VINNY APPICE Explains VIVIAN CAMPBELL's Hostility Toward RONNIE JAMES DIO - July 4, 2012
Jeff Cramer of the Stone Cold Crazy blog recently conducted an interview with legendary drummer Vinny Appice (DIO, BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL, KILL DEVIL HILL). An excerpt from the chat follows below.

Stone Cold Crazy: Out of all the people who played with [Ronnie James] Dio, the one who seems to have the most hostility toward Dio is [former DIO and current DEF LEPPARD guitarist] Vivian Campbell. No one else who worked with Dio has that much animosity as Vivian does. I mean I've interviewed Craig Gruber, before Ronnie's death, and he had nothing but nice things to say about him. Sounds like something really bad had happened between the two.

Appice: Yeah. Well, it was chalked down to business. There was a lot of business decisions that weren't the best for the band, and as far as the way things were cut up and stuff, so Viv had a problem with that, and Viv was more hostile toward fighting and getting what he wanted. So, he didn't see eye to with Ronnie. Eventually, that got worse and worse and worse until Ronnie said, "I'm gonna get rid of Viv. I'm gonna get somebody else." I didn't think it was a great decision, because Viv was part of that band, part of the magic, and a great guitar player, but it was Ronnie's band. So, yeah, it just got worse and worse and worse until one day, it was the bubble burst, boop, Viv's out. So that was crazy. But they didn't see eye to eye on a lot of things, and didn't work together. It was more down to business. It wasn't a musical thing. It wasn't like DIO was gonna start playing disco songs, you know?

Stone Cold Crazy: Then you guys went on with Craig Goldy, to do "Dream Evil", although I did notice on "Lock Up The Wolves" there is a bunch of songs that were credited to you, even though by that point you and Jimmy Bain are credited on several songs, but by that point, you guys aren't even in the band anymore.

Appice: No, but "Lock Up The Wolves", we wound up writing — I rehearsed with the band and we wrote all the stuff that we wrote together, and so all my parts were there and my drumming was there, and, actually — and I think Simon Wright will tell you the same thing — that he copied some of the drum parts that I had because there were certain things that I played and he wound up playing the same thing, so I wound up rehearsing and writing with the band for the whole time. Just about when we were gonna go in the studio, that's when I left, I left the band. And Jimmy was there, but not as long as I was, so I forgot when Jimmy was actually not there.

Stone Cold Crazy: What made you leave DIO at that time?

Appice: Well, it was a little different people in the band. It was like Rowan Robinson, Teddy Cook. And they were all young, and it was like, "Wow, this is like an underage band almost." It was like, "Jeez, it's not the same band that I'm used to with Viv and Jimmy and Claude Schnell." So it was so changed that I thought maybe now it's time that I leave and I was hooking up with my buddy Jeff Pilson. He had a band called WAR & PEACE. And he was putting something together and I thought, "Okay. Let me hook up with him and try spreading my wings a little bit here." So that's what I did. So I decided to leave.

Since Vinnie is attempting to stay professional I will translate for my fellow readers -

Dio's wife was a bitch and tried to low ball everyone when it came time to dispense the cash. The guys in the band said fuck that noise.

You're welcome.

When I read negative comments from Dio's ex-members, it simply sucks! Especially when they are going to be playing and capitalizing from DIO's music!! From what I've seen, Vinny has been cool with Ronnie James Dio but hopefully the rest of the band can have a little more respect for his memory.

Speaking of that, not head trauma but photos, Cory, or Rory or Borax, or whatever the guy's name that runs Bmouth is...please also find a better picture of Mustaine to replace the one you post when you run those Dave Mustaine said something worthy enough for us to cut out, spin and put into a click-generating headline again. You know the one... the "i'm tired and have barely slept in 3 days and I may have just sharted" pic of Dave. Good stuff.

Yeah. I do understand the business reasons. But it was all about bashing Ronnie as a person, his despise towards heavy metal music and scene in general and loathe of being a hot guitar slinger. He wasn't very pleased of his position in Whitesnake either. And he has made a few complaints of overlooking his writing skills in Leppard too. And these are all very well documented in the past. He made very few attempts to explain the circumstances in the past, while Ronnie was still alive. I know he didn't, I've been following the press for 30+ years. Wonder why.
It seems like Viv was always the one who was hard to please and who didn't quite comprehend his position. Seems like he wanted to be an equal partner and lead the ship into a whole different direction. Away from all things heavy. Nothing wrong with that ambition but it was not something the bosses wanted. He was and is just a hired gun. Not the one who runs the show. How come he did not start a great new band with new faces and be a boss on his own? Yeah, I know he tried. No one was that much interested. He ran away from his guitar hero past as far as he could. Couldn't stand fans reminding him of that, but has recently found out, a thing that the stint in Thin Lizzy must have helped, that it was actually quite nice. But what can he do now after so many years of shitting on his past? Try to explicate the incidents look better for him. The only decent thing for him to do, to try and mend the things a little, would be admitting that maybe, once in a while, he wasn't that right nor smart. To say that he is sorry for stretching the thruth here and there along the way and saying really bad things about the very people that gave him his break to success. It would be an modest and respectful move. Might make him look a little better. But I think he's got his pride and mentality to keep that from happening.

I don't like the guy the way he's been acting in public but do think that he was and probably still is very good as a player. But I will not spend anything seeing his act nowadays. In my books he's ruined his reputation for good. :(

This is brought up every time a Dio Viv story is posted. But look at the other way, Viv has not written anything worth remembering since leaving Dio.
Riverdog, Shadow King, Gotthard, and Def Leppard some great stuff.

Vinny has been a major disappointment in the last few months. I at least knew where Vivian stood about the Dio thing. But in Dio passing he is almost stabbing him in the back.
I guess Vinny did not realize that the only reason he got later Sabbath gig's was most likely due to RJD recommendation. With the last run of Sabbath show where Bill Ward was not brought back you would think Sabbath would of contacted Vinny., but instead went outside of the Sabbath circle to get a drummer.
Vinny, have fun sharing your 25% share in Kill Bill Hill or whatever lthat lame project is called.

I love his work on the classic Dio albums, but maybe Viv should join up with Bill Ward and a maligned bass player and singer and show the world that they don't just ride the coattails of legends. If they're worth what they think they are, prove it by making it on their own.

Listem, Dio had am ego because he was genuinely GREAT and he knew it. If every single time you met fans and other musicians and theyI told you how great you are, and how much your music means to them, there is not a person here who would not start to get a big head.

That said, Dio is undoubtedly the nices metal legend I ever met. I saw him in a bar in Mesa, AZ after a show one night. I walked over and said hi and told him I thought he and Halford were the two greatest singers I've ever heard and I loved the show. Dio said, "You are right." (Or something along those lines.) He was great and he knew it. And, false humility is bullshit.

He was nice enough to chat with me while we downed a beer and then gave me a couple of autographs. All in all, I spent about 10 or 15 minujtes talking to him. Greatest experience I've ever had meeting a star.

When it comes to splitting themoney, remember Ronnie got screwed in Rainbow and in Black Sabbath. He didn't get equal cuts there. In that case, you can understand why that happened in Dio too. Ideally, it would've been all for one, one for all and taht kind of crap. But, it was Dio's turn to finally get some financial seciurty from what he wrote.

The facts are clear (and have been for over 25 years). There was some animosity between Ronnie and Vivian. While Ronnie did make the comments at every opportunity that Dio was indeed a "band" (implying equals), the reality is that it was his band.

Vivian was certainly the beneficiary of being picked (at Jimmy Bain's suggestion) as the guitarist and there is no doubt that Dio the band wrote and recorded some significant albums.

That said, as it was Ronnie's band – with his wife as manager and business partner in Niji – the buck stopped with the Dio's. As was pointed out above, Ronnie hadn't been treated as an equal in either Rainbow or Sabbath. So, while the money was beginning to roll in for Dio (the band), it was at RJD's insistence they put the money into the stage shows.

So, bandmates wanted more and Ronnie wanted to invest in bigger/better arena shows.

No one is without blame in the final breakup of the original Dio lineup... Vivian rightfully wanted more money but was immature in his approach. Ronnie was looking at the big picture and was still the guy on the hook for financing the Last in Line and Sacred Heart tours...

It was a business decision first and foremost as well as personal differences that ousted Viv. It certainly doesn't matter if these guys were best buddies now. The facts are the facts and the music they created lives on forever.

When Dio passed so many people came out to say that he was one of the nicest, most genuine and warm people in metal and always had a nice word for everyone. Except Vivian. Vivian on the other hand comes off like an arrogant asshole. I've seen interviews since he's been in Def Leppard bitching about money and how he isn't making enough, etc. Seems very shitty for a guy who obviously has an issue with Dio to go out and make money off of his name and legacy.

Poor Viv, he's being hated everywhere he goes. Even with Def Leppard fans. He's a great guitar player but people just lost respect for him. He could've been one of the greatest most bad-ass guitar player in all of metal (Holy Diver, The Last In Line), now he's just some side guy in a pop metal band. Being ass-whipped by a shirtless Phil Collen on stage.

Never read any bad mouthing of Dio from Vinnie while Dio was alive. Lately he has had some negative things to say about Dio. Maybe Vinnie should remember he is best known for being in Black Sabbath, Dio and Heaven And Hell. What is the common thread there for Vinnie? Seems like Ronnie James Dio. I wonder why Vinnie was in any of those bands. Of course that is because of Ronnie James Dio. While Vinnie has played with Lennon, Derringer amoung others it is in the bands Ronnie James Dio was involved with that he is remembered for and where most of his celebrity comes from. Vinnie you never bit the hand that made you relevant when he was alive why now?

No one is perfect and I'm sure Ronnie was not but it seems really shabby Vinnie to be bad mouthing the man now especially when he can not defend his position.

was a great guitarist and had a unique sound that was perfect for Dio . "Dream Evil" was far superior to "Sacred Heart" and close to the first 2 albums in terms of quality (and Goldy helped Dio recapture the magic with "Magica"), it's just that at the time of its release the metal fanbase was moving towards the thrash metal bands that seemed (and were to be honest) far more exciting than the traditional metal bands. Even giants like Iron Maiden had this problem (they stopped being "cool" when they released "Somewhere in time" ) and it was obvious that Metallica (with masters), Slayers (with reign in blood) , Megadeth (Peace sells) , and more were capturing the fans imagination during 86-87 while bands like Dio, Accept , Judas Priest and more seemed like old news.

Things started to really go wrong for Dio when he replaced Goldy with that young guitarist (forgetting his name) and people like Bain and Appice left the band .

Vinny was talking retrospectively that Ronnie made some decisions that were bad for the Dio band's career. Firing Campbell was unnecessary and the album with Goldy, Dream Evil, unfortunately alienated fans of the first three albums.

When I was growing up, a lot of people in my social circle were into Dio from 1983. When Dream Evil came out they hated it because of the change in sound. They all bought the first three albums and I was the only one who bought Dream Evil. So Vinny is truthful here. It happened and there were consequences.

Like it or not, the original Dio fans who bought the records in high volumes stopped supporting as the years went by. That is a fact. Lineup changes hurt bands.

Vivian Campbell was a crucial ingredient of that sound. His playing was very unique and his riffs helped make Holy Diver the record it was. People loved it so much to put Dio the band in the arena/stadium league. Imagine if people got into Black Sabbath, and then Tony Iommi was replaced after three albums. It will hurt the band.

And Dio back in the early eighties were seen as a band rather than a solo project. Ronnie said it was a band too. So no wonder Vivian was pissed when things were not split as fairly as originally discussed.

Dio should have kept Vivian happy finacially. Because, the band had the perfect chemistry and possibly the next records with him could have built the band's career.

Dream Evil is ok, but guitar playing wise, it is not as good as Campbell's. Vivian played to Ronnie's strengths and live was amazing. Goldy is a weaker rhythm player than Vivian.

It is not just me. Metal Hammer Germany criticised the band when they played Monsters Of Rock in Germany. They said Goldy's solos were unmelodic which is true. Dio needed a melodic guitar player.

All I am saying is that retrospectively, Vinny and Jimmy were right in their analysis. Changing ingredients is a major risk and Dio lost a lot of their audience.

In hard rock music, the guitar player is as a major factor.

Craig Goldy is a great guitarist??????? Who else hired him after Dio. Vivian and Doug both were in demand. Not to say that Rowan was not fantastic, because that kid could really play and had dynamics.

David Coverdale had great tastes in guitarists and has played with the best.

No disrespect to your taste, but Goldy was a major f**k up live. If Tracy G got maligned then it is unfair that Goldy gets off scott free. Goldy as Jimmy Bain put was "adequate but never brilliant". Jimmy played with Ritchie Blackmore, Brian Robertson as well as Vivian Campbell. One thing about Jimmy Bain, is he knows what he is talking about.

Have you listened to Craig's Stand Up And Shout solo. He has changed totally and has played it the wrong way since 1986. He cannot comprehend the phrasing of the original solo.

Why am I saying this? Because Tracy G was criticised for not playing the solos exactly the same. So Goldy needs a kicking for that too!

As a rhythm guitsr player, Tracy G pisses on Goldy. Goldy live has poor musical dynamics and the sound is washed out. When Goldy is so stiff.

Here is the reality. When Tracy G was fired from Dio, the band was not in a great financial position. Ronnie had no choice but to go with Goldy because he is cheaper to have than a really top class player.

Tracy G ? Is that You...?

I think Goldy and G were very good for Dio..

Tracy G was more modern unique and individual... but from what i've heard had a hard time playing parts that he didn't write..which is ok.. I really liked his playing on Strange Highways.

Craig was a better 80's type shredder... and was, it seems very loyal to Ronnie...

You know, I get that none of us really get what exactly went on between Dio and Vivian but honestly I've seen late interviews with Dio concerning Vivian and he was still angry about the things that Vivian said about him in interviews, and Vivian did say some pretty harsh stuff. Now, maybe it was all true, I'll agree, I don't know.

However, this new band they're in is supposedly about showing respect for Dio's memory, and if Dio were alive right now and was aware that Vivian, a guy he thinks betrayed him, was alive and was not only in a tribute band for him, but capitalizing on his memory, he might not be too happy about it.

I don't know, it's not really a big deal either way but this should be about respecting Dio's wishes since it is his memory, and I thought that Vinny Appice of all people would have felt this way as well.

Guess Dio was not a bad seemed pretty loyal to Vinnie with regard to Sabbath and Dio.
