MARK TREMONTI: Some Of My Favorite Riffs Of All Time Are On SLAYER's Song 'Raining Blood' - July 19, 2012
In a recent interview with AOL's Noisecreep, ALTER BRIDGE and CREED guitarist Mark Tremonti was asked what he listened to as a kid and what helped shape him musically. "The first record that really made me a music fanatic was METALLICA's 'Master Of Puppets'," he said. "That's probably my favorite record of all time. From there I searched for the heaviest, darkest, meanest sounding stuff I could find. I grew up in Detroit and my friends listened to SLAYER and TESTAMENT — I got into punk, too, like BLACK FLAG and MINISTRY. And I got really into black metal. I got into CELTIC FROST, KING DIAMOND and MERCYFUL FATE. I loved that stuff. I'd have to control the volume though so I'd turn it down when they said 'praise Satan' or whatever to keep my parents from taking my records away. [laughs]"

When asked if there were there specific metal guitarists that influenced him and his riffs, Mark said. "[METALLICA's] James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, for sure. That down stroke thing they do is one of my core sounds — my rhythm playing is very rooted in the METALLICA-based style. And SLAYER's approach, too. Some of my favorite riffs of all time are on SLAYER's song 'Raining Blood' and that really inspired me to write man of the menacing metal riffs that I have over the years. That's really what turned me on when I was younger, that kind of music."

Tremonti's debut solo album, "All I Was", was released on July 17 via Fret 12 Records, a company Mark started with his brother, Daniel Tremonti, and Tom Stanley.

With two bands and a solo career, The Pulse Of Radio asked Tremonti how he knows which project the songs he writes are best suited for. "I've just gotten this filter, this intuition that tells me what songs go to which band, and with my solo stuff, the rhythm section is so different from the other bands, I think it really stands apart," he said. "I think it's a little more aggressive than both the other bands, but you just have to hear it, I guess."

His solo band, also billed TREMONTI, features ALTER BRIDGE and CREED bassist Brian Marshall in the lineup along with guitarist Eric Friedman and drummer Garrett Whitlock.

that wasn't bad or if i may say so that was very very good indeed! Very nice rhythm section, excellent guitars and very very good vocals!
And yes, if you listen to the song BEFORE you comment, you'll hear his influences too...
Pretty nice!

If you don't believe him, listen to that riff he's playing here at 2:50 :

It doesn't sound as Slayerish on the album though (because of modern rock production)

Also, check out the track called Wish you Well. You may be surprised it's coming from the Creed guy, believe me.

I listened to the track and yes, it does have an aggressive riff or two, but for the most part the tune is pretty commercial in my eyes. Yeah - you can hear a little bit of his influences. Whatever. None of this matters. If this is what his music sounds like, it's not for me.

preceding riff on Postmortem is a bit more menacing, in my opinion.

Reign in Blood still sounds fresh to this day.

My ex-girlfriend took me to see Alter Bridge do an in-store gig and signing...not my cup of tea, but she he had huge tits. I met this guy and he commented on my Exodus shirt, we chatted about Toxic Waltz etc...decent guy, even if Creed were wank.

Tremonti is an excellent guitarist actually.

It's just too bad he ended up getting stuck with that bogus Christian poseur, Stapp.

We met him at NAMM & he was totally genuine. Totally grateful & yes, he can play. It's like how Grohl knows his Metal but plays more commercially accessible music. As far as Slayer..."Hell Awaits"!!! It's scary Thrash! Listening to that with Kill Em All, Seven Churches, The Ultra Violence & Bonded By Blood ...they all have that (things can go wrong any second) vibe but "Hell Awaits" is evil-ambient & littered with crazy-killer riffs! \m/\m/

Seven Churches and Bonded By Blood are the most evil mo. Hell Awaits is more brutal but slightly less mysterious.

That said, Jeff Becerra, Paul Baloff, Tom Araya, Don Doty and James Hetfield were the best singers of that scene. The other singers were bad, which is why they never got anywhere.

He's a great guitarist. That's all that needs to be said about him really. Don't really love the solo stuff but I think he's pretty awesome and putting good riffs together with the AB crew. I think they're one of the best modern rock bands around.

Dont matter how cheezy some of Creed stuff was, I'm constantly getting goosebumps when I hear chorus, especially ending of What If song, shit it is heavy. I remember them playing it at some award show, closing it. Shit, it was so cool.
