SCORPIONS Guitarist Wants To Keep '80s 'Spirit' When Resurrecting Unfinished Songs - July 5, 2012
German hard rock veterans SCORPIONS spent the first three months of this year in the studio with producers Mikael "Nord" Andersson and Martin Hansen resurrecting a dozen unfinished songs from what some people believe was the band's best and most creative period — leftovers from the albums "Blackout" (1982), "Love At First Sting" (1984), "Savage Amusement" (1988) and "Crazy World" (1990) — for an album that is tentatively scheduled for release in 2013.

"We will dig in again and maybe have a selection of 16 to 18 songs and pick the best 12 from those," Jabs tells Billboard.com. "It's actually very good material." He adds, "We're doing it the way we are recording albums today, but the basic ideas, the riffs, the feel, the way they were written and arranged, we try to keep as much from the old recordings as possible. Thirty years later no one would come up with these ideas we came up with when we were younger, so we want to keep that spirit in there."

According to Jabs, the idea for the project "came from the fans. They were the ones saying, 'There must be some extra material from those days,' and they were right," he says.

The guitarist recently told ArizonaRepublic.com about the project, "There's so much strong material, but it hasn't ever been finished, especially the lyrics. They're like 'Blah blah blah blah blah.' It was recorded like you would record a demo, no click track, anything. But the vibe is great because it's from the time when we were starting out. Everything I played back then, I remember when I found a new riff, I would get excited. It's slightly different today because I know it all. I've heard it all. So it's much harder to get excited about the simplest or sometimes half-genius riff. But there was a definite spark in those old recordings and the idea is to redo them with today's technology and take it further as a tribute to the fans."

Normally I get really tired of people saying so and so is underrated, but let's face it, Matthias Jabs is the shit and no one ever talks about him. I guess living in the shadow of Schenker and Roth didn't do him any favors. But he totally fucking rocks! Amazing guitar player, great stage presence, always smiling and cool as fuck. Totally underrated!

Makes sense. At this late date, their best bet is to go after the "no good music after 1990" crowd, skullets, Camaros and all.

does it mean that they're going to go on yet another farewell tour?

I saw them again just four days ago in Toronto, two years after I saw them on their (supposed) farewell tour.

I kan't stand this Kiss komplex that some bands have...or maybe they're just going to milk it till they can't.

First, you obviously don't know the difference between "then" and "than", you illiterate fuck.

Second, how dare I compare them to Kiss? If I had compared them to The Who or The Rolling Stones would that have made you feel better?

Lastly, I like the Scorpions. I just don't like being lied to...which obviously you and Evil Twin don't seem to mind.

So you're going to pay to see them every time they come around and complain each time that they won't stop touring? You're not the sharpest blade in the drawer, are ya?

No, but as a fan, I just don't like being lied to, shit for brains; and it bothers me because it makes one of my favourite bands act and sound like Kiss (among others). But you obviously don't seem to have a problem with that...just like the Kiss sheep.

-------------------

April 22, 2010, Goldmine magazine interview:

Goldmine: So, Klaus, is this really farewell?

Klaus: Yes it is.

Goldmine: So it's not going to be like a Rolling Stones farewell--this is definite?

Klaus: Yeah, it wouldn't make sense to announce it. There are a lot of artists out there playing that kind of game.

Xanadu2112, this is still part of the Farewell Tour. The tour started in 2009 and was stated that it would span three years' time in total. They just happened to fortunately grace the States twice during the Farewell Tour, something I'm quite pleased about, as I get to see them again tonight!! The reason for three years was so they could take breaks in-between the legs to avoid getting burned out as they're getting older and it's getting more difficult for them to tour for long durations of time.

Savage Amusement blows all 3 other albums mentioned away. I really like Taken By Force, Virgin Killer, Savage Amusement, Face The Heat, and Sting in the Tail. New album will be great. Cannot wait!

Maybe it's me, but if ideas have sat around for 30 years collecting dust, and none of them were a shot in the arm this entire time, doesn't that say something about the quality? If something didn't make Blackout or Love At First Sting, there was probably a very good reason.

How much stuff they have? Whether they should resurrect it, I don't know, as long as it isn't crap. But then again look at Van Halen, right. Used a bunch of old one's and the album rocks. Best album by them is LOVEDRIVE.

what happened to what Rudy said in March about they would cut extra finished tracks for each album and they had those in storage and were going to re-release old albums with those finished unused songs as bonus tracks..? Or maybe that's their next ca$h in?
