SLAYER's KING Says It 'Should Be A Real Quick Process' To Complete Songwriting For New Album - July 6, 2012
Steve Appleford of RollingStone.com conducted an interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King at the opening show of this year's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival on June 30 at San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernardino, California. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On returning to the studio in August to complete the songwriting process for SLAYER's next studio album, for which two songs have already been recorded:

Kerry: "If I get off my ass and start writing again on the road — since we've been in Europe, I keep trying to work on lyric ideas, maybe some leads, and fixing songs that didn't work correctly — it should be a real quick process."

On whether guitarist Jeff Hanneman — who in January 2011 contracted necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, and has been undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and intense rehab since — will rejoin SLAYER on stage and in the studio in the near future:

Kerry: "He's rehearsed with us a number of times. He tried to do the Fun Fun Fun Fest [in Austin in November]. That's the last time he tried to get out and do a show, and he's just not there. It's no secret we're very intricate, especially rhythmically. But he can't do that yet. . . After Mayhem, we'll re-evaluate and see if he's any closer. We're planning for him to come back and the door is open, because it's his fucking gig. If he can play, Jeff Hanneman is going to fucking be here, and I'm stoked about that. I love playing with [Jeff's temporary replacement] Gary [Holt from EXODUS], and he's doing a killer job, but if Jeff came back and said 'I'm ready,' I'll check him out to see that he's ready, and off we go."

Slayer is one of my fav bands, but I have little intrest without Jeff, he is the spine of Slayer. Each member brought something to the table, that made Slayer insane and unique. It's like the beatles without Paul McCartney. Jeff brought Slayer to the darkside with the music and not cheesy lyrics about the devil.

...we all know that you're not one of the most intricate guy in your talking, we all know you're a straight talking guy and so on...but...

"I'll check him out to see that he's ready"

I think that comment looks condescending, however I look at it.

You should have said:

"We'll check the shit out together with Jeff to see that he's ready, he needs to be happy with his own capability, it's not just up to me"

But it's OK, Kerry. We know what you meant anyway. We also know that Tom has stated that "there's no way we'll going to make an album without Jeff, who's an integral part of the band".

"There's no way we'd go into a studio without him," Araya said. "As a band we're not going to do something without him. He's an integral part of the band. We require his musical skills, his writing skills. He's an integral part of the band. So we're going to hold off until he's at 100 percent and can join that process and be part of it."

An all written by KK Slayer album does not appeal to me in the least.

An album written all by Jeff on the other hand would likely be another Slayer classic.

as long as tom araya continues to do that goddamn awful yelling. he used to have the most awesome voice, but now he just yells like in that psychopathy red song and all their other shit since seasons. that shit is horrible, no matter what theyre doing musically i turn it off because its that awful when hes yelling. if he went back to the old way, itd sound a hundred times better. and its not because hes "old"- it takes MORE effort to do that stupid screaming then it does to do his old, killer sing/talk sinister style.

If Jeff is out of Slayer that'll change a lot. It's not like it matters much, Slayer's probably already written their best songs and maybe Gary's influence would add something else. I would like to see the original line up again.

KK, if u do all the writing, it reduces the quality and sounds like you and not Slayer. Tom sounds unconvincing when singing your words and you say fuck way too many times. It has no impact. Surely Jeff can write even if he can't actually play 100% yet. Get off your ego trip

Both God Hates Us All and Christ Illusion are killer records and they are both mostly Kerry. To my knowledge, he played most of the guitars himself it sounds tight as fuck. Two of the best records ANY of the "Big Four" have done in the last 20 years.

Kerry carries the Slayer torch 24/7 and pretty much always has.

SLAYER Drummer: Nine Songs Written For Next Album - Mar. 28, 2012

The Nervous Breakdown: So what's happening with SLAYER?

Lombardo: "Writing new music. Kerry [King, guitar] and I are writing
new material. We have nine songs and everything's moving forward."

--> So, 3 months ago they had 9 songs that they were working on. Dave said that "he and Kerry were writing new material". What about Jeff? Were those 9 songs first started with Jeff in the studio and then kept worked on with Dave and Kerry only in the studio while Jeff returned to some more rehab OR has Jeff been out of the studio altogether? Why aren't they saying it plainly? Why aren't the media people asking it plainly?

My question is:

While Jeff hasn't been able to tour with Slayer lately, has Jeff still participated in the writing process of the new album? Has he been in the studio with you?

They should take the advice I gave to Anthrax and just stop rushing stuff and put some actually art into their art. The same goes for Megadeth. Nowadays these guys can only write around their business schedules. What happened to the days when bands were actually inspired and wanted to create a piece of art, not a product that's rushed and uninspired?

King is basically saying he will write a Slayer album when he motivates himself out on the road. He also says that he will pretty much do most of the work in the studio as well. Great KK, you are a talented man and Slayer is your baby. That would be really impressive if your output after Divine was any good. And those sunglasses are fucking retarded.

Next Slayer record = Araya will scream some idiotic unmotivated vocal tracks, doesnt care, he probably only stys with them for the money. Lombardo will do his drum tracks, doesnt care much either. Kerry King will record all guitar tracks himself and it will sound as disharmonic and hectic as it can be. Fidelman will butcher the shit out of it and he will make sure it will sound as amateurish as it possibly can be. Throw in a sterile pro-tools production and we are done.
How i miss old Slayer when they were still on top of their game...

... catchy riffs and songs that would get stuck in your head for days? Remember when Tom had more to his voice than ONNNNNNNE MOOOOONNNNOOOOTOOONNNEEE SCRREEEEEEAAAMMM? Remember when they actually mattered? It's along time ago in a land far, far away. You want a stark reminder of how bad things are. Listen to any of the first 4 albums and then listen to anything post 1995 from them and hear how far the mighty have fallen. Kerry has indeed been Slayer for years and because of Jeff's lack of input, Slayer has literally "gone to hell" ... and it's not a good thing.

Pray for Gary to write some riffs on this next album.
