THE GATHERING Singer: 'We Work Really Hard To Reinvent Ourselves All The Time' - July 18, 2012
Decibel magazine recently conducted an interview with vocalist Silje Wergeland of Dutch/Norwegian rockers THE GATHERING. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Decibel: How will "Disclosure" differ from "The West Pole"?

Silje Wergeland: It's fresher, braver, more confident and honest, deeper, newer.

Decibel: You released "Heroes For Ghosts" as a single a long while ago. Was it released to keep interest up? Usually, singles are album-lead material, but this time you pushed it out way early. Sort of unorthodox.

Silje Wergeland: Yes, you are right. We decided to not do it for any other reason than release it because we wanted to! The song is way too long for a "normal" single, but that didn't matter. We never released it to try to get it on radio or on TV. We know their limits of about three minutes to get airplay, and knew we'll never get there anyways. It was only marketed through our Facebook, Twitter and webpage, so very low key. THE GATHERING has its own label [Psychonaut], but we are not very business-focused. It is still all about the music and art. We were just so happy with it and wanted to share it with the world.

Decibel: What if anything particular inspires THE GATHERING at this point? You're on your 10th album now, so I'm wondering if it's more comfort that keeps the engine running or is the creative vision still strong?

Silje Wergeland: I can assure you that the creative vision is still the strongest part. We work really hard to reinvent ourselves all the time and not repeat "the old days." I think you can see it quite clearly on most of our older work that we are not a band that uses the same recipe on every new release. We always pay attention to "what's new" in the musical soundscape and try to make something we haven't done before. I think that inspires us the most.

But why not more hard rock or metal blended into their atmospheric music? They were so good when they rock out more...so much more energy and melodic catchiness. They haven't put out a full record that is listenable from front to back since If.then.else. Boring electronic music with hints of alternative rock just doesn't cut it. Sorry guys..but you need to turn up the volume and rock a bit more. PLEASE!!

interesting. I thought the heavy guitars on If_Then_Else were a complete distraction at times(e.g Saturnine), while they worked perfectly at others(Shot To Pieces, The Colorado Incident etc)

The last album needed heavier guitars though i felt, as it was essentially a throwback to 90's Gathering. 'Souvenirs' was just right because it was more of an 'art rock' album and i loved it.

I'm curious to hear the new record but i can't help but get the feeling their best days are long behind them.

in the late 90's imo. 'IF_Then_Else' could have sold really well in Europe if it was released through EMI or Universal i'm sure. The band were already big in Holland and Germany and i think there was real potential for crossover success at that point in time.

Century Media were not the right label for them after 'Nighttime Birds' i'm afraid, but i guess they were contractually obliged to stay or whatever.

Still, i think it was a missed opportunity either way you look at it. 'Mandylion' supposedly sold over 120,000 copies in the mid 90's, which was a shitload for an indie metal label then, but it's not much compared to metal bands with female vocalists that followed in their wake. The Gathering paved the way for all those bands and most of them were inferior yet many were also more successful.

I agree with you all pretty much. This does sound a lot more complex than the old material and I liked it more than I expected, although you shouldn't forget what made you popular in the first place look what happened to Theatre Of Tradgedy. I don't see a problem with having a couple more chunkier rock songs on an album to balance out this kind of song.

The whole premise was that they were going to go more rock or metal with the new singer. She's good, but no anneke. Good replacement...but if anneke was getting away from rocking out...then this was the chance the band needed. I talked with the drummer after a show just before anneke left..and he swore they were going heavier. They were only opening for lacuna coil which is ten percent as good a band as the gathering were in their good run. But lacuna rocks out. The gathering could have been huge with headlining spots if they had just mixed in more rock and less ambient ballad pop. Its a shame really. I feel that at least this was their chance to go back more to their roots...or at minimum go towards rock. Not easy listening. The last album had 3 good songs. I may not even buy this one..and I used to fucking worship this band.
