SLAYER's KERRY KING Talks Upcoming Album, JEFF HANNEMAN's Health In New Video Interview - July 5, 2012
On Sunday, July 1, "Metal Zone" host Nikki Blakk of the San Francisco, California radio station 107.7 The Bone conducted an interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King at the Mountain View, California stop of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour. You can now watch the chat below. A few excerpts from the chat follow.

On SLAYER's plans for the next few months:

Kerry: "We've got two [new] songs recorded that keeps floating around like maybe it's gonna be an EP, maybe it isn't. I don't know. I'd just as soon wait for the [entire new full-length] record to get done [before releasing any new material. After Mayhem, I think the plan is August and September, finish the [full-length] record. And unlike the rest of the modern world, when you do a record, it still takes [the record company] three months [to release it] from the minute you hand it in — I don't really know why. So, that being said, if it's done in September, it's not gonna come out in December, so it'll probably be out in January. After Mayhem, we've got another batch of shows — October/November, but nothing in the States. But then after New Year, I imagine, we'll plan the world domination thing again."

On whether guitarist Jeff Hanneman — who in January 2011 contracted necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, and has been undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and intense rehab since — is contributing to the songwriting process for the new album:

Kerry: "On the last record [2009's 'World Painted Blood'], it was kind of, like, [split] down the middle [between me and Jeff]. On the records prior, it was mostly me. This one's been all me so far. He's welcome to contribute. It's just a matter of him [putting] something [together] and getting it to us."

On whether Jeff or Hanneman's temporary replacement Gary Holt (EXODUS) will lay down the guitar tracks for the new SLAYER studio album:

Kerry: "Jeff hasn't done [any] recording [on SLAYER albums] in years — other than solos. I've played [all] the [rhythm] guitars [on SLAYER albums] since… man, the '90s. A lot of the bass, too. It's just that I play quick and I get to the track quick and I don't fuck around and take all day. So at the end of the day it becomes an efficiency issue and I'm very efficient."

On who is producing the new SLAYER album:

Kerry: "When we went it [and did those first two songs], we had Greg Fidelman [who produced SLAYER's 2009 album, 'World Painted Blood'] for a 10-12-day window — we borrowed him from METALLICA's clutches. That's why we went in and did those two songs. 'Cause I like working with him. He's a guy that could tell me to do it again and I won't ask why. . . And he gets what he wants and it's great."

On when fans can expect to Jeff back on stage with SLAYER:

Kerry: "After Mayhem, we'll evaluate Jeff again; that's all we can do. He practiced for, like, three weeks with us before… I think it was Fun Fun Fun Fest [in November 2011] — the Austin show we did. And it just wasn't there. That's just how it is — it wasn't there. He played the songs, but if you recorded it, you could definitely tell who's who. And after playing with Holt, who's nailing everything, you can't really take a step backwards. And it sucks to say if that is a backwards step, but if [Jeff's] been gone 18 months and he's gonna make a comeback, you don’t' want it to be a backwards step, you want it to be awesome. And I think he wants it to be awesome. So, as shitty a decision as it is, that's just how it is."

On Hanneman's brief onstage reunion with SLAYER on April 23, 2011 at the "Big Four" show in Indio, California:

Kerry: "He wasn't ready for that either. I think we all thought that that might jumpstart him and get him going down a more hardcore road to recovery, but he wasn't ready for that. He was supposed to play four songs, and I took two away that day. I said, 'Dude, don't show anybody your weakness right now. People are gonna be stoked to see it. If you go up there for four songs, people are gonna start focusing on you and they're gonna see that you're not playing that good. Do yourself a favor, do two songs, have your big fucking moment, and leave it at that."

On when he last spoke to Jeff:

Kerry: "I haven't talked to Jeff since the last time we rehearsed [with him]. But, I mean, that's not unusual. It sounds like, 'Ah, they're not talking.' But when we get off tour, we don't talk. Unless we're talking business. Everybody's grown up and they have their own friends, you know what I mean?! [After 30 years] we've got nothing to talk about. [laughs]"

So how did Slipknot diss KK? Not letting him on their stage? Whatever. Also, not surprised about Jeff at all because he's been phoning his live performances in for years anyway.

Man, Kerry is just completely devoid of tact or compassion.

I'm not slamming him for it. Fuck, he's in SLAYER after all...but it's just weird to hear someone be so matter of fact and not sugarcoat ANYTHING.

To sum up:
- Jeff ain't ready
- Jeff's playing sucks
- Kerry plays EVERYTHING in the studio except Jeff's solos
- Jeff and Kerry don't talk at all

Wow...heartwarming.

Chill the fuck out. That has never even been proven.

Doctors say that it was *likely* caused by a spider bite.

Read the reports on this site and elsewhere - they almost always say 'alleged' spider bite.

This was not caused by spider venom. According to doctors, his condition is caused by bacteria that enters the flesh through some wound. The story then, is that a spider bit him, left a hole in his arm, and them the open wound came into contact with the bacteria that causes NF.

The implication is that there may have been no spider involved. And judging by the location of the wound, even you might be able to figure out that a more plausible story might be the use of a dirty needle. I'm not saying that's what it was, I'm saying that according to doctors, that would make more sense than a spider bite. You can decide for yourself.

Read up before you call other people a jackass and make yourself look like one in the process:

From the link posted above:

The higher risk groups for contracting NF will appear to vary drastically from each other, however, there are a underlying commonalities such as a compromised immune sytem resulting in an inability to fight off infection.

Higher risk groups include:

- Individuals with recent cuts, scratches, injuries

- Alcohol Abusers

- Drug Abusers

I was actually being playful with the "jackass" comment. But I don't need to "read up" before I post on blabbermouth. Since I don't give a flying fuck what anyone thinks. And let's get real, if you talk out your ass on here you fit right in. As far as the spider thing goes, I was going on the information that Jeff himself provided. He said he was chilling in the hot tub and he felt the bite. But it is interesting that you bring up the needle theory since I have thought this whole thing sounded suspicious from the beginning. And that would explain why they haven't been too eager to get him back as well. Very interesting!

If it wasn't for the scares on Jeff's arm I'd swear it was all a scam. It's been pretty obvious they're in no hurry to let him back. And at this point it seems likely they never will. I think Holt is fucking awesome, but Slayer without Jeff just doesn't seem right!

Songs Jeff has written:

At Dawn They Sleep (music)
Necrophiliac (music)
Angel of Death
Postmortem
South of Heaven (music)
Behind the Crooked Cross
Spill the Blood
War Ensemble (music)
Dead Skin Mask (music)
Seasons in the Abyss (music)

That's almost the entire portion of their "classics" setlist, so don't tell me Jeff doesn't write much.

Honestly, I'm glad Kerry is motivated to write and record, because without him, Slayer would've fallen apart years ago. Tom and Jeff just aren't as enthusiastic about the band as Kerry is.

Kerry's songwriting is definitely weaker than Jeff's, but hey, I'll take Kerry-controlled Slayer over no Slayer.

Jeff writes good tunes but I agree with the assessment of his live performance and "solos." Next time you throw on a slayer record listen to Jeff's solos. Same scale, same pattern, almost note for note on every song. Jeff has always been mediocre live as well.

Sucks that shit is not working out with Jeff. He's an iconic part of the Slayer mystique.

If he can't play, maybe they should let Gary go back to Exodus and call up Craig Locicero. Damn it, shitty news about Slayer and Forbidden both in one day. Fuck!

Screw that. Holt has paid his dues in Exodus and now in Slayer. If there's ever going to be an official replacement for Hanneman, Holt has to be it. I'm sure he wouldn't mind the pay raise. Exodus can be done when Slayer's off the road, or put on indefinite hiatus.

WOW, Kerry kinda threw Jeff under the bus. Been a Slayer fan since I was 12 and they are in my top 5, but Slayer without Jeff is not Slayer.

I think they should call it a day if Jeff is not coming back. I have suspected over the past 6 years, Slayer have been taking steps to making as much cash as possible for retirement. Do a few shows with Jeff and call it a day.

Hanneman's arm (according to both King and Araya in the past)
was almost amputated (Araya said all the flesh went off of it).
Doesn't need Sherlock Holmes to find out that's a lot of rehabilitation to do.
King also metioned Hannemans 2 songs on stage. He could barely play 2 songs good enough. Why should he do anymore.
Let the dude rehabilitate his arm and then come back and kick some ass.
And what's this about the whining that they don't communicate?
If you have stood by the same person for at work for over 20 years, would you like to be al good and jolly with that person on your spare time?

.... and you wonder why every album since DI has sucked donkey balls? There's your answer. Plain and simple. Look at the songwriting credits from '83-'91. Most of all of the classic Slayer tunes are written by Jeff.

The only hope for this band, is that Gary starts writing some riffs... other than that stick a fork in 'em, they're fucking done! (not that that hasn't been the case for at least a decade now.

Want real thrash? Listen to Vektor!

1. composing and playing are two different things
2. you interpret a story about king doing all the guitar since the 90s as 'Hanneman is the better guitarist'
3. every album since DI has been solid with a handful of great songs
4. therefore i perceive that your logic and your opinion, to use your own terminology, sucks giant donkey balls.

Used to worship this band in the 80's and early 90's but they've gone downhill big time. This new album will just be another average sub par album like the rest after Seasons especially if Kerry writes it all.
Kerry's songwriting blows, Jeff can't play anymore and hasn't played anything decent for years. They are continuing to use that hack Fidelman to produce the album?? Are they fking deaf?? Cant the hear how fucking shitty Death Magnetic and WPB sounded?? It's over and then some.

If Hanneman can't/doesn't come back, then the guys should do what other bands don't, end the band. Bury Slayer and then start up a new band with Gary, find a bass player, singer and if Lombardo isn't interested, drummer. Hate to see the end of Slayer, but perhaps it is time if the creative juices aren't there.

Just reading this, and I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, Kerry King is making himself come off as a total dick. I believe he thinks he "is" Slayer. So, it's not enough to tell everyone he's done all the guitar tracks, he has to dig on Araya too by saying much of the bass was his as well? You just "get it done quicker"? Come on dude, get a grip. If you're pissed off the way your band is going, leave. YOU'RE clearly the one in it for the money now, Kerry. Gary Holt plays circles around you.

It's funny how people think that if you've been playing in a band for 30 years that you would have to speak to your band mates everyday for over 30 years. It's also very odd that people who've been into slayer for as long as they say still don't seem to understand how Kerry king speaks his mind. I think it's good that Jeff is working on his guitar playing because there is no need to get up on stage if his chops are sloppy, he's been playing in slayer for a long long time and done many shows. comparing king and jeff's guitar playing is just stupid. They have both contributed to slayer's music and I personally do not care who wrote which song because the song is still Slayer.

Get well soon jeff

Perhaps Kerry is frustrated with the delay/having to wait. Could be more to the story/problem with Hanneman than has been said. Could be Kerry getting tired of answering the same question. Kerry doesn't hold back either, so it could be him just being his usual, dapper self. Whatever the case, this is starting to sound similar to the stories back when Pantera broke up.

Holt has Exodus, he's not gonna leave it.

I say hire Jeff Loomis. After 30 years, Slayer deserves a guitarist worthy of Lombardo and some decent solos.

As much as I love Loomis? playing, I do not imagine him in Slayer AT ALL. I could imagine him playing a solo alongside King and I cringe to think about it.

Jeff has written most of SLAYER'S best songs. Don't forget though he wrote 10 out of the 11 songs on Diabolus in Musica. Which is the worst album they put out.

I think Jeff's songwriting on World Painted Blood was VERY good, aside from perhaps The Human Strain, which was quite weak.

When he's engaged, he's still capable of being an excellent musician.

I think Kerry's songwriting can be very derivative and one-dimensional, but like I said, he's the only one with the passion and drive to keep the Slayer train rolling, and has been for over 10 years.

I give him a lot of credit for that.

As far as all of the speculation that Jeff acquired his disease from using a dirty needle (heroin)...I admit I thought the same thing myself, but I dunno, man.

That's a pretty fucking heavy charge, and there's been NO evidence that he's a junkie.

He used to use cocaine in the '80s, but who DIDN'T during that decade? Tom used coke back then too.

I just can't see Jeff hitting the stage and playing Slayer songs for 90 minutes as a junkie. Opiates make people near-catatonic.

I mean, it's POSSIBLE, but they clearly want to keep it private if that's what happened, so we'll never know for sure.

...in the late 90's/early 00's when Slayer, along with Pantera, could do no fucking wrong. Almost any statement toward either of those bands "sucking" in any way, was like indisputable proof being a false motherfucker. Say the wrong thing around the wrong guy & you'd be liable to get a bruise. In a way, I miss those days... I was pretty young, but every real fuckin metalhead I knew... if you liked Slayer & Pantera, you were alright.

Nowadays, it's cool to talk shit about both these bands... and y'know what, neither Pantera or Slayer are my favorite band, but they're 10x better than 99.9% of the other shit that teenagers are turning out these days. TDWP, for example. Kerry smells bullshit, and doesn't call it ice cream, so it's cool to see someone say what they think, without gettin' all PC about it, or being concerned about how people might interpret what was said. Sorry for the rant, but I felt compelled. Horns down, whatever, I don't give a fuck anyway.

Last two have sucked cause lombardo couldn't pop a pimple on bostaphs ass!!! Hanneman is my hero & after meeting Kerry I thought he was an arrogant ass just like the prick in this video!!!! Regardless slayer rules & hopefully they keep going for years to come!!!!

as to Kerry King's attitude regarding Jeff Hanneman. Look, I don't know what happened to him truthfully, but I'm giving Jeff the benefit of the doubt that he was bitten by a spider. A brown recluse will ROT your skin. If it got infected, then it could get really bad, really quick. As far as the drugs thing goes, if he took them, he took them. What's the big deal? To just throw Hanneman away like he is garbage and means nothing is like James Hetfield throwing away Lars. He can't do that because Lars has been with him from the beginning (no matter WHAT anyone thinks, no matter what ANYONE THINKS). To let Hanneman go after everything he has done for Slayer.....I'm sorry but this just ends the band for me. I love Gary Holt as much as the next guy, but the Hanneman/King combo w Lombardo and Araya is what makes this band go. What is truly sad about it is that I'm seeing this first hand how all of the LEGENDARY metal bands that I love are getting older and older and getting closer to retirement. What would the world be without Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Anthrax, Ozzy, etc? Nickelback, Black Stone Cherry, Shinedown, All That Remains, Hell Yeah, and Avenged Sevenfold? Oh, what a horrible thought!!!!!! To think, I've already lost Type O Negative and Ronnie James Dio music. I'm really thankful for the Legends. You guys need to appreciate their work more while we still have them around. Its sad.

I am in the early stages of recovering from a spider bite that I was told by surgeons told me almost killed me. I wanted to know why I didn't feel it bite me, [ it injects a paralyzing agent so you don't feel it] why it spread so fast [that is how the poison works] and how long I would be in recovery [ months and months an no guarentee] Mine was not even infected and it spread to a 3x3 inch hole in my back requiring emergency surgery within HOURS. So,you know, don't jump on the hate Hanneman bandwagon. You have no idea how he got like that. I sure wouldn't wish this shit on anyone.

PS:And as for Kerry....you guys know he's not exactly the master of tact and diplomacy. He's the guitarist in SLAYER.

Looks like this will appear on every song credit. At least let Araya do some words. But maybe he is the only one who is 100% keen and maybe he's the reason the others aren't. Who knows? Hanneman is a much better writer, but I admire how King says exactly what he thinks. I don't think him saying that he's played most of everything on recent albums is a boast, but just a fact

This is starting to suck big donkey balls. We all know KK is not the master of diplomacy but the simple thought of this makes me cringe and this band is having a very SERIOUS crisis at this moment:

- All songs by KK. Cannot Jeff contribute even if he cannot play live? Fishy.
- Greg Fidelman AGAIN wtf? Are they fucking deaf?

I just concur with the guy who posted this and my impressions (I just paste it):

- Jeff wrote most of slayer's classics (right, the BEST ones).
- Jeff has been sloppy live for years (sorry, disagree).
- His injury made this way worse (right).
- He's not shaping up, since he was already going south this happening makes it bad, also, him being lazy must have pissed the other guys off for years (maybe, no-oen knows).
- Tom is fed up with touring (yesterday´s interview says it, he misses his kids growing up).
- Lombardo has side projects (unstoppable, always busy).
- Kerry is the only one 100% slayer nowadays and he's in love with Holt (I see what you mean ahhhahhhahaa).

...is WAY more common than a lot of people realize, so that part doesn't surprise me at all.

But still, my bet is, Jeff isn't coming back. I got a friend who knows someone in the Slayer camp, and what I was told was yes, Jeff got bitten by a Brown Recluse spider and let it go too long before getting it checked out, and they're kinda not expecting him to come back. But they know that official news of "Jeff's Done" will hurt them business wise, so they're holding out hope. But from the sound of that interview, "hope" isn't KK's specialty, haha.

Now I realize that's still 3rd hand or so info, "friend of a friend told me" kinda deal, so smartasses, please keep your comments as such to yourselves. I'm just saying what a lot of us are thinking anyway. But if that IS what happened, it's no wonder he's still out of it. Google it, a Brown Recluse bite, especially left unchecked, VERY quickly starts to literally eat away tissue, it's a MESS.

I am surprised how many morons here are. Songwriting and recording is not the same. Jeff is a far better songwriter than Kerry but Kerry is a better rythm guitarist. That's why he does Jeff's parts in the studio. This way they simply save time. A lot of bands do so. But the songs remain Jeff's. Comprehend this.

Also, he's not boasting about it. He's just stating the fact. What's wrong with this?

Gary Holt Fucking Rules. Will be named as permanent replacement very soon, Hanneman is done. No miracle comeback here, Slayer moves on with a much better player and writer. Kerry is a no-nonsense motherfucker now, ain't he? Tells that shit like it is. Good for him, truth hurts, but it's the truth. I'd trade 10 Hannemans for one Holt anyday.

Granted, Gary Holt is the shit and technically I can think of no better replacement. But however things pan out, I sincerely hope that Jeff will at least stay on the team as a songwriter/composer if nothing else (like that dude from Immortal).

Between Kerry King and Jeff Spidermann, the latter was ALWAYS the superior songwriter. Jeff has written all the most memorable and classic songs Slayer ever had, and you bitches all know it!

Sucks because Jeff's a great song writer and he's Jeff Fucking Hanneman...however, he's been a sloppy player for quite sometime with a weak lead style, sloppy rhythm playing (especially compared to his contemporaries James Hetfield, Kerry King, Dave Mustaine, and Scott Ian), and guitar style that's failed to evolve. Playing with Gary Holt really exposed Jeff's current weaknesses and what was missing from Slayer since Seasons. Araya, Dave, Kerry, and Holt would make a great fucking Slayer album.

Jeff is THE songwriter in the band and has always been. The stuff Kerry comes up with sounds like me trying to write a Slayer song.

I do agree that Jeff's guitar playing was really suffering even before the bite, though. Last time I saw them live he wasn't even palm muting just kinda stumming, it was odd. He may consider throwing in the towel live and stick to writing for the albums only.

Jeff will never be kicked out of Slayer. If he is no longer part of them, it will be because he left himself.

Hopefully, he'll recover and be able to play again to the standards he is accustomed to.
