OPETH Mainman Pays Tribute To JON LORD - July 18, 2012
Guitarist/vocalist Mikael Ã…kerfeldt of Swedish progressive metallers OPETH has released the following statement regarding the passing of former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord:

?"We're very saddened to hear about the passing of the great Jon Lord. Our condolences go out to his family and friends. He's obviously partly responsible for OPETH ever being formed, so we're in massive debt to him.

"Martin Mendez [OPETH bassist] and Martin Axenrot [OPETH drummer] obviously had the pleasure of working with [see video below], and playing with Lord, and both said it was such an amazing experience. He was a sheer musical genius. Axenrot even said that when he'd asked what bpm (beats per minute) a song was supposed to be in. Lord had said, 'Around 140 bpm,' and started clapping his hands in the desired beat. Axenrot checked with his metronome and sure enough, Lord was clapping in exactly 140 bpm!

"Jon Lord. We love you. Your music lives on and your memory will never fade."

Jon Lord died on Monday (July 16) at age 71 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Lord, who was known for his keyboard virtuosity and his reinvention of the Hammond B-3 organ sound, co-wrote such PURPLE classics as "Smoke On The Water" and "Child In Time", among others. Lord and drummer Ian Paice were the only original members to last through the band's initial run from 1968 to 1976. He was on board for their 1984 reunion and stayed on through to his 2002 retirement from the band, after which he's worked primarily in the classical field.

Over the course of his career, Lord also worked with the ARTWOODS, FLOWER POT MEN, PAICE, ASHTON AND LORD, WHITESNAKE and good friend and neighbor, George Harrison.

the youngins who really didn't know Jon Lords work and dedication to music, let alone rock and Metal music. Go listen to Child in Time and Lazy. Hell, just listen to the best of Deep Purple. It will give you an inkling as to the musical genius Jon Lord was.
I hope RNRHOF feels guilty as hell right now for not putting Deep Purple in. Absolutely criminal.

The world of music in general has lost an icon and a good person, and we are poorer because of his passing.

RIP Jon Lord

We are very much poorer because of his passing. First Dio, now Jon Lord. If God forbid our King, Mr. Tony Iommi passes then our beloved music from the 70's will be a closed book and we will just have the memories of our heroes and the timeless music they left us.

I'm not all that familiar with Deep Purple with the exception of the Burn and Machine Head albums but I do vividly remember watching a video of Lord doing an extended solo before 'When a Blind Man Cries' and being blown away by it. Truly a legend and makes me look forward to digging deeper into the Purple catalog.

"In Rock" and "Fireball".

The 80's albums ("Perfect Strangers" and "House of Blue Light") are great too. As are the 2 he recorded in the 90's ("Purpendicular", "Abandon")

Whitesnake are known as a cheesy MTV-hair metal band, but before that, Lord recorded some great albums w/ them (Trouble, Lovehunter, Ready & Willing)

Amazing!!! Jon Lord the human metronome!!! Decades of hard work and some incredible superhuman skill.

I've been watching the Live in Denmark '72 DVD for the past couple of days and it's stunning to watch those guys interplay off of each other...simply stunning.
