JON OLIVA Talks SAVATAGE And Future Of JON OLIVA'S PAIN In New Video Interview - July 8, 2012
Metal Blast recently conducted an interview with SAVATAGE and JON OLIVA'S PAIN mastermind Jon Oliva. You can watch the chat below. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow.

Metal Blast: Why did you decide to do a tour focused on SAVATAGE's "The Hall Of The Mountain King", instead of playing material from JON OLIVA'S PAIN?

Jon Oliva: "It was an idea that Chris [Kinder; drums] and our tour manager came up with and they told me about it. I thought about it and I was, like, 'You know, that would be fun.' Because we haven't done a new JOP record since Matt [LaPorte, guitar] passed away. We really didn't know what we wanted to do, but we wanted to come out and play a little bit. I thought that since the old albums are just reissued by Edel, it would be good to give them a little kick in the butt. Plus I've never done it before. I've been doing this a long time, so it's something I've never done before, and that was kind of exciting to me. I was like, 'Wow, this is different.' And the fans have been loving it. It's been going over really good, so I'm really happy about it."

Metal Blast: Is SAVATAGE now really over?

Jon Oliva: "Everyone keeps saying that, but what I don't think people realize is that SAVATAGE is still really together, it's just a different band [TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA] with more people. But if you look at it, it's Jon Oliva, Paul O'Neill, Al Pitrelli, Chris Caffery, Johnny Middleton, Jeff Plate… I mean, everyone from SAVATAGE is there on all the records, and on the road, most of us are there. And [TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA] is doing so well, it just doesn't make sense to stop it to do a SAVATAGE thing. If you wanna hear SAVATAGE stuff, come see me, because I'm the original singer, so me doing SAVATAGE is gonna sound more like SAVATAGE than anybody but SAVATAGE. That's why I come out and do it; it's for the SAVATAGE fans. I play the SAVATAGE stuff because I love to play it, and don't really see a SAVATAGE thing happening, just because of how popular the [TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA] has become and the time that it takes to do this stuff. It's just really not feasible. Unless you're gonna do an album and then do a tour, but there you're talking about a year. 'Cause we're not just gonna throw something together just for the money, because we don't need the money. SAVATAGE, believe me, was never about the money, and neither is JOP about the money. It's about the love of playing and for the people and playing the songs. I'm not making any money out here — I'm losing my ass. But I don't care — I'm smiling and I'm having a good fucking time.

Metal Blast: What's in the future now for JON OLIVA'S PAIN?

Jon Oliva: "We're gonna do an album, but I've got some weird ideas that I wanna try. I just don't wanna do 'another' JOP record, I've done four of those already. I wanna do something different. I've got some material that I've wanted to put out for a while that I'm gonna have a talk with the record company about, maybe putting something out quickly, like in the next four or five months, to give me more time to do this next JOP record, because I want that to be special, and I've got some guest friends from other bands that are gonna come in and play on certain [songs]. I'm gonna do a double… I'm gonna do a regular JOP record and then a bonus disc with guest stars, kind of like the AVANTASIA thing but not like a whole story and all that. [Tobias Sammet] does a magnificent job, but I don't have that much fucking time [laughs] to write a whole story, so I'm just gonna have some friends that I've talked to from various bands come in."

Hey Jon, TSO is not Savatage and lets not kid ourselves TSO is all about the money. Your voice sounded like shit at the Tampa show. Get healthy and get your shit together.

Jon should not say "Everyone keeps saying that, but what I don't think people realize is that SAVATAGE is still really together, it's just a different band [TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA] with more people. But if you look at it, it's Jon Oliva, Paul O'Neill, Al Pitrelli, Chris Caffery, Johnny Middleton, Jeff Plate… I mean, everyone from SAVATAGE is there on all the records, and on the road, most of us are there." So Jon, I guess that means that next time I go see TSO at the big 15,000 seat arena here you guys will be playing some actual Savatage songs in your 3 hour set. Right?! Otherwise Jon, don't spew that kind of bullshit to your fans, we are smarter than that!

Hey TSO slaggers, I'm sure you're too busy thinking you're more "metal" than the next guy, but have any of you ever listened to TSO's music or seen them live? If you had, you'd know that Savatage is indeed alive, and well respected, within Trans-Siberian Orchesra. Maybe it's not the "Sirens"-era stuff, but everything since "Mountain King" onward has popped up in some form within TSO. How could it not, with Paul O' Neill and Oliva at the wheel? Plus, you've got 4/5 of the best Sava lineup working within TSO! I too miss Criss Oliva, but the guy's riffs are blessed every night when TSO plays a song like "The Mountain."

All about the money? Well, I know I've heard Alex Skolnick say that the band is run by business men, not musicians. It's' funny he said that - only after he enjoyed a good several years as part of the winter tour! THe minds behind TSO are virtuoso musicians and writers, in every sense of the word. Paul O
Neill, Al Pitrelli, Robert Kinkel, Jon Oliva - master players and writers. If you look at the bios of any of the touring members, none of these people are amateurs. Do some research into TSO and the Sava legacy. It's pathetic to know that many people still think TSO is a "Christmas" band!

I know a few members of TSO. I have seen the show twice. They really do know what they are doing.

Ok so make the next TSO album more focused on Savatage's sound and less focused on the whole "broadway stage score" sound,

Jon the FANS are asking for a real SAVATAGE cd...the FANS want one last go around to put the band to "rest" in our minds, don't do it for "the money" do it for all of us fans who supported Savatage from looong before Hall of the mountain king and Gutter Ballet broke big and who continue to support the band til this day...

A cheeseburger loving man? You guys are fucking tone deaf, semi - literate dumbfucks. I rarely come on here and post, but - JO is a musical genius, and before any of you serial masturbating little cretins criticize him in any way whatsoever, put up even one musical idea that can stand next to the master...........

I love Savatage a lot, too, but let's get real. It is hard to stop a money making machine. Call it selling out, if you will, but if you stumbled upon an enterprise that many people went crazy for, that paid you way more than you were previously, where you still had majority creative input....well....it would be hard to drop it all for a tour with your old buddies...who you're still working with, anyway. I understand it sucks from an emotional standpoint, but like he said, you can check out JOP. Also, please make a new Savatage record. Ha!

With all due respect to Poets and Madmen, Handful of Rain, Wake of the Magellan, Dead Winter Dead albums....Edge of Thorns is the last Savatage album. There will never be another like Criss Oliva, and I would like to remember him fondly that way.

Savatage died with Chris. They never had a guitarist after him that could come close to how or what he played. I'm happy he isn't dragging out the Savatage name anymore.

Sorry Jon, but TSO is not Savatage. TSO was magic in the beginning, but the magic has been buried under a mountian of lights, pyro, and lasers. Night Castle didn't live up to the hype and had way too Savatage material that had been spit shined for mass public consumption. The Mountian is Prelude to Madness rerecorded. Jeff Scott Soto did a nice job of singing the (slightly altered) Savatage material, but he's not Savatage. Admit it, Chris Caffery was right. Christmas Killed Savatage.

Zak Stevens, Jon Oliva, Chris Carffery Johnny Middleton and Jeff Plate are Savatage!

NOT Al Petrelli !!

Not JOP Not C2C NOT TSO!!

If Jon Oliva alone was Savatage then JOP would sell out every show but their broke according to Jon !

TSO playing watered down Savatage songs with completely unknown musicians that aren't part of the legacy is a farce a fraud!

Savatage is a much GREATER band than TSO will ever be!

When will TSO have made enough money to allow Savatage to exist for 1 cd and tour??

Is paul Oneil so greedy that he can't grant Savatage fans 1 cd and tour?

If Paul Oneil won't let them play under the Savatage name they made famous then he's the "Devil in Chrismas Clothes" hasn't he taken enough from Savatage? From Savatage fans??
