COREY TAYLOR Says PAUL GRAY's Musical Contributions To SLIPKNOT Were 'Almost Orchestral' - July 21, 2012
This past week, Zane Lowe of U.K.'s BBC Radio 1 conducted an interview with singer SLIPKNOT/STONE SOUR singer Corey Taylor. You can now listen to the chat in the YouTube clip below.

SLIPKNOT's current stint on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour is the band's first U.S. trek since the May 2010 death of bassist Paul Gray.

When asked what is the one massive thing that Paul took with him from the band when he died, Corey said, "There's a huge void that has to be filled musically. He brought something so different to what we do. I mean, Joey [Jordison, drums] is an amazing writer. Mick [Thomson, guitar] is a great writer; he comes up with amazing riffs. I can kind of hold my own with these guys. Clown [percussion] has a brilliant mind for the crazier stuff, but he also has a great idea of what the vibe should be. Jim [Root, guitar] writes incredible riffs. There was something so different about what Paul brought to the band. Not only could he write these great riffs — these super-heavy, drudgy riffs — but he has such a great vision for melody. I mean, a lot of the stuff that he wrote had so many different layers to it, it was almost orchestral. And that is gonna be hard to fill, because it was just so different. It comes along once in a generation."

Commenting on SLIPKNOT's decision to carry on as a band following Gray's passing, Taylor said, "The thing that people don't understand is that we're so different that when we're at home, we don't really hang out a lot. I mean, some of us do. Obviously, I see Jim all the time, 'cause I'm in the other band with him, I see Clown. I talk to [Chris] Fehn a lot, I talk to Sid [Wilson]. But for the most part, we're so different that we never hang out. But then we go on the road, killing [ourselves] every night, and the only person who's gonna understand is someone who's there. So we're very tight as a family. Does that mean we're all bunking together, like 'Real World'-style, like MTV? No. Not at all. 'Cause we'd kill each other within 10 seconds. But that bond will never be broken."

Following the end of the Mayhem tour, the group will headline Knotfest, two festival dates put together by the band itself on August 17 in Council Bluffs, Iowa and August 18 in Somerset, Wisconsin.

SLIPKNOT will tentatively enter the studio sometime in 2013 to begin recording its fifth album. In the meantime, a greatest-hits collection called "Antennas To Hell" arrives on July 24.

Funny definition of "almost"... or "orchestral"... or more likely, both.

This band hit over 10 years ago, that would make Slipknot fans in their early 20's, why have they known grown up and realized that clowns are not funny at 25?

What a complete crock of shit. There's not a single thing orchestral about Slipcock. The band has a handful of decent songs. The majority of which were on Subliminal Verses. The rest of the shit is just nonsensical noise. This band is pure gimmick and nothing else. Drop the tards that bang on beer kegs, the DJ and drop the stupid fucking masks. Everyone already knows what these assclowns look like anyway. Then I might......Might take them half seriously, if they can write decent music without it sounding like a bunch of fucking noise.

Corey: "Wow Paul, that's almost orchestral. You know what this needs over it? A bunch of violent screaming and folks hitting beer kegs with baseball bats!"

Ever the visionary, that Corey Taylor...

Orchestral huh? For claiming to be so dependent on Paul Gray's musical input, sounds like Slipknot didn't use any of it.

No Corey, Jon Lord brought an orchestral style to his writing. Paul Gray was just the bass player in a shitty band who overdosed to get away from you and Clown

but you couldn't even hear the bass on the albums. He brought nothing to the band, he was a mediocre bass player.

A lot of bass players play regular guitar so he could've contributed riffs or even drum and lyric ideas.

If you were to believe this douche and the other losers in his band, then Paul Gray was the most important musician to have ever lived.

The guy was a junkie and your band has always sucked. Get the fuck over it already.

Yes, Slipknot and the London Philharmonic Orchestra are very close in terms of being orchestral.

< STOP SUCKING THE DEAD MAN'S BALLS >

Everyone's had enough of hearing about your inability to get over it.

Yes, he was talented - we get get it - I had a best friend who was almost a genius musically. In 2008 he died of an overdose. I was devastated for a couple of months, but with time I let go. I feel lucky to have had this person in my life.
Release an album in his name, or just break the fuck up already.
You people are not the first to have a best friend die. Youve gotta wake up.
I look back at any band in the past that went through the same thing.
Take an hiatus. Whats the deal? Take a 10 year hiatus for all we care. Just calm the fuck down.
You are turning out to be one of the most pathetic metal bands in metal history.

You may now peel Paul's cold, dead balls off of your chin. Thank you and please go away -and take that clown with you. Also, your band has always been nothing but cocophonous drivel with a lousy, drug-addled bassist.
