OZZY OSBOURNE Says 'There Was No Argument' Between BILL WARD And BLACK SABBATH - July 3, 2012
The members of BLACK SABBATH say that there's still a chance for founding drummer Bill Ward to return to the band. Ward has so far sat out the legendary metal act's reunion — not participating in the recording of a new album or live shows — due to his dissatisfaction with the contract he was offered. But singer Ozzy Osbourne told The Times. "There was no row, there was no argument. The door ain't closed. Whether we work something out up the road, I don't know."

Added guitarist Tony Iommi, "It's not a personal thing. If he phoned us up tomorrow, which he hasn't, but if he did…"

Osbourne previously told NME about Ward's contractual dispute with SABBATH's management, "As far as I know his requests were very unreasonable. Nothing would have been better [than] if he would have been [willing to play with us]. I don't know. I don't deal with the business." Iommi added, "We've tried everything with Bill at the moment, and it's just not happening. Our legal people are dealing with his legal people. It's all nonsense. We haven't actually heard from Bill, any of this stuff. It's all been through his lawyers."

Ward has said that he's ready to travel and rejoin the band if and when a contract is offered that is to his liking.

Ward was present with the rest of the group when they announced a new album — the original lineup's first since 1978 — and world tour at a press conference last November, but went on strike shortly after that.

In the meantime, Iommi was diagnosed with cancer, forcing SABBATH to drastically curtail its touring plans and move the recording of the new CD to London, so that Iommi could remain close to his doctors.

The drum parts on the record are reportedly being played by Tommy Clufetos, who also played an intimate hometown gig in Birmingham, England with SABBATH in May and appeared with the group when it headlined the U.K.'s Download festival in June.

Barring a last-minute breakthrough with Ward, Clufetos will be behind the kit in August when the band appears at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

Nice, but doesn't sound like it will happen. So rather than whine bitch and complain about it, throw on Masters of Reality, Vol. 4 or Black Sabbath and enjoy!

At this stage of their game, they will do as they please. Really I think they are just happy to be playing. THey don't need the money, they don't need the exposure, I think they just need to play!

Good idea. I just went to youtube.com to play VOL 4 because I know the original albums are all in one of my closets and I just got off work. I do have "technical ecstasy" at my work desk. I played it twice today. Gotta love "backstreet kids" and "dirty women"

So Bill was present at the announcement of the reunion, meaning that he had at least a verbal agreement with the rest of the band. Then he waited until AFTER the announcement to go on strike because now he has the reunion by the balls and he can dictate selfish terms. Sorry but that move is worse than anything Sharon has ever done!

The air must be very thin in your world. Black Sabbath continues, as it has many times, without Bill. He has done nothing to them.

Selfish is Sauron Osbourne suing Tony Iommi to take 50% of Black Sabbath from him, after Tony kept the band running by himself all those years.

Black Sabbath ruined their legacy with that dick move, and this is the same whether Bill is wrong or the other guys. They would've sorted it out for the fans

I'll say it again...

Look at footage of Bill in 2010 at Ozzy's surprise 60th, on Jack's documentary. For a guy who had a heart attack...10-15 years ago? he is NOT in shape to be touring as a drummer at his age. I saw the documentary a couple weeks ago, took one look at Bill, and thought, "damn, now it makes more sense..."

I really wanted to hate Sharon for this and I'm a huge Bill fan but I have to admit this isn't so black and white to me anymore.

You're right, but Iommi is battling lymphoma and Ozzy hasn't been in touring condition for many years. In fact, he just had to cancel a show due to "vocal concerns" a week or two ago. It seems that the only person who is (theoretically) up for this tour is Geezer.

Also IMO lends credence to the "have him come out for a few tunes" approach they apparently wanted to try...

It seems to me if Bill wanted to be part of it, he would make it happen. I seriously wonder if he would be physically up to the challenge of a tour. Given that Tony, Ozzy and Geezer are doing all the work and writing, they ought to get a bigger cut. Tony and Geezer kick ass regardless of who is behind the kit, and Ozzy is Ozzy, so Bill's holding out won't impact me. I'll pay to see Tony and Geezer any day. They killed with Heaven and Hell these last few years and I can't wait to hear them play some of the lesser know material from the Ozzy years.

Who cares if he couldn't stand up to the rigors of touring. Their biggest mistake was not getting Bill in on the recording AND the writing for the new record. Concerts pass into history, and they have surely had far better tours than this one ever had a chance of being, but an album of new material, the 9th and last by the original lineup, would have been historic and permanent. And most importantly, it would have been a far better album with Ward's uniquely awesome drumming woven into the songs.

Even apart from their credibility issues regarding Sharon, the band has no credibility regarding the absence of Bill on the album. They basically admitted that they didn't want to provide him an opportunity for him to write drum parts on the H&H album. Vinnie corroborated that version of events by saying they wouldn't even let him add a little flare to his drumming on that album. And then they hire that robot Clufetos to do everything on this new album. They clearly have come under the impression that drums are an unimportant element of what they do and are only using a live drummer rather than a drum machine to avoid the horror and outrage that it would instill in their fans.

Fuck these guys. Sad old men who have lost their way.

Bill has been vocal about the offer. He hasn't been offered 25% of the tour proceeds, and instead they wanted to get him as a hired hand, something closer to a hired drummer's contract. So he said no.

I feel that this contract probably comes from Ozzy's camp (Sharon) as they usually like to hire young nobodies for the price of a crack pipe.

I'm over it. I got really excited when it was first announced, but at this point there are a lot of awesome bands out there to see so I'll be doing that instead. Both parties are total drama queens and should've settled this stuff in writing behind closed doors before making the reunion announcement.
