BEHEMOTH Frontman: 'Everyone Should Get Cancer One Day And Learn From It' - July 8, 2012
Aftonbladet journalist Mattias Kling conducted an interview with guitarist/vocalist Adam "Nergal" Darski of Polish extreme metal veterans BEHEMOTH at this year's edition of the Getaway Rock festival, which was held July 5-6 in Gävle, Sweden. You can now watch the chat below.

On how his battle with a life-threatening form of leukemia has changed him as a person:

Nergal: "I would say in many ways — too many to mention, actually… in numerous ways. It made me a better person, for sure. On a mental level, spiritual level… pretty much anything. Physically, I'm stronger than ever, too. It may sound controversial, but I would say that everyone should get cancer one day and learn from it, you know what I mean?! Obviously, I don't want anyone to get sick. It's more or less a metaphor for people to realize how much potential they can unleash if they want to, and [for them] to realize their potential."

On the progress of the songwriting sessions for the next BEHEMOTH album:

Nergal: "I can't tell you much, because there's not much done yet. There's definitely new ideas, and I would say we've got roughly five [song] skeletons ready. We wanna start working collectively [on new material] in the upcoming weeks. I'd say that September 2013 is a very realistic date for the release date for our next record."

On whether fans can expect to hear "the same BEHEMOTH" on the next album:

Nergal: "I don't know what you mean [when you say] 'the same BEHEMOTH,' because we've never really sounded the same on any record, you know what I mean?! Every time it was a huge challenge and every record sounds very much different, so I'm more than sure that this new one is gonna sound much more different than 'Evangelion' [2009] sounded from 'The Apostasy' [2007] and [on that album there] was already quite a difference, so I would say just be patient, wait and be surprised."

Definitely understand him. I think everyone should have to deal with depression at some point so they can learn to appreciate things more when they're healthy as well.

A NORMAL human being with any sort of compassion for his fellow man would NEVER wish something like that on someone else. I understand the point and how he was trying to make it....but that's a fucked up thing to say. So fuck him. I wish I had the opportunity to say that to him personally. I know people who've died from it.....and I'd LOVE to let him know how this insignificant person feels of his statement.

I get the point he was trying to make as well, but he sure as hell could have said it more tactfully...

...but before jumping to conclusions, perhaps it sounds harsher than what he meant because it was translated to English.

He's Polish, and Aftonbladet is a Swedish publication. Sometimes translations come out awkwardly...not to mention that his words could have potentially been translated TWICE (from Polish to Swedish to English), which would make the point he was conveying even more garbled.

I agree with dblbass 100% on what he said about Nergal. Even though his point about appreciating things more and realizing one's true potential make sense, wishing cancer on anyone is a fucked up thing to say to ANYONE. All the chemo, the sickness, the pain, the hair loss, and feeling like your body is being eating alive one day at a time is something that NO ONE should have to go through. I'd like to tell him that to his face because I think he is fucked for it and any of ya all die hard Behemoth fans who dislike what I say about Nergal's bullshit comment can kiss my ass for all I give a flying fuck.

I liked Behemoth's music but could not stand the latest album at all. If your cancer taught you anything Nergal maybe it was that you take way to long to put out albums and also that you need to make a decent fucking new album.

Prior to Adam getting sick, he said a lot of douchebag things about people, society and the world in general.

He got sick - and survived, unlike so many others - and it seems like now he's back to his old, douchebag self.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a little hardship in life (for my personally, it was getting through 6 months of Fire Academy - did me a world of good), but wishing a potentially terminal illness on someone is completely moronic and idiotic.

This guy has about as much tact as a nuclear bomb.

I don't get it; are people stupid? If you get his point, than he doesn't need to be more tactful to avoid hurting your feelings, does he? Where's the logic in saying "I understand his point has no offensive intent" and then being offended? It's almost as if you were content reading up to a certain point and then made a conscious decision in your mind to ignore everything else. Give me a break. Yes, Nergal actually wants everyone to get cancer.

It's like no one bothered to read the second half of the paragraph after he said that part. He's not "wishing" it on anyone, he didn't state that once. He's saying it's a process of self-betterment to be put through a struggle such as that. Could he have used a bit less sensitive case? Sure. But he dealt with cancer himself and that's what he used to learn more about life, so he relayed that wisdom he had. As I stated in the first post, maybe something like depression would be a better case. Regardless, his point stands. His point isn't that he wants everyone to have cancer. It's that he feels this world would probably be a better place if people went through a hardship, such as cancer or anything else serious, and learned to appreciate life more, grow from it, and be a stronger person from it.

Probably a translation issue as someone stated - but this guy isn't known for tact either so who knows - most Satanist are just assholes. Having lost friends/family to cancer and having helped other who have beat it, I wouldn't nor would anybody who I know who had it wish that on anybody. It's an absolutely horrible thing to happen to anybody and I've been there when its ravished a vibrant young person's body and they have given up as death is inevitable, they are leaving small children and a young family behind - yeah, that's what we want everybody to experience - brain, lung, or breast cancer. Really, what a piece of shit. Fuck you Nergal and fuck cancer. Crawl back under the rock you came out from under and go worship Satan some more you prick. Why don't you call my friend who is in her 40s and just had a double mastectomy and may not make and is fighting for her life and tell her how this will make her a better person. She is tired, depressed, very very sick from the chemo, and doesn't need some asshole telling her that this will make her a better person. She is already a better person than you.

Yeah, he forgot the fact that he is publically known. His illness was heavily publicized and that helped him to find a donor really fast and be treated by the best specialists in the country. Normally in Poland people have to wait for months and months for a donor and many of them just die waiting. So give your words of wisdom to these people, asshole.

This is easily the most offensive thing here. Guess what, I've lost family to cancer. I have family battling cancer right now. I've had cancer scares myself. A little thing called *reading comprehension* means my precious feelings were spared by the big, evil Nergal who wasn't actually wishing illness upon anyone. You're a joke.

This guy just continues to be full of himself. This quote from him speaks volumes, that he really learned nothing from his experience. Who the hell is he to make statements like that. I too, get his point, but there is no excuse for using his own experience with cancer and wishing in on everyone else. There are millions of people striving to be better human beings, that work hard every day for the human race and for the good of others. Nergal is just a selfish, ignorant, and one minded individual. Everything has to be about him. So wake up Adam Darski, the world does not revolve around you. You're nothing more then a whiny little bitch, with idiotic haircut. Stick to singing country, it's way batter then your 'fork in a blender' with a sound of a slaughter bull voice over. Eat shit, motherfucker!

It's a metaphor: Nergal is a smart guy.

He's implying that humans are too much worrying, hesitating, under-estimating themselves to enjoy the gift of life and usually it takes them to go through horrible things to realize what they were missing.

Maybe he was too straightforward with words but it's what it is; stop whining, unleash your inner potential, that infinite potential that you constantly try to hide and use in auto-destruction and you'll surprise yourself.

Ha ha ha ha I havent had such a good laugh in a while. The only thing I can say is this dude lucked out big time with respect that he had all kinds of people pining for his cause and working hard to find him a match. Most people dont have the support he had and dont find a match and die. I never understood why people put so much focus on him, its like they dont have lives or something.

One thing is for sure, Ronnie James Dio would never wish cancer on anyone even if it is just to try and make people understand his point. Nergals statement should of been rephrased " Because of what I went through, it has made me a stronger person" vs " I wish everyone would go through this so they can understand what I went through" What a douch!!!

Ronnie was a fighter and had dignity till the end which is why when I heard about his death ( and after crying for hours and days) I made the INSTANT decision to go to the funeral in LA and it was the most proud metal moment of my life. \m/

Nergals existance doesnt influence me in the least.

The thing is, he assumes every cancer survivor reacts to diagnosis or treatment like he did. Some people's bodies survive cancer, but their minds "die" in the process. You're going through hell, and it might not comfort you to know that hell can happen to you (again) -- on Earth.

I had a tumor and it was removed. I'm grateful every day that I have that I am breathing on this earth.

And it humbled me. As someone who works out 3 days a week for 27 years and ate healthy, I thought it would never happen to me. But it did. And I don't take anything for granted anymore because of the tumor I had.

Yes,he could have worded his sentiment differently but kind words rarely resonate with people as far as motivation is concerned. Positive thinking is a good thing. If he has tested his will and resolve and come out with more strength good for him.He is also not a Satanist but more into Thelema. If anyone has ever seen liner notes, song lyrics, etc they'd have noticed. As far as his positive thinking as far as saying he's strong etc that could be true or he could be using NLP to keep himself healthy. Words and emotions play big into disease causes and healing. I'm surprised that someone as sick as he was has recovered so well in this amount of time.I'm sure the new album will be good.

You know, after watching people post on this all day, and pondering on what Nergel said about everyone getting cancer, I had to come back and post yet again.

First off, what people say about folks like Iommi and DIO (RIP) is so true. People can not deny that even Ronnie had his egotsitical moments as well as Iommi (although not as often) but overall they were damn good people and although not perfect did nothing to deserve getting cancer. Nergel you could not lick the bottom of either of their shoes music wise you self rightous fuck. I personally think your a douchebag person wise and even though I don't like you personally I would not wish cancer on you.

Truly, whenever a famous rockstar gets cancer, the whole world is appauled and concerned for their well being but, looking past just rockstars, lets look at some of the hundreds of thousands of GODD CARING people who did nothing to deserve cancer and death yet it happened. Why would you even begin to be so fucking heartless in making a comment like you made. maybe you did not mean for it to come out like it did but the point is you were careless all the same.

As of today my two Behemoth CDs are gonna be used for 22 target practices and I will never listen to your music again. Maybe your cancer will come back and this time it will fuck you over and if it does, go back and think about this comment and remember how fucked it was for you to say it or wish it on anybody. FUCK BEHEMOTH and thumbs down my post like many did my first one lol. truth hurts and I don't like heartles pricks so deal with it
