DEF LEPPARD To Celebrate 25th Anniversary Of 'Hysteria' On 'In The Studio' - July 11, 2012
North American syndicated rock radio show "In The Studio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands" celebrates the 25th anniversary of DEF LEPPARD's twenty million-seller "Hysteria" album with lead singer Joe Elliott and bassist Rick Savage.

Attempting to follow-up the seven-times-platinum "Pyromania", DEF LEPPARD were hard at work recording their next album by Christmas of 1984 when a tragic car accident would leave drummer Rick Allen without his left arm. It would be another two and a half years of intense work in the studio before "Hysteria" would finally be released to a long-awaiting fanbase.

Joe Elliott tells "In The Studio" host Redbeard about a comical encounter with legendary THE ROLLING STONES singer Mick Jagger that drove home the four-and-ahalf-year gap between albums.

"We had Mick Jagger come in and do two solo albums in the same studio complex when we were doing ['Hysteria']. [Elliott imitating Mick] 'Bloody hell, you guys are still here? Weren't you here doing that album when I was doing 'She's The Boss'? Well, I've done that one, I've toured. I've had two kids, done a STONES album and toured, and now I'm back doing my next solo album and you're still here!"

The DEF LEPPARD "Hysteria" "In The Studio" program will air on radio this weekend on over 50 radio stations across North America.

Can't believe it's been 25 years since this came out. One of the best of the 80's.

Pyromania was awesome, but sadly, Hysteria is sad...way overproduced and too damn commercial for my ears. Their best albums had 10 arms playing on them!

I loved the first 3 records. I was a kid who mowed lawns during summer vacation to save up money to buy cassettes from my favorite rock and metal bands.

When I put this stinking turd in my Sony Walkman and hit play, I just about shit my pants. "What is this shit?!?" Fast forward to the next song -- "TWO bad songs?!?" And again and again. The only song I could stand was 'Women'. It was the worst $7.99 I ever spent on new music, and I never bought anything from these clowns again.

Six months later, I had an almost identical experience when I took the bus to the record store to buy the Scorpions' 'Savage Amusement'.

well that proves you were just a stupid kid with no tatse in music. wa they sold alot of records so they are sell outs. they sold alot because they were great records. rocket was the only bad song on Hysteria and it was still an ok song.

You're in the minority on this site. Def Leppard' Hysteria is a terrible album, and if you like it, you're a queer.

I was in grade 12 when this album came out and though my friends and I had great expectations, it was a let down from their previous effort. After a number of months and many single releases which garnered heavy radio and mtv play, my best friend swore he would burn his LP. I remember having a few drinks one night and that was exactly what he did. It was symbolic cause we believed in what Leppard used to be. I have not purchased anything from them since that day on. It was sad to hear of Steve Clark's passing a few years latter but I knew they would never be the band they once were. I still listen every few years to Pyromania as it reminds me of school and old friends. Can't say that anyone really cares about the anniversary except maybe the odd stripper who made a lot of money to 'sugar'.

I have the same feelings as Dunlopred. We waited years for this album to come out, which today is the norm, but back then bands were pumping out new wax every year or two like clockwork. When the album finally came out, it was such a huge letdown to the majority of their early fans. It caught on with the glam metal chicks and pop music crowd which is why it sold so much. I never bought the album, or anything else from Def Leppard ever again. Between the horrible new sound and them getting blown off the stage by Krokus when they stopped here in Virginia during the Pyromania tour, I was done with the band.

Hysteria was and is Hysterical. The group died after Pyromania. There are no more Lp's after that imo. Nice Vivian how you wait till Dio dies and now youre trying to cash in on that too. Phoney shit!!!!!!

... it's a rock album that sold 20 million copies, so while some of you self-proclaimed critics may not enjoy it, a fairly large majority of people seem to have enjoyed it.

It is what Def Leppard and Mutt Lange sent out to create, the rock version of "Thriller." Tons of hit singles and album tracks that stand well on their own.

How many other rock bands have ever done this? AC/DC, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, U2, maybe Nirvana?

We didn't want a rock version of 'thriller'. We wanted killer riffs and great lyrics. Instead we got bubble gum. Chew it up, flavour gone, spit it out. Yeah they made tons of bucks but lost tons of fans. 25 years later we could talk about Leppard in the same breathe as a classic but choose to remember them as one of the biggest corporate sell-outs. If Steve Clark were alive today he might have changed the path of this band. Sadly didn't happen. Tesla wrote a song about him he was that cool. Great tune. Unfortunately we are left with Taylor Swift collaborations.

RedBeard...the man who killed Q102 in Dallas.

It'll be nothing new. It will be an edited version of an In the Studio that was done years ago and sent to radio stations.

Same as the Rush In the Studio for Moving Pictures. Rehashed 30 year old Q&A.

WTF!! Dude ive listened to rock and metal for over 40 years and have played guitar for 33 years. I was the guitar player for Sabre back in the 80's (whoopy fucking doo..I know). Im not a self proclaimed critic. Im giving my opinion (that just happens to be shared by most of the people on the planet) that Hysteria sucked ass. Give me Savatage, Annihilator, Testament, Coroner, Believer, Sanctuary any day!! Fuck all that other stupid hair band shit anyways. Pour some Sugar on Me???? What the hell is that crap. I think sugar was a code word for with the band for semen.

every one of those bands you named sucked ass! Leppard never claimed to be metal. even the first 3 records you love so much were melodic hard rock. pyromania and hysteria were 2 of the greatest hard rock records ever made which is why they still sound great all these years later. it may not sound like what you consider metal today but in the 80's that is what we called it. you can call it hair metal to try and degrade it all you want but it rocked and was a helluva lot better than no wave no talent shit that was the other music popular back then. compared with the flannel rock ..er grunge of the 90's it was 10 times better than stare at floor and whine about how life sucked being a rich rock star during that time.

A DOUBT, one of the best ROCK albums EVER! Just about EVERY song could have been a single and made it into the top 40. The haters on here have nothing better to do than to slag a great band, who came along and created a MASTERPIECE. Something bands like annihilator (Your kidding right), Testament (Who?), CornCob(WTF), Believer(LOL), Savatage(Who are these motherfuckers)? They will NEVER, if they ALL put out 20 more albums a piece in their lifetime, sell more copies than HYSTERIA! Now, "DON'T SHOOT SHOTGUN" losers!

High & Dry = their best album

Pyromania = commercial breakthrough, but still a good album.

Hysteria = fell off the cliff with over-produced, pop goop. Total garbage.

I love the term sell-outs. Ok you mean to tell me you wouldnt want to sell 20M copies of an album and tour to every freakin country in the world? If you said no your kidding yourself. Oh an Mutt Lange produced High & Dry, Pyromania & Hysteria.. I guess he sort of knows what he is doing.
