BLACK SABBATH Bassist: JON LORD Was 'One Of The Great Musicians Of My Generation' - July 16, 2012
BLACK SABBATH bassist Geezer Butler (pictured below) has released the following statement:

"[I was] very sad to hear of [former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist] Jon's [Lord] death, following his battle with the demon cancer. [He was] one of the great musicians of my generation. Tony Iommi [BLACK SABBATH guitarist] recently worked with Jon, and said what a lovely bloke he was. I met him a few times, but never got to work with him. Blessings."

Jon Lord died earlier today (Monday, July 16) in a U.K. hospital at the age of 71. He suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism at the London Clinic after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Jon was "surrounded by his loving family," a message on his official web site said.

Sabbath and Purple, it really didn't get any heavier or more innovative than that 'in the beginning'. Thanks for the words Geezer. Sad but thankful for the killer music Jon made (very much including Whitesnake and solo albums like Pictured Within).

Such a shame. RIP to Mr. Lord.

I dread the next two decades. So many giants of rock and metal will be leaving us.

I agree with you and it sucks even more for my generation who loves this kind of music because we were born a generation or two too late (1993), but whats even worse is that we do not have any new great musicians to replace the ones we lose.

You better get your ass on the ball because unfortunately like Aces_High99 said the Reaper is just getting started.

The older we get the older our heroes get. It's just a grim and brutal reality.

That's why I've seen every band that I've wanted to see, even bands like Budgie, Bang and Cactus (never saw Led Zeppelin and it looks like I'm never going to) because if you have a chance and miss it you might never get another one.

Luckily (I thank my lucky stars every single day) I was able to see DP with Jon at the 9:30 club in DC around ’97. They were absolutely, cosmically, mindblowingly awesome! There is no adjective to describe how awesome they were and Ritchie wasn’t even in the band!

RIP Jon “The Hammond Wizard” Lord

The ball just started rolling, sadly. All those aging rockers (who often went trough a very tiring and abusive lifestyle) are falling one after the other. the genre never really experienced the death of its icon (like jazz or rock n roll did). What's even more sad is that most of the new artists out there will never be as influential or revered as the originals. The creativity and relevance of the broad genre slowly dies with the personalities behind it. New acts might be passionate and dedicated but they are rarely being innovative and bringing us something as valuable as Dio, Lord or whoever else left us recently...

I'd say heavy metal already suffered the loss of its icon, Ronnie James Dio, and now the greatest keyboard player in this genre has also died. Dio's death started the end of the origins of our favorite music. Treasure those who remain while they do.
