Producer, Session Guitarist Claim QUEENSRŸCHE Drummer Didn't Play On 'Operation: Mindcrime II' - July 15, 2012
Producer Jason Slater, who worked with QUEENSRŸCHE's on on their last three studio albums, claims that the the band's members Scott Rockenfield (drums), Michael Wilton (guitar) and Eddie Jackson (bass), had very little to no involvement with the band's 2006 CD, "Operation: Mindcrime II", despite the fact that they were credited with having played on the record.

Wilton, Jackson, Rockenfield and guitarist Parker Lundgren announced on June 20 that they were parting ways with singer Geoff Tate and recruiting powerhouse vocalist Todd La Torre of CRIMSON GLORY as his replacement. The new QUEENSRŸCHE lineup has already performed live, having played two shows in their home city of Seattle under the name RISING WEST.

Slater submitted a sworn declaration in support of Tate's motion for preliminary injunction to prevent Michael Wilton, Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield and Parker Lundgren from using the name QUEENSRŸCHE for their new group.

Slater said in his declaration: "I first worked with QUEENSRŸCHE on their 'Operation: Mindcrime II' CD.

"When I met the band, everyone seemed enthusiastic about making the CD, but as we began working, none of the band members except for Geoff Tate were interested in contributing, showing up for recording sessions or participating in any fashion. On several occasions, studio time was arranged but none of the band members showed up. This left myself, Geoff Tate, and [then-QUEENSRŸCHE guitarist] Mike Stone to write and record the record the record. Every attempt was made to include the band. They received copies of the songs after they were written and time was set aside for them to come in and record. We scheduled two weeks at a local studio to record Michael Wilton. When he showed up, he hadn't learned any of the songs, so all the time was spent trying to teach him the songs so he could record them. In the end, he wasn't capable of performing any of the songs accurately enough to be used on the record. In the end, we had no guitars from Mike that could be used. The guitars on the record were played by Mike Stone, a session guitarist and myself.

"Scott Rockenfield did not participate in the making of the record at all, and a session drummer was brought in to play on the record. I don't believe [Scott] listened to any of the music until after the record was completed.

"We had Eddie Jackson come to the [San Francisco] Bay Area, where Geoff and I were finishing recording the vocals and mixing the record, with the intent of recording his bass parts. Again, he hadn't learned the songs and we spent 10 days trying to get professional recordings but couldn't get much that could be added to the songs, so I played the majority of the bass on the record.

"The members of the band badmouthed the record to the press and important people in the industry until they saw the record getting favorable reviews. At that point, they started taking credit for all the work that was done in their absence.

"The next full-length record I worked on with them was 'American Soldier'. The band was supposed to submit songs they had written and we were supposed to start recording as songs carne in. It quickly became apparent that they were again going to leave all the work to Geoff as nobody submitted any songs. Geoff and I wrote all but two songs on the record, the other two carne from outside writers. The band did play on this record, but put the minimum amount of effort into it. They did nothing beyond copying the performances Geoff and I recorded on the songwriting demos.

"As the producer of over 20 major label records, countless independent releases and several film scores, my opinion of the process wasn't that of working with a band, but that of working with a solo artist and some mediocre hired musicians."

Slater's account appears to corroborated, at least in part, by guitarist Mitch Doran (a former member of SNAKE RIVER CONSPIRACY, which also featured Slater), who wrote on the MyLesPaul.com forum, "If you guys read the rest of the [QUEENSRŸCHE] depositions, there are numerous references to the fact that a session guitarist had to be brought in to play on a few QUEENSRŸCHE records post-2005. I am said session guitarist.

"I ended up re-playing 90% of the rhythm guitar on 'Operation: Mindcrime II' record, and also wrote and played most of the guitar solos. I was still in my late teens when I played that stuff. At the point that I wrote the solos and played all of the rythms, we didn't have a lot of time. Geoff Tate kept calling us during the one week we had to mix the record and asking for things to sound 'heavier.' The producer would then have me re-play all of the rythms through a Mesa/Marshall dual head setup we had running. I did this for the song 'Hands' and 'I'm American' probably three times before we settled on a combination of different amp settings/takes.

"Scott Rockenfield isn't even on 'Operation: Mindcrime II'. A session drummer/old friend of mine named Matt Lucich from South San Francisco played all of the drums except for one bridge, which me and the producer simultaneously played on two kits spaced across the room from each other. Then there's the track 'I'm American', which is a bad midi-programmed drum take that I did on a laptop and it ended up getting used for some reason (time constraints, or the producer didn't like the live take).

"After the first guitar recording session, they hired me to engineer for the rest of the record as well.

"They broke the silence (pun intended) about my involvement in their declarations. I spent five long years not talking about this stuff to ANYONE.

"That record, for all intents and purposes, SHOULD carry the following credits:

* Drums: Matt Lucich
* Guitars: Mitch Doran (yours truly), Ashif Hakik, Mike Stone, Michael Wilton
* Bass: Ed Jackson, Jason Slater
* Vocals: Geoff Tate (Miranda Tate, Pamela Moore)
* Orchestration/Keys: Ashif Hakik
* Mixed: Chris Wolfe

"So as you can see, it's a QUEENSRŸCHE-related record, but not exactly a classic or traditonal QUEENSRŸCHE lineup.

"I always had a lot of respect and admiration for that band, from back when 'Mindcrime' and 'Empire' were two great records that I enjoyed.

"When I was asked to play guitar on their record, by Geoff Tate and their then-producer, I had no idea what the rest of their situation was. Ed Jackson showed up and played his ass off. Mike Wilton was never at the studio when I was, and now that I read the deposition that he wrote, he says he was kept away from the studio. I had no idea about any of that, and it was explained to me that Wilton was just not showing up to play. It never made sense to me at all. Neither did Scott not being there. I always thought of Scott as a master drummer. Why then was I programming drums for this record? I was told a lot of stories as to why, but when you are a hungry kid and getting offered good engineer/session guitar work on a tight deadline, you drink the coffee and do the work. Years later I met Scott and worked on some songs with him and Geoff, Scott was always very nice, and indeed the master drummer that I had originally pictured.

"It's really sad that it had to come to this, and I feel like if these guys could have wrote all of those depositions, as heartfelt messages to one another in private, things would be a lot different. Also, Geoff was always a calm and peaceful guy. He'd drive us around the Bay Area to the mastering facilities, he'd offer to bring stuff in, he sent us gifts after the record was done mixing, he sat the engineers down and gave us a talk thanking us for being professionals and apologizing for any toes he could have stepped on during the creative process (which he didn't)

"I will say that there were a few screaming arguments in the lobby between Geoff's manager and the producer, and more than once the producer came in and told me to stop working (while recording ed playing his bass parts) and not to let the hard drive with the Pro Tools files out of my sight.

"I have always had a large black spot in my heart over having played on this record, having it debut at #15 on Billboard, and then not being able to tell anyone about it. I have a lot to say about each song on it. I also completely understand why a QUEENSRŸCHE fan would put it on and say, 'WTF?'"

In his sworn declaration, Wilton stated about the writing and recording process for "Operation: Mindcrime II", "Susan Tate [Geoff's wife and QUEENSRŸCHE's then-manager] brought to the table the idea to record 'Operation: Mindcrime II'. The band was hesitant and did not want to lessen the original. But Susan Tate and Geoff Tate hired a budget producer and took control without really any other input. The manipulation of upfront monies was the Tates' main tool to get what they wanted. Scott Rockenfield, Eddie Jackson and I were squeezed out of having any input in the musical direction or business decisions, thus the project suffered. The rest was an organizational nightmare. The producer was never around when needed; he was constantly asleep on the job or playing games on his media player. He would send emails to the wrong email addresses. During the initial writing phase, I would show up to bring my input to the creative process only to find that the producer, the new guitar player (who were both staying with the Tates at the time), along with Geoff Tate had been up late the night before or up early that morning and had written the songs without me. I was then told my ideas were not needed as the songs were now done. I could, however, 'bring my own style' in during the recording after learning to play what they wrote for me. In frustration, I gave up on the writing process knowing that I would at least get to make changes in the studio to bring back the QUEENSRŸCHE sound into these songs that we were known for. The final straw was when they refused to let me to be a part of the final recordings and mixes. I was shut out and they had the nerve to replace some of my parts on my songs. They denied me flying to San Francisco to be a part of my band, telling me that everything was ready to go and I was not needed. Had the communication been better, and had I been aware that parts needed to be recorded or rewritten, I would have been there. It was not until years later that I even became aware of the issues during the final recording and mixing of 'Operation: Mindcrime II'. It was all under the control of Geoff and Susan Tate. Call it delusions of grandeur, but they were convinced that this was going to sell three times more than the original, and to date (six years later) this album has sold fewer than 150,000 copies. The original album sold over 500,000 copies within a year."

I agree with you, angelus - I do think it's interesting what happens behind the scenes of making a record, but these guys? I've always called them Queensreek. They might be good musicians, but their music is straight cheese.

Once again, a guy associated with Geoff Tate kissing his ass. And it's even more vicious than the Paul Gargano statement because the other members have expressed their dislike for Jason.

I wonder if Kelly Gray's going to say something.

And the following 2 sucked even worse.

Jason Slater just doesn't want to lose his job. He hid these facts for all these years and it was OK, now he tells what really went on just in the name of justice? Fuck you slater. Geoff Tate brutalized QR members for the last 10 years or so, became a dictator in the band and all the remaining members had to keep their mouths shut because they didn't want to lose their jobs. They all have families, at the end of the day. Their songwriting contributions -at least Wilton's- have been rejected by Tate for years. Which was good for you since you made more money through writing songs for QR.

But know what? You just produced the 3 worst QR records. Great work! You should be proud of yourself for putting your signature (along with Tate's) on 3 horrendous records.

Bring on the new and TRUE QR record with the new singer!

Besides the songwriting being off the wall. The guitars have no punch, the drums are very flat and overall, the mix is very poor for a band like Queensryche. These declarations make sense.. can someone please point out an album that sounds great that was produced/engineering by Jason Slater?

The fast becoming sad saga of Queensryche is becoming more twisted with each passing day. At this point, perhaps it's best to just drop the band name and, move forward with the new band.

For reminding me this album even existed!!! It had been gathering dust in my CD collection. Though it's a good album, it is totally ruined by the sacherine sweet Celine Dion like ballad at the end. Since Tate is gone and there will be shows under whatever name playing the first albums, with Tate being gone will Pamela Moore want to be involved in this, or was she "hired" through Tate? If they will play old shit under whatever name don't forget old, financially broke Europe!!!

Now all of Geoff Tates camp is denying every single thing the rest of the band is saying. It's just stupid. To be honest...Geoff Tate's boat was sunk completely after the video was posted on here of him spitting in Scott Rockenfield's face at that Brazil show. Pretty much proved everything they were saying was true...and Tate's spitting antics would be more than enough for anyone to kick him out of their band. I mean, you can SEE the spray of spit head right to SR face during that song. It was pretty unbelievable!!!

I never liked this album. They even made Ronnie James Dio sound bad, which is quite an achievement. A duet between Geoff Tate and Ronnie James Dio should easily have been an amazing and legendary thing, but the song is just too shabby.

Operation Mindcrime II is like all the other Queensryche albums made after Empire: Very, very poor. I'm glad Wilton and Rockenfield didn't contribute to it, more respect to them.

It's sad to see how a hard/progressive rock legacy has been thrown in the trash can. Independient of who's right and who's wrong, the influence of the first records of the band will last in the hearts and minds of the fans of the band, and in the music of all of this other bands that has cited QR as a big influence. And that was the important part in the story of this band: The music. Better the two parts of this drama should forget about all this BS and move forward doing, each of them, the music they want to do, and stop damaging the Queensryche legacy even more.

considering the fact that OM II (as well as the other 2 albums this tool produced) sucked. Everything these producers/hired guns say pretty much goes right along with Michael Wilton's statement and doesn't refute anything Wilton, Jackson, and Rockenfield have said. Those guys were obviously too passive for far too long, but I still side with them in all this and hope they have a chance to record a great metal QR album with the new singer. Tate was great back in the day and he always seemed into the old songs the 5 times I saw them live....but he's made it clear that metal isn't his thing, and by having his wife as the manager she is obviously gonna put his interests above any of the other guys. They just need to part ways, and hopefully Wilton, Jackson, and Rockenfield will write an album that will make all this bullshit worthwhile for themselves and the fans.

Tate was pulling all the strings behind the scene and shutting out the other members. As has been mentioned, this exactly explains why this and the other albums totally sucked. If I was Scott, Eddie or Michael and I heard the songs off O:M2 I wouldn't want to play on it either. I am in no way speaking ill of Ronnie James' appearance, but the track he's on is the only song I can listen to. All his collaboration proves is you can't polish a turd.

Once again Geoff has totally sidetracked (in this case, by proxy) the issue he's trying to fight here.... Assuming the statement here is completely factual, how does it tie in to the brand ownership issue?

Anyone who works in the biz long enough knows that there are WAAAY more albums that bands don't appear on, than just this one or this band. It's hardly uncommon. And making a big deal about song crediting... Another common practice. Look at Britney Spears.. Never written a word or a note in her life, but according to her label and CD notes, she writes most albums.

Geoff is totally fucking himself up the ass because he can't stand the fact that he's been sacked. And everything that's coming from the Tate team is just further proof that what the others have said is true. He's insulting, bullying, personally attacking them, making assumptions about what they were thinking individually and collectively... If he had a bit of humility, he could accept his departure, draw up a nice severance package and move on.

He's already shown himself to be deceitful with the movie advance and a list of other shit and based on his behaviour this week alone, you get a peek at what kind of person he is to work for (not with) and know. Because this new public persona of his didn't come about over night.

First of all, fuck Jason Slater!

Secondly, his bullshit testimony only adds to the validity of the band members statements. Are we to believe that they didn't participate in the recordings because they were just lazy? What a bunch of bullshit. The fact that Geoff Tate has been treating Queensryche like his own personal vanity project for so long only makes me more eager to see him go away! The REAL Queensryche knows how important it is for them to record a kick ass new album and I have no doubt they will deliver!

While the production on OMII was not great it sounded better than a lot of albums released in the last 2 years by big name bands. Also, I thought The Chase was a really solid tune, mostly due to RJD of course, but that is the one song from that album that I still listen to.

The guitarist will probably post more. The post makes Slater sound like a real cock..not paying the guy much or giving him credit. It doesn't mention Tate that much, but makes Eddie Jackson sound like a pretty swell guy. It pretty much backs up what the rest of the band says more or less. "K, since it was asked, I'll go ahead and elaborate a little bit. This will be a longer than average post from me.

I first became involved with the OM:II record around 2005 or so, when then singer in my band at the time gave me some stereo drum track recordings to recreate as midi files. He was programming them and gave me half to work on to speed things up. I was told that these were scratch drum takes played by Scott Rockenfield to demos for the operation mindcrime II record. The performances were mostly very good, but the recording quality was obviously a demo. It sounded like one microphone just put up for the purposes of capturing ideas. I programmed the midi, and the singer in my band, Ashif, compiled the programming with his work and gave them to the producer.

The next call that I got was to come down to an office in Redwood City, CA where the producer and Ashif had a small recording rig assembled. I was instructed to play power chords on a Gibson SG into a DI box, going into the DAW. These were going to be sequenced and re-amped for different songs on the record. I completed the recordings, we hung out for a minute, and then me and Ash took off. That building was really creepy in a way, because we only ever went there after hours, and most of the rest of the building was a big open warehouse full of cubicles where people designed toys or something. A bunch of weird dolls and toys everywhere.

The singer, Ashif, then left the Bay Area with the producer to Seattle, to stay at Geoff's and write orchestrations for a month. At this point I believe he also recorded a few guitar parts. Ashif had me go over and take care of his dog while he was gone, we were pretty close friends, so I would go and spend time with the dog and walk it and feed it every day. He loved that dog and would call or text almost every day checking up. I got a lot of updates from him. It turned from "dude, this is so cool!" to "get me the **** out of here" fast. He sounded very overworked.

After about a month, production of the record moved back down to the bay area. The next call I got was to come in to a studio in Menlo Park called the Annex. I was to record a few more guitar tracks. This time, they needed a few layers of acoustic guitar for a song called "Hostage." I came down, met Geoff Tate, met the engineers at the studio, and we got to work. I sat out in the live room of Studio D in the annex with an acoustic guitar, while the engineer Chris Wolfe ran around trying to fix an issue with the signal chain. I think I saw him go into the wall with a soldiering iron and fix a tie line upside-down while laying on his back, then hop back up, and walk out all without stopping conversation. He was a really impressive engineer, and aside from me, the youngest one in the building!

Anyways, the issue was resolved, and we laid down the acoustic track for hostage, a double of that take and then a few more color things that Geoff heard me playing in-between takes and liked. They then called me in to the control room while Chris Wolfe edited the takes. After he finished, I was handed a line6 variax guitar with the sitar-setting dialed in, and was told to improvise melodies in-between Geoff's vocals during the verses. We laid down a few sitar takes, and I was then handed a les paul, and told to re-track a bunch of the distorted rhythm guitar parts. I spent about half an hour doing this, when the producer, who was punching me in had to leave the room. I asked if I could just punch myself in, at which point they realized I was a capable protools engineer. I spent the rest of the night re-tracking rhythm guitars for "Hostage" and was asked to come back and help engineer and record the bass sessions with Ed Jackson the following week, which I agreed to.

The week spent with Ed recording bass parts was one of the funniest and most memorable during that record. He was one of the most professional and fully prepared musicians I've ever worked with. He also has a great sense of humor. We were recording the bass sessions off in another room, to versions of the songs with demo vocals and midi drums in them. That part of the studio had burned down once in the early 90's, and so when it would rain, there was a slight ant-problem. Ed saw the ants, and told the first guy who happened to be standing near him who worked for the studio, something innocent like "Hey, dude, you think you could maybe clean up these ants?" - -- which made perfect sense to me, isn't it his band who is paying for the studio time? Shouldn't they treat him like a client and clean the shit up so we can do our job without bugs crawling on us?

The guy he asked didn't seem to take it well, he just kind of nodded and backed out of the control room. It was then just me and Ed, and a few minutes later the producer of the album comes in and has a talk with Ed about who works for who. Apparently it wasn't that guy's job to be cleaning ants for us, and he got pissy with the producer, who had to smooth it over and find a way to not have the same conversation happen again. So Ed is sitting there, basically getting shit on for trying to get rid of the Ants. He was very calm and nice, and got on to recording.

The next day he shows up with a big bright red piece of luggage dragging behind him. It was full of industrial-sized sacks of assorted candy, and a stack of cheap plastic bowls. "I just like having candy around when I play!" he said with a big grin. "here help me spread these bowls out!" I think he was having a little fun with them by placing the candy there, and I think it was comedically brilliant.

We spent the week recording the songs, he knew all of the parts inside and out and played beyond professionally. He was constantly listening back to takes and saying "NO, DO IT OVER! That one sounded LAZY!"

He was never hard on me, only on himself until he got it right. He even had multiple "fills" for instrumental sections and recorded alternate ideas for the producer to choose from. On one song, he even recorded two complete keeper versions with different attitudes and inflections. I really feel that most of what we recorded in these bass sessions got used for the record. There were a few times in mix that the decision was made by others to keep the demo bass track, which was played by the producer and not Ed.

During this week of Bass sessions, Vocals were being recorded across the hall. As we finished Bass sessions, I was continuously tasked with replacing guitar parts and adding color to others. It hadn't occurred to me that I might be playing solos on the record, but sure enough the producer and Geoff sat me down and said that they needed me to play lead guitar solos. The first song that I wrote or played a solo on that record was the song "The Hands." The one thing that I remember was how I'd be just blocking out the solo, sort of playing a scratch take of which scales and patterns I wanted to use over each section, and often times the producer and geoff would say "NEXT, that one was good, good enough, NEXT!"

I'd have loved to have had some time to have worked out the leads, but there was supposedly a deadline to meet, and when the producer/writer and singer of the band says it's done, who am I to say "no"? It's not my song, it's theirs, literally. I had a lot of ideas about bringing back certain melodies from Mindcrime and superimposing them over the other chords, creating a thematic continuity. There's a little of that on there, but I didn't feel comfortable vocalizing the idea, I just did it.

I've dug out my vinyl copy of OM:II (I think it's the only copy I own). Here are some thoughts on each track:

1) Overture

It feels like there are barely any instruments on this track. Lots of synth and production effects. Basically the same as the demo version, only Matt Lucich is drumming. Producer played bass, guitars are Mike Stone. I didn't play on this.

2) Convict

This is just an interlude. That's the producer playing the part of the prisongaurd who releases Nikki. If you turn up the recording very loud, you hear him say "wipe that lipstick off, mothereffer" under his breath just before the next song hits.

3) I'm American

This song is the first one that I am playing guitar on. I also programmed the drums. There are no live drums in this song, all midi. I believe that Mike Stone played both of the solos on this, I am only playing the rhythm guitar tracks here.

The gang-vocal recording session was pretty funny, we were all (engineers, producer, geoff, pam, ed) out in the live room standing around a mic, yelling "I'M AMERICAN" for the chorus, and Ed Jackson kept yelling "I'M A MEXICAN!" or "I'M ARMENIAN!" We also recorded the gang vocals for the bridge "That's right, MORE" part in the same session.

Matt lucich played drums, Ed Jackson played the final bass take on this, I played all of the final rhythm guitar tracks, and the leads are what I was told were Wilton and Stone's demo leads.

4) One Foot in Hell

I am playing all of the lead guitar in the intro of this song, and all of the wah-wah call and response with Geoff through the verses. I also played all of the rhythm guitar. Just before the first word of the first verse, there's a really fast run with a tapped top-note. There are little things like this that I recorded that were never performed the same way live.

I am confused as to why Miranda Tate has an incomplete credit on wikipedia, because she sang on this song as well as the hands. I remember very well, because chris was engineering and she actually contributed vocal melodies that changed the mode of the chorus, making it sound really cool. Me and chris wolfe sat there that night making sure that all of the vocals sat well.

The main guitar solo, after the bridge, I replaced both harmony parts but the bluesy section that comes in is Mike Stone, and I think that it's one of the coolest solos on the record. Matt Lucich playing drums, I believe that this is the producer playing the bass part.

5) Hostage

This is definitely Ed playing the bass track, me playing all of the distorted rhythm and acoustic guitars, me playing fake sitar and also me playing the guitar solos. Matt Lucich on the drums. This was a case where I was just blocking out available scales that would work over the piece and they just kept it with a quick harmony added.

After the gang vocals that say "GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY!" you'll hear my voice saying "Order! Order! We will have order in the court"

Among the other uncredited work I did for this record, I was the "voice actor" who played the Judge as well as Nikki on the record.

6) The Hands

Matt lucich on drums, me on ALL guitars from the intro clean guitars to the guitar solo to the last note of the song.

The solo that I wrote for this was longer and had a lot more shred after the climax, but this is an edited version. The producer was sitting there with me, we both chain smoked and I punched myself in. He was sort of egging me on to make the solo crazier and faster, but the fast part ended up getting edited out of the track. I have a stereo stem of just the guitar solo somewhere that I was using to learn the solo better to play a final version. That never happened, but the original solo lives somewhere.

This is definitely Ed playing, I remember his bass fills too well. In fact, you can audibly hear which songs Ed is playing on pretty easily.

7) Speed of light

Thats my voice in the intro and bridge "Whatever is begun in anger, ends in shame" "something something madness" The producer had me read a bunch of self-help lines in a VO session. There was also a blonde lady who came in and did the female parts, she was playing Nikkis psychiatrist and I was playing Nikki.

I rerecorded a bunch of rhythm guitar parts, Matt lucich played drums except for the descending bridge.

That's a really weird bridge, I am playing the guitars, and me and the producer are both playing drums and percussion spaced across the room from each other and with very creative mic placement. Beatles-y sound.

8) Signs Say Go

Matt Lucich - drums
Ed Jackson- Bass
Mitch Doran (me) - rhythm guitars
Mike Stone - Guitar Solo

9) Re-Arrange You

I am playing all rhythm guitars
Mike stone plays the guitar solo, except for a few harmonies that was told to add to the diminished section.
Matt Lucich drumming (good performance from him)
Not sure if this is Slater or Jackson on bass

10) The chase

I am playing all rhythm guitars.
I believe that Ashif Hakik wrote this guitar solo, Producer had me replay most of the outro harmony solos.

11) Murderer

The intro to the song is mostly midi. Even the chapman stick sample is midi, producer tried to tell us he played it live, he owned a chapman's stick but that is such a bad sample of one that nobody believed it was live. We all just sort of gave each other that look.

I replayed the rhythm guitars from the demo, wrote the whole guitar solo section, and took part in the gang vocal sessions.

Matt Lucich is drumming, except for the bridge and outro drums, which I programmed. Listen to how obvious the hi-hats are in the bridge.

12) Circles

I didn't touch Circles

13) If I could change it all

I am playing all of the guitar parts in this song. I am proud of the bluesy bits. I used a telecaster in to an old Silvertone head.

Once the "Omen" sounding choir comes in, there's some understated tasty playing.
Matt Drumming, Ed on Bass

14) An Intentional Confrontation

Replayed all of the rhythm guitar.

Didn't touch the solo.

15) Junkies Blues

I replayed all of the rhythm guitars and harmonies.

More silvertone and telecaster

Matt Lucich on drums.

Not sure if this is the demo bass or Ed.

16) Fear City Slide

I am playing all of the rhythm guitars.

Matt Lucich drums.

Mike Stone plays the guitar solo.

17) Promises

I am playing the nylon stringed guitar parts, stone plays the electric solo. This song always sounded empty, like it was missing the main instrument.

some of you are really lacking in reading comprehension. This statement from Jason Slater, an employee of the Taint family, confirms what Wilton, Rockenfield, and Jackson said in their statetments. They have been progressively more shut out of the Queensyrche recording process, and it really picked up momentum here with Rockenfield not on Mindcrime II at all and Wilton only on a small number of songs.

The Taint family has been in control of the band at least this far back. Rockenfield and Wilton obviously complained a lot more than easy going Ed Bass, and those two were excluded from the recording process of the last 3 or more albums. But as they said in their own sworn statements, they had material and worked on it for each of these albums, but the Taints refused to include their material.

With the recent revelation that Geoff Taint sold rights to the original Operation Mindcrime without including the other guys who wrote the music on those songs, you can see why Geoff Taint wanted complete control over the sequel to the original Mindcrime.

some of OMCII..but mainly the parts that reminded me of MCI. I just was dumbfounded how they continued with that alternative/grunge sounding tone all over it. Its not that they had to have a super 80s thin ass guitar tone to be good, but at least they could take cues from more modern metal bands that are good, like Nevermore or something (For tones and riffs im saying). But I believe that Wilton did only a solo on ONE song. That session guy should submit a deposition!

OMC II also had horrid mixing and production. I'm not a HUGE Andy Sneap fan always, but go with someone like him or even Neil Kernon again. I've recorded demos in my bedroom that are mixed better lol..plus we were in the middle of the ultra compressed "loudness war" type production at the time..that shit sounds more dated now than Mindcrime I!

Well said $lave1

I feel a little ripped off, buying what I thought was a full QR record. It is such an underwhelming release, but it sold because we (QR fans) bought it in the hope we had a comeback on our hands.

I feel bad for everyone involved, Tate too, believe it or not. It seems the creative heart was ripped out of the band without Degarmo, without focus and without the direction they used to have. Tate tried to step in and lead the way, but in doing so he seems to have alienated the rest of the guys. What a shame, and how hard must it be for all the guys to look back at nearly two decades of being in a misfiring, misled, hollowed out band.

Fans have suffered too. QR should have produced a raft of classic work, a series of amazing prog metal albums. What a waste.

No prob man. Just read all the depositions on the queensryche website. The most hilarious thing was Susan Tate's submitting of all these articles about downloading affecting record sales. Then you have that temporary manager they had saying that the sales were effected by the quality of the albums. But tell bands like Maiden that the reason why they're SELLING OUT ARENAS is because of the "Declining music industry". Casinos vs arenas, come on, can't the Tate camp get a fucking clue?

I have been reading Blabbermouth for years and finally had to make a profile so I could post! The Warning, RFP, OM are 3 of my favorite all time albums!

They should just shelve the QR name... both parties go their separate ways... and the guys put out an album under Rising West and keep the profits to themselves.... we'll know who the real QR will be when GT and RW release them!

If Napalm Death and Skynyrd can keep their names, let THREE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS be able to keep the name. I dig Tate's voice, thats why some of the later albums are semi-tolerable SOMETIMES. But you read interviews with Wilton from 2002 where he even states that he's dissatisfied with the direction (also on the Ryche site)..besides, Wilton cowrote over 45 percent of OMC I. Look at album credits, they can't lie if he's on some songs and not on others, what reason would they do that other than HIM HAVING A HAND IN THE WRITING OF THOSE SAID SONGS. Most of the depositions in support of Tate are vague "oh i met him at a Halloween party, he's such a swell guy" lol. Most against are EXTREMELY SPECIFIC as far as what happened in Brazil, etc. I think its clear who has the egg (or spit) on their face. Btw, the whole Portnoy thing is ironic because he spits all the time, Petrucci had to get a "spit shield" on some of his gear even! But its just a habit and not meant in malice. Maybe him and Tate can have a spitting contest

I kinda dug "Mindcrime at the Moore".. i thought the performance of MCII was way better than the album (and you had the whole band, despite the "janick" of the group Mike Stone, and don't bash me for that, Janick is a WAY better songwriter who has saved Maiden's ass a lot of the time, just referring to how his solos sound on stage and how he looks lol). I had some hope after watching that, but obviously was dissapointed as hell afterward by their next moves. They definitely needed to leave Mindcrime alone. Sometimes open ended endings make way more interesting ends to stories than making them resolved.

ok, this is really nothing but a bunch of he said she said BS. the people who I am interested hearing from are Kelly Gray, Mike Stone, and Chris DeGarmo, but mainly Chris DeGarmo.
Then we'll see what happens.
If any of those guys corroborate with what Geoff said, either people will continue to bash the Tates or the support will shift in his direction. But if they corroborate with what the other four have been saying, then Tate will be deeper in the hole he already has dug for himself.

It's fuckin' amazing what's happened to this band.

At one time they were huge and getting a ton of air play on radio and MTV.
They were selling millions of CD's, getting nominated for Grammy awards and headlining sold-out arena tours. Before grunge exploded their nickname was "The Pride of Seattle" and after grunge hit they really weren't hurt by it like most other bands of their era, their most successful years were during the height of the grunge era. The only hard rock/metal bands that were more successful than Queensryche between 1991 and 1994 were Metallica and Guns N' Roses.

To look at what's happened to Queensryche over the past 15 years and then watching this drama unfold is totally unbelievable considering where they were at one point. I've seen some bad band breakups and drama in the past but nothing like this.

To call this a train wreck is an understatement.

But at least everyone is talking about Queensryche again.

Queensryche with Todd LaTorre are scheduled to headline the main stage at a radio festival in Minnesota in two weeks, lets see if it actually happens.

The July 28 date is listed on the official Queensryche website which the Tate's still control, but if you go to the site for the festival it shows the band photo with Todd that was released after they made the announcement of the singer change.

Clutching at straws is Tate. The bottom line, is that Tate is a control freak that has run the Queensryche name into the ground, on top of that he assaulted and spat on his fellow band members during a show. It doesn't matter what he says or whatever way his lawyers try to spin it. It's over Tate

People like Firewind are all over the place. Working in the industry for record companies and management I have seen things first hand that I still have trouble believing. I have seen entire albums be redone by studio players because the studio did not like the playing (no credit given to the studio players). Sharon was not the first to do this. It was common place, it was common for song writers to get paid to give up writing credit their songs.

I have been in meetings were band members were being openly talked about being replaced by the record company. Not a fan of Warrant, but Jamie had some killer harder stuff working and he was told by his record company that "this album will never see the light of the day. We want more Cherry Pie, more Down Boys."

I have know several band members that were forced to leave bands because they were being forced give up writing credit.

A band is a business and when a business goes belly up or splits it is always a mess.

This guy things that he is more Queensryche then Wilton, Rockenfield and Jackson, together. I have enough of all the people surrounded by Geoff Tate. It's so clear who where responsible for Ryches disaster. Geoff Tate could not even write a good vocal melody. Chris De Garmo wrote all the vocal melodies. That's obvious. The lyrics of his latest songs are awful and the song titles as well. Geoff Tates vision for Queensryche has nothing to do with what Queensryche was until Promised Land. And what the fans liked about Queensryche. If someone believes Slater's arguments he can't listen to Michael Wiltons Demos. They are much better then anything writen by GT and his Gang.

This whole thing makes me sick. It's a nightmare and I just want to wake up!!! I love Queensryche and I just wish this never happen. Please God make it stop....It hurts me to read all of this. It sickens me to read all the crap people have to say about it. What's with all the hate??? Remember folks, there is three sides to every story.
His side, Their side and the Truth!

Thrash Til Death!!
