron Maiden would continue to consider the US to be a secondary market for them.

Shows are not cheap these days. If you pay, you aughta be able to see the show. Common sense dictates you don't stick a big fat arm with a camera on the end of it up into the air and block peoples view so you can post the shit on youtube for people who didn't pay to see the show in person.

Bruce does seem to dislike america and americans. He's seen a lot of the world - we all generalize. For example, I think british women are mostly ugly

as hell. Anyways, Bruce might be sore still because Motley Crue guy screwed his girl. He probably thinks Motley Crue = American. Maybe he's right in part

Every show that happens and you go to. There are thousands of people on their damn phones. Sometimes the entire show. Seen it all too much, Taking pics , texting , Facebooking , Using Twitter etc. It is so sickening! You spend top dollars to see your favorite bands perform live. Next time Leave the stupid device home, and support the bands by getting a T-shirt or CD. Bunch of clueless idiots swear to God most people are!

The only true wanker that night was Bruce fucking Dickinson. What a tired, old queen.

*Always* has to bitch and moan about something, someone, and pretend he's so high and mighty when in reality, he's just a frustrated, tired, old queen. I'm starting to believe Sharon Osbourne when she called him out - the man *constantly* has beef with someone! What, a random guy in the audience spends his time texting? What if it was an emergency, you French piece of crap? Why do you care if he spends the whole show texting? You have the smelly, mentally-challenged hordes of orcs chanting your silly band's name, and you get worked up over one guy texting in the audience. *YOU'RE A TIRED, OLD QUEEN*.
I'm glad Nikki Sixx caused you grief, I'm glad Sharon Osbourne pelted your scrawny ass with eggs, and I'll be very glad when one of these days, someone whom you've offended and annoyed beyond tolerance, finally knocks your fucking teeth in. You deserve it.

I'm pointing out how ridicule and lowering to self is to adress one specific member of the crowd. That was directed to a whole crowd FILMING the concert with cellphone cameras, not ONE specific kid. And he ASKED them to do it, no insults involved.

Sontaron

You didn't understand the point of my comment. The point isn't if Lemmy would or not call someone a wanker. Is the self lowering attitude of individually adressing someone in a crowd to do so.

We can now photograph and take video of live performances, it's just the way things are. I saw Maiden twice on this tour and I took pictures and video with my phone during both shows. I made sure I was not interrupting anyone's view while I did so. I sang along to every song, screamed all night, and had a great time. If I want to video a bit of the performance for myself and I don't interrupt anyone around me then what is the big deal? I saw the first show in Charlotte and another in Virginia and each was just packed and everyone was super into the show. However, Bruce had some shitty remarks about the crowd
in Virginia and about the 4th of July which were absolutely unnecessary. He brings this stuff on himself and insults the people paying his way through life. I love Maiden but I felt after the remarks he made during the Virginia show that Bruce Dickinson can go fuck himself! He has crowds of 15k+ and he singles out one guy...at this point in his career you would think he would be a bit more professional.

As much as I like Bruce and admire his abilities...he's a twat and sounds like a control freak!

The whole point of texting is to send messages without bothering the people around you with your loud talking over the bloody phone. So the bloke couldn't have been causing a fuss.
He didn't need to be called out, let alone be called a wanker in front of thousands of people.

You got a whole arena to focus your attention on Bruce so keep looking about and stop focusing on one individual.

I think its perfectly fine to record the concert as long its not full songs so its bootlegging...when I was at a Megadeth concert I took about 10 video clips no longer than a minute, just to remember the good time I had, bring it home and show my friends etc. I didnt want to block anyones view so I kept it under a minute recording

Fan paid for the show. If Bruce could actually see him then he paid about $100 tax and fees in for his ticket. If you pay $100 for a ticket and the singer of the headlining band notices that you've spent the whole show with your head down texting, then you're a jackass and need to be learned.

Morons are way to buried in their phones, good on Bruce for calling this bullshit out.

Bruce is 100% correct. I bet the people doing this are young people. You kids need to learn how to enjoy a show. Sitting on your phone is no way to enjoy a show. If you gonna do that at least buy the cheap seats. Let a real fan of the band and music be up front to take it all in.

Taking some pictures is one thing but staring at your phone, you should have just stayed home. You have barely any idea of whats going on onstage anyways.

Like the hypocritical quip about the guy smoking a joint (watched live after death lately asshole?) a couple years back. I wonder how Nicko can be a born again christian and be in a band with a Thelema/OTO member. And I wonder how high ranking Bruce is in the occult orders..I dare someone to ask him about that!

is going to have to get with the times here, as much as he thinks he can control the entire audience. Do you know that movie theaters are seriously considering reserving one theater in each multiplex as a "texting allowed" theater? This is what the kids want to do, they multitask all day long.

I'm with you all on the "why do you pay $100+ to text thru the whole concert" comments, but that's them and we are different. Maybe concert venues need to reserve a texting section, and those people who want to text with their friends the whole time can sit there. Way at the back of the venue, naturally, since they aren't going to watch the show anyway.

Legenday: Thats a stupid response. So your saying that a family member who got in an accident is important enough to text about but not leave the seating area.

If its something serious you would leave the show and at least go out to the concourse area and make a phone call. Give me a break. I go to a ton of shows a year and I see people texting away at most of them believe you me there not texting about a family member in the hospital.

And what's up with the people in here? Texting is a disease? Leave your basement for once and get friends, maybe then you'd understand. Communication evolves all the time, this is the current step in it's evolution.
