SLAYER Frontman 'Can't Wait' For JEFF HANNEMAN To Come Back - July 19, 2012
SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya recently spoke to Gary Graff of Billboard.com about the band's plans for the remainder of the year after it wraps its run on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival in early August. "We'll probably get together and start writing together and start making a new album," he said. "I think after [Mayhem] we'll just go back to the drawing board and take a look at what we've got and start putting it together. These days we're a bit more like, 'Let's see what comes out.' We don't chomp at the bit like we did in the early days. You just sort of have to let it happen and see what the end result is, and hopefully we'll like it...Everything we've done as a band has been like that — 'Wow, let's do it.' We know the outcome is going to be good."

Regarding the status of guitarist Jeff Hanneman — who in January 2011 contracted necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, and has been undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and intense rehab since — Araya said, "Jeff's had a long ordeal. He's working on his playing ability, and that's something that's gonna take some time. He's working on strengthening his arm and his ability to play. He can play, but it's not for an extended period of time. Like anything else when you have some kind of not only muscle damage but nerve damage, it takes a bit for a lot of your functions to come back. They're not going to come back and easy and quick."

He added, "On this [latest tour] more than others it's dawned on me that he's not there. The audiences have been very favorable, capacity crowds, really good. I just kind of look out and think, 'Jeff, God, where are you? You worked 30 years for this. You should be here.' He should be enjoying this part of his career. I can't wait for him to (be back)."

EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt is filling in for Hanneman on SLAYER's summer tour, which kicked off at the end of May at All Tomorrow's Parties in England.

Tom is cool unlike Kerry King, jealous jackass!
He wants Jeff to stay out of the band cause he's far superior than him and overshadowed him for decades.

Jeff Hanneman >> Kerry King

This is you. I've been listening since 1984 and have perhaps a better appreciation for the swings within the band's sphere of influence.

The fact is, Jeff has been mailing in his live performances for at least 7 years and hasn't written a single solid solo in the same amount of time nor has he been a stellar rhythm guitarist. It's obvious he is suffering from an addiction of some sort, he's not the same Jeff as the 1990s. Heroin or pills or whatever, I hope he can sort his shit out and start writing killer tunes again if not start playing guitar like he meant it.

Kerry is the more inventive of the two but you're right, no one would ever accuse KK or JH of being amongst metal's foremost soloists.

maybe not to you, but I gotta disagree. They created a whole new approach to soloing. while everybody else was trying to copy Van Halen, Randy Rhodes, and Don Dokken, Slayer added some of the craziest shit to metal soloing, and it really helped develop the sound of thrash. Making crazy dive bombs that EVH would be proud of , chaotic runs that should never work on paper seemed to kick everybody's ass on Reign in Blood. Look at Vader, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Nile and a lot of other bands and how they solo. I don't want to imagine what they would sound like without Slayer. Maybe not what a bunch of nerds would call remarkable, but to a lot of bands, influential? You fucking bet, and both Jeff and KK had everything to do with that.

between Araya's & King's comments. If you were Hanneman who would you call your friend between the two?

Anyway...This shouldn't be a war between King & Hanneman by the fans...But it is because Kerry speaks that way. Sad.

Tom and Jeff are former pill popping buddies, KK only drinks afaik, he's basically straight edge except for alcohol I guess. Even in 1990 I remember interviews with Slayer where Kerry said he & Jeff don't speak outside of the studio or on tour.

Tom is an awesome guy.

Kerry seems to be too caught up in putting forth this image of a badass who doesn't give a fuck about anything or anyone...

...which is pretty sad coming from a guy who's gonna be 50 in a few years.

No one thinks you're evil or dangerous anymore, Kerry. You can drop the tough guy shtick and act like a human being with actual emotions.

ALSO, I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S GARY THAT HAS LIT A FIRE UNDER THIS BANDS ASS OR WHAT, BUT THEIR MAYHEM PERFORMANCE WAS THE BEST I'VE SEEN IN CLOSE TO 5 YEARS.

I miss Jeff. He has written every single one of my favorite Slayer songs. I can't think of a single great song written solely by Kerry.
Angel of death, Raining blood, South of heaven, War ensamble, Seasons in the abyss... all Hanneman. Kerry is the on who writes the unispired fillers on the albums... I do not want a Slayer album written only by Kerry!

I've been listening to Slayer since 1986 and unfortunately I have to agree with you about Jeff no longer being the same Jeff as far as playing goes. I don't know what the reason is but most of his recent solos were really uninspired and his live performances were much worse than a few years before.

I've always considered you as the #1 thrash metal frontman & a very classy guy. You showed it to us all yet again. In this insane world, Tom is one of the most sane & down-to-earth guys that I know of.

Btw: A KICK-FUCKING-ASS performance at Provinssirock, Finland on June 17th from Slayer and from Tom. My hometown gig.

Plus: Top-of-the-line points to Gary Holt for doing a massive job on Jeff's behalf. Gary is a stone-cold professional who does his damnedest best for this band, his friends & colleagues, helping them to fulfill their touring commitments with success & credibility - the end result is a great show for us fans.

Jeff's playing being less good than in the nineties doesn't necessarily mean he's got addiction problems. That's quite a strong hypothesis. Kirk Hammett also couldn't play some of his solos for years before he more or less got his shit back together lately. I reckon he hadn't been on drugs but just lazy.

What rspychacz said.

Slayer's solo's are great and i really like them alot. Either by Jeff or Kerry.
Sure they are no Richie Blackmore or a Joe Satrianni but that's not the fucking point!
Their way of playing solo's is part of the Slayer sounds since Show No Mercy and i love them for it!

If fans do not understand this, they had never understood Slayer!

i never really got into these guys much. I did see them with Testament, and Megadeth a few years back. It was a great show made me appreciate them more. Now as for the soloing after awhile 30 years you tend to run out of solo ideas. Im not a huge fan but give them a break their out there still trying to give you guys music when the new heavy metal scene sucks balls.

If im not mistaken, Jeff is the punk rock backbone of slayer and always has been. Ive never looked at slayer as prog rock or virtuoso musicianship. Its fast heavy music. And has always atracted punk rockers much like Motorhead. Kerry king to my mind is a blowhard windbag. Sustaining the core integrity of your band is worth something.

He is right. Jeff is better than Carrie Queen. While Jeff actually puts his fingers onto the guitar...Carrie is jacking off the whammy bar. Over and over and over. Miss Queen is a great jacker, but Jeff can actually play guitar.

So it's true! Jeff is better than Miss Carrie Queen.

KK just wants to see his own name dominate the writing credits. Ararya hardly even gets a look in anymore. Diabolus is not by far their worst album. Christ Illusion is. it sounds like retread all the way, Even the Hanneman songs do. God Htes Us All is just KK trying very hard to be Anselmo. It didn't convince me. KK doesn't like South of Heaven. I bet it's because he didn't write much of it. It's their absolute best record IMO

I've seen Slayer 9 times since the Divine World tour and each time, KK was the most faithful to the album version. I'm not bashing Jeff cause I like work but live he's sloppier than KK and does not play his solos exactly as on the album.

To YYYYYY, to each his own taste. While I consider South Of Heaven one of their best song, I think the album as a whole is inferior to Reign In Blood, Seasons, GHUA and World Painted Blood. I'm not sold on Dissident Agressor and Live Undead. The best thing about SOH is the production that, to me, is better than SITA's production.

I would really like the next album to be about 50-50 music King and Hanneman, lyrics 33-33-33 Araya-Hanneman-King and the producer Dave Sardy (Undisputed Attitude) with Andy Wallace mixing the end result...

What the fuck is wrong with you people?

Are you Slayer fans, or you're only Jeff/Kerry worshipers?

This band it's where it is because every single member of it broke his back to bring it there. It's a miracle that they kept the original lineup for so long.

So stop with the bullshit and enjoy the mighty SLAYER!
