RITCHIE BLACKMORE: 'Without JON LORD There Would Be No DEEP PURPLE' - July 17, 2012
Former DEEP PURPLE and RAINBOW guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (pictured below) has released the following statement regarding the passing of former PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord:

"Jon was not only a great musician, he was my favorite dinner companion.

"We are all deeply saddened. We knew he was sick but the word was that he was recovering and doing much better. This news came as a complete shock.

"Without Jon there would be no DEEP PURPLE. He lives on in our hearts and memories."

Jon Lord died on Monday (July 16) at age 71 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Lord, who was known for his keyboard virtuosity and his reinvention of the Hammond B-3 organ sound, co-wrote such PURPLE classics as "Smoke On The Water" and "Child In Time", among others. Lord and drummer Ian Paice were the only original members to last through the band's initial run from 1968 to 1976. He was on board for their 1984 reunion and stayed on through to his 2002 retirement from the band, after which he's worked primarily in the classical field.

Over the course of his career, Lord also worked with the ARTWOODS, FLOWER POT MEN, PAICE, ASHTON AND LORD, WHITESNAKE and good friend and neighbor, George Harrison.

It's good to know that Blackmore still appreciates Jon Lord, even after all the ugly business during their breakup and reunion. R.I.P.

Blackmore and the remaining members of Purple should reunite at least for a concert tribute to Lord...just dreaming...

They can't reunite because there is no Deep Purple without Jon Lord.

...the point is to pay tribute / respect. Maybe get in a bunch of keyboard players like they did singers for Freddie Mercury.

Good words by him. Just wish he and DP would of done one last reunion tour w/ the classic lineup before Jon's passing. That would of been epic.

R.I.P. Mr. Lord

Having any kind of cancer is hard enough, but there is such a small, almost non-existent, survival rate from pancreatic cancer. I hope Jon went peacefully in his sleep and without pain. R.I.P. Mr. Lord. Your music and eternally bad-ass'd Hammond B3 playing will live on for all of infamy as long as there is music being played. Seems fitting as music tends to equal immortality when it's great stuff. Peace.

I'm glad Ritchie said something. I was always kind of bothered by his silence when Dio died.

As this article notes, it was "characteristically terse":

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1639371/ronnie-james-dio-remembered-by-bandmates-tony-iommi-ritchie-blackmore-others.jhtml

Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who left Deep Purple in 1975 to form Rainbow with Dio, was characteristically terse in his statement: "Ronnie had a unique and wonderful voice. He will be sadly missed in the rock and roll world."

Ritchie Blackmore surrounds himself with people that he can control and push around. Ian Gillan, Ronnie James Dio, David Coverdale would have none of that shit! There's another set of people that worked with him like Jon Lord that were able to influence him with conversation, charm and such great talent that he had no choice but to care about what they had to say. I truly wish Mr Blackmore had a nicer personality because we have certainly missed out on many great Hard Rock albums. But alas his monster ego made him the incredible talent he is.

What an absurd cluster of assumption. Have you ever met Blackmore? Blackmore actually has too little ego in some ways. He is actually a bit shy and is a non-follower of others. The reason people like you think he has an ego is because he doesn't like to do what other people want or expect of him. That is NOT a "monster ego". If he DID have a monster ego he would be doing all the progects people want him to do! He had already been through the music-industry war of life by the time he was like 25! He worked with notoriously difficult people in his teens.

What an absurd cluster of assumption. Have you ever met Blackmore? Yeah, I'm saying that to you! No, I have never met Ritchie Blackmore but I can READ! I can watch him in concert and see how cuts other players off while they're soloing, especially keyboard players. He has said in interviews that he wants to get a couple friends and beat the crap out of Ian Gillan. I have met Ian Gillan, Ronnie James Dio and heard their view on him. WTF are you talking about Ritchie Blackmore doesn't do what others want? No shit Sherlock!! That's a little obvious. He is the master of his life and career and I totally can respect that. In case you're wondering I'm a huge Ritchie Blackmore fan, he's one of the all-time greatest. Though I did lose interest when he started the renaissance music. But even that is respectable, just not my thing.

*Yes I have met him. I have done some promotional work for him as well. There in lies the problem. Your experience is based on what you read and watch on youtube. You don't even understand his humor! He is totally goofing in that video where he speaks about beating up Gillan in an ally. He can say anything with a straight face and loves to do it when he's being seen or in print. Re:"He cuts off keyboard players"?? He leads inprovisations because he cannot copy others. For a fan you are seriously lacking in understanding of the guy. Well, I have met both Dio and Gillan as well and Dio, depending on his mood would say good things usually. Gillan doesnt matter to me.

Richie has always been seen by me as a talented, but a mentally deranged person. And these words "he was my favorite dinner companion" just proved it.

Oh, I don't know. I took that as high praise from a guy who would usually just as soon spit on you as acknowledge your existence. Hey, maybe Ritchie might like to work with Geoff Taint now, they'd understand each other.

But seriously, I took that comment to mean Jon Lord was the closest thing he had to a friend back in the day, in Deep Purple. So Ritchie must actually be sad this week, like the rest of us, imagine that.

Is actually very human rather than the over the top sentimental nonsense that always feels so self important when you read it.
I hope when I'm dead someone says that about me.

It's interesting that we have such high technology to spy on people and harass them, as well as being able to beam back HD color pics 46 million miles through space from Mars....but they still can't cure cancer or even the common cold (or anything else it seems). They can if they wanted to, but there's too much money in chemo...big pharma is EVIL.

If you believe everything you read, cures for specific types of cancers have already been found, but the pharmaceutical companies have sued the doctors to prevent them from bringing their treatments to market. Because, of course, the drug companies profit from their expensive drugs that prolong our suffering after we are diagosed with cancer.

In the seventies when I was a youngster, I began listening to classic rock radio. Some of the bands I'd heard and had an early impression on me were, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Clapton, and Deep Purple. "Smoke On The Water" introduced me to DP and I'd remained a fan since. When the band reunited the classic line up in the ealry 80's with "Perfect Strangers", I was totally reeled into that band. That was a great record, and that was first time that I actually concentrated on Jon Lord's masterful abilities on the Hammond organ. He was the best keyboardist playing in a rock context that I've EVER heard by anyone!

He'll be sorely missed.
