Right. He needs to do the Maiden covers again...album covers like Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, and Powerslave...and Maiden needs to make music again...music like Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, and Powerslave.

I loved the tour when they had the following Derek Ts:

Eddie eating an armadillo in the Texas desert. Still have this one

Riding a shark off the coast of California

Hanging off the Empire State Building in NY

Yeah do these too

I'd love to hear the music you've made that is SO much better than that of the greatest metal band of all-time.

So in your child like view of the world if someone does not like a band then they must make music that is better than the band they don't like. A cartoon band for cartoon kids.

So in YOUR child like view of the world, if you don't like something then it must not be good? Is that what you're saying? Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't you say that everything they ever did, with the exception of Riggs' artwork was not good? So aren't you criticizing me for saying the exact same thing to you? Please, do explain yourself.

Can't help but notice that he had no response once his hypocrisy was put on display for all to see. What an asshat!

I don't think Maiden need to get Riggs or Birch back, but they definitely need to get rid of Shirley....he has compressed and taken the air and space out of their sound and made it less dynamic.

Derek Riggs is a brilliant artist. I can't stress enough how critical his artwork was for making Maiden one of the biggest, most iconic bands on the planet.

Of course, in a perfect world, a band's success would be 100% tied to how good their music is...

...but in reality, iconic visual hooks matter a great deal when it comes to commercial success, and there's been NO more successful use of artwork to promote and market a band than Eddie.

It's too bad he had a falling out with the band...apparently Maiden and their management are quite demanding when it comes to the artwork being "perfect", and Riggs just got burned working for them full-time.

I couldn't agree more. Riggs' artwork was probably the third biggest factor in Maiden's success, behind talent and Rod Smallwood.

Maiden didn't become a worldwide phenomenon because of their artwork. Granted I was drawn to the album covers at first but I can assure you if the music sucked they would not have made it this far.

Thus reminds me of how like back in the day, you could roll into Blue Meanie Records with Phsychotic Waltz drummer Norm behind the counter telling u about some killer obscure metal he'd shelve. There was fanzines & lotsa local music. In particular I remember seeing Mayhem & the 1st Samael etc. Loved that place. Cool! SD Metal Swap Meet...will check it out! \m/

Riggs also changed the way he produced his art for them - going digital and his stuff went downhill.
His version of Fear of the Dark is fucking awful and they stopped using him full time.

That said they still use him occasionally - the Flight 666 cover was his if I recall.

Artwork and packaging has ALWAYS been a big part of a bands release. Personally, I love album art and it helps communicate the mood and ideas of the album. I've always looked forward to album artwork from bands I like, especially with Maiden. I really hated when it was decided that Riggs wasn't to do the artwork anymore. An artists work is instantly recognizable. Just like you can recognize Slashs' guitar on the radio or Jimi Hendrix, they have they're own sound. Riggs is a great, great artist and since he stopped doing Maidens artwork, the covers haven't been good at all in my opinion. The greatest work came from Derek Riggs. Personal favorite.....Somewhere in Time.

but the cover is what sells the book. Artwork did have a huge impact in buying albums back in the day. I bought Killers for the artwork but became a big fan because of the music. On the other hand I bought Flirtin With Disaster because of the cover and never bought a Molly Hatchet album again.
