IRON MAIDEN Bassist To Release 'British Lion' Solo Album - July 18, 2012
Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) has announced the release of IRON MAIDEN founder Steve Harris' debut solo/side project album. Entitled "British Lion" and comprising ten songs that Steve and his collaborators have been working on for the past few years between IRON MAIDEN tours and releases, it is an album that will surprise and delight music fans the world over.

With a decidedly heavy rock-vibe this roaring debut paints with a full palette of sounds; brooding, melancholic, righteously indignant and exuberantly heavy. With Kevin Shirley at the mixing helm — whose credits include IRON MAIDEN as well as Led ZEPPELIN, JOURNEY and RUSH, among many others — this is an album to sink your teeth into.

From the growling riffage of opening salvo "This Is My God" to the heavy forlorn balladry of follow-up "Lost Worlds" which showcases Richard Taylor's soaring vocals, it's clear that "British Lion" is an altogether different beast from MAIDEN.

"Karma Killer", with its dirge-like muscularity, and "Us Against The World", with its massive chorus, demonstrates just how far "British Lion" has flexed Steve Harris' considerable musical muscle. Dovetailed with guitarist David Hawkins' positively gargantuan lyrical guitar melodies, it's a mere hors d'oeuvre ahead of the epic, riffing-feast of "The Chosen Ones", with its swaggering bravado.

"A World Without Heaven", at a breathtaking seven minutes and infused with progressive elements without ever teetering into self-indulgence illustrates perfectly these songsmiths' colossal abilities to create a mood and stay there. Supercharged by Steve Harris' inimitable style, there's an un-cynical vibe here that's as refreshing as it is out of place in today's all-too-categorized music industry.

And as far as the name "British Lion"; "I've always been proud to be British," explains Steve. "I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be. It's a massive part of being me. It's not like I'm flag-waving or trying to preach, this is not a political statement at all. It's like supporting your football team, where you come from. I just think it lends itself to some really strong imagery too, and to me it fits in with the sound."

With IRON MAIDEN, Steve Harris has become one of the most recognized and successful ambassadors for British music on the world stage. Having released 15 studio albums, sold over 85 million records worldwide and played more than two thousand gigs in 58 countries in the band's thirty-five year career, his appeal is truly global.

And now with "British Lion", Steve steps out from IRON MAIDEN's illustrious shadow to present a different side of his musical visions.

Due in the U.S. on September 25 via Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), "British Lion" will feature the following track listing:

01. This Is My God
02. Lost Worlds
03. Karma Killer
04. Us Against The World
05. The Chosen Ones
06. A World Without Heaven
07. Judas
08. Eyes Of The Young
09. These Are The Hands
10. The Lesson

Not at all, just look at the songwriting credits for any post-Di'Anno album and that should be obvious.

Never thought I'd see this happen... I'm glad it is happening, just never thought I'd see it since Arry is Maiden basically. Never thought he'd have material that didn't fit the Maiden mold. Looking forward to this.

Yeah, it seems he gets his inspiration from the Mike Portnoy School of Watching Movies:

Where Eagles Dare
The Lonlieness of the Long Distance Runner
Heaven Can Wait
The Evil That Men Do
Run Silent, Run Deep
From Here to Eternity
The Fugitive
Sign of the Cross
Lord of the Flies
Man on the Edge
The Longest Day

just to name a few...

No info on the line-up. If there are other musicians playing then it's not a true solo effort. I'd like to hear TRUE solo albums from artists who can write songs and lyrics, record them on all instruments, perform all the vocal, record/mix/master the whole thing. Now that would be a solo venture. Everything else is a guy getting no names to back his new 'solo band'.

First Foo Fighters album is all Dave Grohl.

He wrote all the songs before he even got into Nirvana, then set them aside not knowing if he'd ever do anything with them.

When Nirvana ended, he recorded the songs, played all the instruments himself, then got a deal and released it.

The album notes show a full band, but everyone was hired after he recorded the songs.

It's sold about 2 million copies to date.

Well considering how amazingly boring most of his writing for Maiden has been for the last 15 years I really hope this isn't the stuff that wasn't up to par.

Can't wait to see what the choruses will be like.

MAYBE LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE!!!
MAYBE LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE!!!
MAYBE LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE!!!
MAYBE LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE!!!

And don't tell me that's not representative of his writing, because it is.

Which is why this solo album will likely be better.

He has said in the past he follows a formula for Maiden. He doesn't have to do that for a solo album. He can take a lifetime of good ideas that didn't fit the Maiden formula and use them all on one solo album.

Well I wish he could use the formula for Maiden 1980-1988 when/if he writes a new Maiden album.

Then I will be a first day buyer again.

And kick out the dancing leprechaun Janick Gers

he has no idea what he's talking about if he says EVERY Maiden song has gallops. Simply not true.

alot of songs have gallops. I was just taking the piss out of maiden and harris. I just saw them live on july 4th and they're my favorite band. Unlike a lot of metal fans, i have a sense of humor. Most of the songs DO have that chord progression somewhere, so it was just satirical. I was pissed they're not playing Infinite Dreams and replaced it with AFTSS. I still wonder, if Harris will be TEMPTED to use that chord progression or not. Seems like left to his own devices (eg: X Factor) he likes to use it a lot lol

The first 2 were The X Factor and Virtual XI.

I think Adrian releasing the Primal Rock Rebellion CD and getting great reviews hurt Steve's ego. He probably thought that the focus of attention was not him any longer. I don't think that this was in his plans for all these years actually. He always said he'd never release a solo album anyway.

I believe this album will be a collection of The Angel And The Gamblers, Weekend Warriors, Gates Of Tomorrows etc... His more rock n roll stuff.
