New FLOTSAM AND JETSAM Album To Feature Songwriting Contributions From JASON NEWSTED - July 11, 2012
Metal Army America recently conducted an interview with Michael Gilbert, guitarist and songwriter for American thrash metal legends FLOTSAM AND JETSAM. You can now listen to the chat in the YouTube clip below.

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM has set "Ugly Noise" as the title of its new album, which the band is currently writing for a tentative late 2012/early 2013 release.

When asked about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the new CD, Gilbert said, "I worked with [former METALLICA and FLOTSAM AND JETSAM bassist] Jason Newsted on a few songs, and he's given me some tips about some things and opened my view up towards how I look at my music and how I want the listeners to perceive the points I'm trying to make."

He added, "[Jason] is really passionate about music, so when I called him and talked to him, I just wanted him to help out with some lyrical stuff and hear some of the music I was writing. He's a great songwriter, too. I'm not sure if everything that he got to do in METALLICA, if he was restrained a little bit, I'm not sure about all that sort of stuff, but as far as with me, anytime he wants to write with me, he's got full rein and he's got absolute say-so in everything that happens. It's a 50-50 relationship, as it would be with Eric ['A.K.' Knutson], our singer, writing music with us, or Kelly [David Smith], our drummer."

Regarding the musical direction of the new FLOTSAM AND JETSAM material, Gilbert said, "It's probably the most mature it's ever been, but if you wanna classify it as close to any other record that we've done, it's probably gonna be close to [1995's] 'Drift'. If we were gonna make a record right after 'Drift', which was out fifth record, 'Ugly Noise' would be the next one — with this lineup, you know."

Funding for the next FLOTSAM AND JETSAM album is being aided by the PledgeMusic.com project, which encourages fans to contribute funds to the recording of albums and the artists themselves to donate to charity as a part of their fundraising.

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM last summer parted ways with drummer Craig Nielsen and was rejoined by Kelly David Smith.

The band's current lineup is the same as the one that recorded the "Cuatro" (1992), "Drift" (1995) and "High" (1997) albums:

Eric "A.K." Knutson - Vocals
Ed Carlson - Guitar
Michael Gilbert - Guitar
Jason Ward - Bass
Kelly David Smith – Drums

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM's latest album, "The Cold", was released in Europe in February 2011 via Nuclear Blast. The CD's cover artwork was created by Travis Smith, who has previously worked with OPETH, NEVERMORE, AMORPHIS and KING DIAMOND, among others.

"The Cold" was released in North America on September 14, 2010.

to the first three albums for the past few days. When the storm comes down is definitely their best. I couldn't get into any of their other albums since then. I'm hoping the new stuff will be closer to the beginning material.

I loved "Cold," and thought it was the most solid Flotsam release since "When The Storm Comes Down." If they are heading back to the whole drift era, then I really don't have much hope for the new album. Almost all the Flotsam releases after "Storm" (except for "Cold") were plagued with uninspired mediocrity. Don't get me wrong, there were certainly a couple good songs here and there, but none of these albums were complete. Really, who here can't wait to hear more material that sounds like "Pick a Window" or "Poet's Tell?"

I agree with you, I have got `Cuatro? and it is a damn good album, but I just am interested in the 2 last ones (apart form the 2 first ones of course, albeit the damn sound of WTSCD) because I have heard the ones in between and they do nothing for me, they sound uninspired and mediocre, and this is the reason why this band has not gained the popularity of others. `The cold? was a VERY pleasant surprise, it sounds damn fresh and dynamic, and DOD was a very good attempt to return to form. If they carry on like this, they can gain back more fans because this band deserves this after all this time.

There's nothing wrong with going in the Drift and Cuatro direction... Those were good albums. Hopefully the new songs will take the best of those and add something extra.

Mark Simpson seemed like a weird fit with the band so hopefully this time they'll back with more of that good stuff like the early days.

Lets be honest. The last lp they had that was any good was ''when the storm comes down''Eric voice is great.but the material was after the strom was not so great.I,m hoping for the best. But if it sounds like ''drift'' it can drift away.I do like the pledge music page though.

He INDEED was restrained, I still believe he did not play the bass on AJFA (chuckling) and his musical contributions might be from other bands, because in Metallica we all know who the main songwriters are. I wholeheartedly respect the guy, just wish him the best and I hope he does his best to contribute for the new Flots album. He deserves it for all he has gone through. Flots till death, cannot wait for the new tunes!!!!!!

... is being underrated by some as a songwriter. I mean, the last F&J album simply rules and is amongst - if not - the best album they ever did.
