Former ICED EARTH, NEVERMORE Members Join Forces In New Project - July 13, 2012
Former ICED EARTH members Matt Barlow (vocals) and Freddie Vidales (bass, guitar) have joined forces with ex-NEVERMORE drummer Van Williams in a brand new project which is currently working on original material. A short taste of what is to come can be heard in the YouTube clip below.

Commented Barlow: "Well, though we are still in the early stages of progress, we are really excited about what we are hearing thus far. We hope that you have patience with us as we continue with this creative process and search for a record label that will help us bring our music to you all in the best way. Thanks for all your support.... More to come!"

Barlow announced his retirement from ICED EARTH in March 2011, citing his commitment to his family and the need for the group to tour more as the reasons for his exit.

Vidales left ICED EARTH earlier this year for reasons which were not disclosed. He says, "I know from the outside it seems nuts to leave a band with so much going for it, but from the inside it made a lot of sense to me." He adds, "I did not leave because Matt left or so we could work on this [new project], I also did not leave because of the heavy touring. I was actually glad that the touring had picked up. My reasons are private. The guys in the band know, and that's all who need to know."

Williams and guitarist Jeff Loomis announced their departure from NEVERMORE in April 2011 due to personal differences with the band's lead singer, Warrel Dane, and bassist, Jim Sheppard.

That would be awesome. Please Matt do something among the lines of your work with Pyramaze, which was absolutely perfect. Dont be afraid of using keyboards, they sound wickedly awesome combined with your voice.

Everyone always hates their boss, don't they? Some people can accept that you always have a boss, no matter who you are. Others always have to defy authority and bounce from job to job.

Other than the guy on the Howard Stern show (who has a boss named Howard Stern), I don't see any former members of Iced Earth doing better in their music careers after leaving Iced Earth.

Matt and Van....YES!! I noticed there is no guitar player yet? Which begs the question....could it be Jeff Loomis is on his way?? This would be every metal heads dream come true! Come on Jeff time to put your killer guitar skills to work on some actual songs again instead of instumentals. There couldn't possibly be a better fit or opportunity?

Freddie is playing all the guitars and bass on this. He's actually an accomplished guitarist as well, but I'm sure they'll be looking for a guitarist. Right now I think it's just rough demos & ideas being passed around & worked on, but the end result will no doubt be awesome.

Yeah this sounds promising ...
Unsure why so much bagging on Van from Dane .
Every time I have seen him he has been rock solid drummer and a genuine guy off stage with no rock star attitude.

So glad to have him back singing.

I think Stu Block did a good job on the new IE, but Barlow will forever hold a special place in my heart as THE voice for iced earth.

For me Barlow is the only voice for IE! Ripper is / was good and Stu has done well but Matt's singing has emotion and passion. I would take Matt over Ripper and Stu any day!

it is clear that these guys left because they didn't want to be under the hammer fist rule of Jon Schaffer anymore.

The last time I saw Iced earth (just before Freddie announced he was leaving) Freddie did not seem to be happy to be there at all. Compared to other times I have seen them his stage presence and enthusiasm was very much muted.

They don't want to throw Jon under the bus because they are still friendly (Matt is his Brother in law) but it really isn't hard to figure out.

Barlow left because he is a state cop and only gets a limited amount of vacation per year. It was ridiculous that IE was limited to playing a few weeks out of every year. There is just no way it could work long term for a band of their stature. They need to tour months out of the year every year to make it worthwhile.

As far as Freddie, certainly sounds like a personality thing with him and Schaffer. Not the first time and probably not the last.

No doubt Schaffer is a tough person to work for, but when you ar the sole creative force in the band, you play by his rules.

Schaffer has totally undermined himself with the high rate of turnover in the band, however. I wonder if he realizes this.

Yeah, I think Jon is a cool guy, but it's obvious he's not easy to be in the band with for any long stretch. So you can imagine what the Queensryche guys went through for 20 YEARS under Tate. That guy makes Jon look like a complete amateur.
